project patio

while you hipsters have been wittering on here all afternoon i've been out with an 8 litre tin of paint working on project patio. an ongoing labour of love to transform a former jungle into an area of shady retreat, peace and quiet.

what was once a long narrow strip of 'garden' has now been divided up, after much back breaking hard work, into sections with a different style and ambience in each.

we've had a series of small walls built to section off the garden areas in the centre of the plot and at the back overlooking the fields we've had crazy paving laid down with halogen spots embedded in the floor for a dramatic lighting effect. we have a couple of teak adirondack chairs to relax in as the sun goes down in the evening

then we've had a large wall built across the garden, which has low level lights for a subdued illumination as we'll be positioning a dining table by it. I've yet to put membrane onto the soil with gravel over it for a dry mud free surface! we also have a triangular sail to stretch over the area to give it more shade and a sense of style. the final touch will be a funky steel gate we're having made by a guy called douglas la mota who has a workshop close by and makes the most beautiful furniture from metal.

here's the progress so far

today i painted all the new walls white and they'll soon have pots with geraniums (typically spanish) fixed to them and tall grasses in front to soften them. Plus a line of pots at the side of the path to the left.

just wait till i reveal the plans for the other side of the wall. eat your heart out dermot!

I think you are missing a very shady little spot for the furry kids to sleep under when it gets too hot Stephen - 8)

here's a before shot. i'd already cut the creepers back as when we arrived they were actually growing under the apartment door to the left!

i live in the oldest street in san jose village! one minute and 22 seconds to raco verd on foot! (but a little bit longer coming back)

and now, especially for stuie, here it is from the other direction.

wow! thanks stephen

i trust you are suitably proud of your efforts! or has the mrs. done it all and you just got busy with the camera? ;)

and stage two has now almost been completed after some more back breaking labour. absolutely everything i used apart from the gravel has been recycled from other parts of the garden. peppermint might be surprised to learn that only one tree had to be removed in the whole process. we found two others and numerous cacti under the creepers which are now thriving and healthy......
here's a photo taken this morning

i think it gives a relaxing feeling, and being sunken, it has lots of cool shade.
