The PRS (Performing Rights Society) are visiting discos in my hometown to check on DJ's to catch those that use downloaded music off the 'net, CDR copies, etc. They enter a disco discretely and spend 30-40 minutes listing all the tunes being played. Then they announce themselves to the management and ask to speak to the DJ. They then present the list to the DJ saying "you have just played these, prove they are legal" type of thingy.
They visited one of my DJ pals first and he asked them for Identification. They had paperwork, but, no ID. He then said "Here's my ID....." and presented them with his Inland Revenue photo ID card. PMSL Wish I'd been there to see their faces.
Anyway he was totally legal so no problem. That was 4 weeks ago, since then most of the DJ's have cleaned out any CDR's and stopped playing unreleased music. There is still 2 that I know are playing unreleased material and ignoring what's happening.
The PRS visited another disco last Saturday, again no problem. So I reckon it's just as matter of time before they visit me, 'course I'm totally legal...................now!
In fact I'm currently using genuine bought original CD's.
What happened to the laptop? It errr........ well errr....... ho hum........it's errr got a virus. To be honest I've got shedloads on it that were genuinely recorded from my vinyl collection, but, there's loads that were downloaded that I already have on vinyl (it's quicker than recording them). I need to go through 6,000 tunes to make sure I do have them legit. It's gonna take some time.
I've dumped the database to another hard drive and wiped the laptop clean. I've put all the CD's I use on there and will gradually copy only the legit tunes back on to it eventually. The tricky thing is you're supposed to have the original CD's, Vinyl at the venue where you are performing. But that defeats the object of using a laptop especially with vinyl. It would be impossible to take all my vinyl to my venue (would need a Transit van) plus there is no room at my venue to store a large collection of vinyl. Then there is the security risk, I've already had a Hed Kandi triple CD nicked 2 weeks ago (Chrimbo pressy from one of my sons). Bar..stewards!![Evil  ](/images/icon_evil.gif)
Should have the laptop back in operation next week or the week after and can be 100% sure that it is legal.
I've even started getting back into buying 12" vinyl singles again, only the good stuff though, Soulful Funky House for other venues where there is tables........and my own personal gratification of 'course.
