Professional ear-plugs

Allo, I'm looking to buy some professional quality earplugs as I find the boots jobbie foam ones can't cope with the bass in most clubs (they do quite well on the higher frequencies), and I also can't DJ in them as they cut out some frequencies a lot more than others.

I've been in the situation where my ears are still ringing after a session with the foam ones in - are systems getting louder or am I getting too old?? ;)

Anyways - ACS seem to be the mian people making these things, but a pair is £164.. I'll pay that if I have to, but maybe there's a slightly cheaper product I could buy which does a similar job..? Also, what's the process for getting fitted?

Thanks for any help / advice!

Just told our storeman to post you out this Marky:

Job done, no?

I suggest finding an audiologist that knows something about making ear plugs. The audiologist can take a mold of your ear and then send the mold off to have a custom plug made with a custom filter of your choice (based on frequency). They usually run about $150 over here. Here is a site with some information: http://www.soundadvice-earplugs.com

If you talk to the right audiologist they might know where to send the mold off to. The website above uses someone in Florida.

I need to get me a pair before my trip. Friends that have them swear by these. They say the music is crystal clear and you can have a normal conversation with someone in a club environment.

She does the ACS ER15 moulded plugs which are perfect for Djing. They take up to a month to come through after the initial mould has been taken.

Yep the ACS ER15s are the £164 ones I mentioned - will get touch with the good doctor ;)
Thanks guys :D

I got my self some ER-15 a while back. You go to the doctor and they take moulds of your ears send them off some where and about 2 weeks later they arrive through the post.

I use them all the time and cant recomend them enough for clubbing or Djing

Glad to see that some people are taking hearing protection very seriously. I spent a couple years in artillery and I lost about 20% of my hearing and worse yet, I have non-stop blarring loud ringing in my ears every second of every day. I don't mind the hearing loss so much as all I have to do is say "what? what? what?", but the non stop ringing drives me crazy sometimes.

Always protect your hearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Rick:

I do not think that in your days Surefire was making ear protectors (www.earprocom.com). One of my instructors (who is also on the Surefire team of instructors) uses them. Kick a** stuff. I'd love to get the EP420 if it were not that pricey :( . I'll have to find out what discount I might be able to get through my instructor.

Booked in for Friday :D

Thanks dude :)

I had my fitting yesterday for some custom plugs. It was very hrmm... weird. They fill your eal canals w/ this plaster to form a mold. The audiologist was talking to the other guy there and I couldn't here a word...I tried to read lips but I am totally worthless at that. It was a very disturbing feeling of being deaf. I got the ER-15s too. They should be in within 2.5 weeks...just in time for Ibiza. ;) :)

I found the 15s don't quite cut the mustard for those big club systems, upgrading today to the 25s..

i've got a set, don't dj with them in, can't hear exactly whats going on, but i just wear them the rest of the time when i'm in the club or whenever i'm out clubbing. Makes so much difference.

Most places will let you upgrade the filters for free in the first week mate - ask to trial run the 15s, then upgrade if you need to.

Mark or Anyone Else Interested:

If you are still looking for hearing protection, I would highly recommend the Surefire (EarPro) EP3 Sonic Defender. I used them for the first time last month, and I have been using them ever since. Very comfortable, very unnoticeable, and very reasonably priced. Check them out at

i have a pair of Etymotic ER-20's. they are awesome earplugs and the music sounds great in them. they only cost USD $12!!!! they are perfect for those dancers who want to protect their hearing. the best part about these earplugs is that they aren't too expensive, so it's no big deal if you lose them

i would NOT recommend these for DJ use. they are too big to wear with headphones.

http://store.yahoo.com/rav/er20.html

not sure if you can get these across the pond. i'm sure if you google, you'll find them somewhere.

ciao,
snardy

You can get these at www.widget.co.uk
