Question about lasers.

Hi everybody!

OK, I'm not talking about the lasers used for surgery or to "correct" your vision, but about the ones used to ad to the experience in clubs (and in some events/parties as well) as visual effects. The thing is, I absolutely love a good laser show, performed especially for the music the dj is playing :D ;). I still remember like it was yesterday, the first time I experienced that very thing. Before that I had heard about how cool it is, but I never imagined such glory from pictures or even videos I had seen as those do not compare when you experience it live IMO...

Now, I would like to read your experiences about the lasers in the clubs of Ibiza. The best I have seen so far were at cream/amnesia and carl cox/space. I'm especially intrested in Space about this matter, because I have seen quite amazing things in the internet showing the club full of laser beams  , but I have been few times in Space besides carl cox and I have yet to witness it live. I have noticed the actual "machines" used to create the beams at Space though and always wished they would use them later in night/morning, but I guess I just have not been there at the right time or for the right parties to see it.

Don't get me wrong, I go to Ibiza for the music and vibe/scenery yes, but I would love to see the best clubs in the world IMO, using the full potential of their visual effects. So please tell me when and where should I head to experience it, thank you :) .

...lasers ...
where should I head to experience it...

for my taste the best "laserplace" is privilege -
because its a very big place with high ceilings.
but at nine parties from ten i don´t see the laser in action there :?
don´t know what day, what party, what time there is a guarantee that
the lasershow is working .

sometimes i see the laser in the space inside"main" room - but for me space is terrace or "what was the terrace" und i hate the atmosphere in the main room so i can´t judge the laser there because i always leave this crappy room as fast as possible

the lasers in the discoteca can be a bit much at times! they properly finished me off at WLS closing last year and i gave up and went back to the apartment.

Ah yes, Privilege...I can imagine it would be a proper place like you said for a good laser show. I have been at the club several times, but I have not seen lasers so far...It's a bit strange don't you think? Because I'm sure all the big clubs are capable of using lasers at their parties. It seems to me the idea they have is to use them for "special" parties or some times for globally known DJs/parties (like cream).
They also used the lasers nicely at Pure Pacha, the last time I visited. Pete Tong was playing and the atmosphere was excellent and from time to time when he played some special track it was like boom!, massive green laser beams all over the place for about 5-10 seconds and then they kept them of again. It was well planned and really kicked the party some boost.

Eden is strange to me as for lasers as well. I went to Judgement Sunday the last time I visited the Island (pretty much for old times sake as I'm not such a fan of the trance that is oftenly played there as I used to...) and I was expecting to see some lasers at some point because it's the most known and busiest night at the club, is it not? And guess what, not a single laser beam for the entire night  . I had a great time and I wasn't even wondering about it till the next day  , but I was a bit surprised then, because again, I had seen videos and photos showing the opposite. I mean if they do not use them at Judgement Sundays, then when do they? Or was I only "out of luck" that time?

I don´t rate the lasers in Ibiza very high... Amnesia´s ones are a laugh, Eden isn´t really too great either, haven´t seen Lasers at Space or Priv though.

For a "real" good laser show you should have been at the DanceValleys in Holland in 2003-2005, or at any Qlimax in Holland. Pure laser overkill.

But on Ibiza they are a nice touch, but either "not strong enough" or too much ambient other light, imho.

I agree with most of this. Laser shows are always the best at "special" electronic music events like dance valley as you said, trance energy, innercity, teisto in consert, etc. And yeah, it seems they are more like a nice touch in ibiza, at least for most of the time...The clubs should be well capable of a proper laser show though, even if it would not top the ones at those special events, obviously.

Have you ever been at BCM in Mallorca? I don't like the place nor the scenery in Magaluf, but I have to admit that they have (or had the last time I visited few years a go) some nice laser shows at BCM.

^ Cool!

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Nice pics and all, but when you go there it's like 8O and  when it should be 8O and :D 8) , if you were hoping to see some laser beams...

The pictures are new you say!? Maybe their policy has changed and they are using them more oftenly, who knows? I sure hope so...

I agree with you when it comes to visuals in a club. I know it should be all about the music but for me the creative aspect, the visuals, are what drew me to clubbing - it makes the night more of an experience. I grew up going to clubs like Limelight in NYC and it was always the lights, the lasers, the dancers, and the art installations that drew me in more than the pounding beats. At one time in clubbing history in NYC, the scene was about creativity and art along with the music - now it's all about bottle service - the ambiance isn't the same. Pacha Ibiza is probably the one club that keeps me fascinated until it closes, and that's because of its visual aspect. That champagne glass VIP arena wouldn't be the same if the girls weren't bathed in the most beautiful light as well as the water!

But back to lasers, I remember in 1990 or so the Soup Dragons were popular with the song "I'm Free", and at their live shows they had the most amazing laser show - the lights were conical and huge! They would start from the stage and pulsate out over the audience in time with the music. The whole club they were playing in would be bathed in these amazing colorful lights. The band were a lot of fun to see on their own but the lasers really made the show something special.

Did a bit with a 10 watt water cooled 3 color, more years than I would care to remember back, Even then before health and safety was invented, we had to have a safety inspection from the council, The beam was not allowed to go directly below head hight, as it would (if you forgot to turn the water cooling on) burn holes in the drapes and easily blind you, also there was only a few "authorized" people that were even allowed the pass code to turn it on, not sure if that would be an issue here ??
Another thing to remember when you see pics of them, They are usually quite long exposure photo`s, A laser only fire`s one color beam at once, eg the lower right green on the photo below, it is only one very thin beam of light, but it is moved around / shuttered on and off very quickly, the one in the middle is a three color and the one on the left could either be a smaller green or done with mirrors, so the photo capture`s a lot more of the light show than your eye`s do,
Have a good one
Tim
ps if you ever get chance, stand in the middle of a "tunnel" ( in reality a big "O" projected behind you) feels like you are falling into it big time

Thought the lazers in Amnesia terrace for Cream closing were pretty special. One lazer projected onto loads of mirrors for a 'dappled' effect over the whole room, was pretty cool!

Things have gotten better in ibiza if you like lasers included in your clubbing experience like I do. For the most part this is thanks to Amnesia upgrading their light effect system to whole new level last year. And not only that, they actually used them very nicely on several nights I visited the place in last september. In general I feel Amnesia has managed to get better and and better for a couple of years now and that new laser system really add to the whole thing, especially in the terrace obviously.

Considering Amnesia's resent success it will be intresting to see if the other clubs start to use more lasers and even upgrade their systems as well. I understand heavy laser effects do not necessarily belong to all nights or clubs, but still it would be cool to see privilege for example taking a similar approach even if it would be aimed more to special nights like tiesto. I would imagine Space keeping it's style though. They seem to "save" their laser shows for some special cases through the season. Nothing wrong with that as atleast they have fine lasers and use them masterfully when the time comes. The ones I saw at carl cox's closing party few years ago were absolutely insane.

Most of them have some pretty serious lasers, It`s down to they guy driving them, Sadly the lighting tech job is not well paid or a nice job, They think you should work for them for nothing, cause it will look good on your CV, 6 days a week 11,30 > 6.30am ISH (who does the 7th :?,,, you do mostly) In an extremely loud environment and be on form every night,
So popping in to "do a bit of programming" in the afternoon is not done :D
