Ok i've been told this before last year when i was in ibiza from a mate but i wasnt in the best state to take it in and remember it

What do the Police do?
What do the Guardia Civil do?

What is the difference?

How do you tell them apart?

What are their respective areas of responsibility/juristiction?

Who should you go report it to if you are robbed/burgled/whatever?

Sorry for all the questions...thought i had better learn a bit more for my eight and ninth trips to the island this summer after some problems last year!

Cheers,

N8.

Hi think,

- administrative offences (wrong parking etc.) are the part of the police
- something like an affray between british hooligans is the part for the Guardia Civil.
I learnt it in this way:
- Green uniform = unfriendly and very aggressiv
- blue uniform = firendly people

The Guardia Civil's job is more related to traffic outside cities, terrorism, ...

I don't know exactly all the differences. There are some things both the police and the Guardia Civil do.

Eivissa fan is true. In general the Guardia Civil (green) has worse reputation than the Police (blue).

Still not sure about this, perhaps Stephen or James can add something?

Information about the Police in Spain

There are three separate police organisations in Spain which can be confusing at first.

The Guardia Civil wear green uniforms and are less reactionary today than they were during Franco's control. They are responsible for national security, customs and for crowd control at large events. Their trafico department patrol the main highways with cars and motorbikes and organise radar speeding checks.

The National Police normally wear a black uniform and white shirts. Others will wear a blue military style uniform and can be heavily armed as their duties include guarding public buildings, the Royal Family and Government figures. They deal with most crime investigation which is important to know if you are unfortunate enough to be the victim of some crime, such as a bag snatching. If this is the case, you should make a statement (denuncia) at a police station. They will issue you a copy for your insurance company (and banks if your credit card is taken and misused) .

The Municipal Police are essentially local police and wear blue and white uniforms. They are responsible to the mayor and town hall in each municipality, and devote much time to local traffic control and parking violations. As ambasadors for their town they are most likely to help tourists.

All three branches of the police are armed and should be treated with due respect

and soon the balearic police too..........

Balearic Police Force 4 Years Away.
The creation of the Balearic Islands own police force is around 4 years away from becoming a reality. This delay is due to the complicated bureaucratic procedure, which the setting up of this new force needs. When it finally starts to operate, the new police will work all over the Baleares alongside & in addition to the existing municipal local police & the Guardia civil or National Police forces.

This is true, all what you said it is wrigth, but there is a few of things left to be said, that explains some questions. In villages the one that is in charge of most crime investigation is the guardia civil. Policia nacional is just in cities ( depends of the number of inhabitants) not in villages.
This is why for example in a affray between british hooligans if it is produced in a village, guardia civil would be in charge but if the same situation is taken in a major city the ones in charge are the policia nacional. Policia nacional just in cities , guardia civil in rural places and villages. Another way of saying it, under a X number of inhabitants guardia civil, over that number policia nacional.

Guardia civil is also in charge of , customs, ports, sea, roads
Policia nacional is also in charge of airports. So in the airport you can find both.
Sometimes you can see in a city a policia nacional station and a guardia civil station, this is because policia nacional as it is a large city there are competent but guardia civil has a station there, a base of operations, because as i have said there are in charge of airports, custums, ports.

This is the difference.

in related news..........

Undercover Police Car.
A new, specially equipped, undercover traffic police patrol car was put into use for the first time last week in Ibiza. Manned by uniformed officers, the car was seen driving around the island stopping drivers who the officers saw committing moving traffic offences or who were driving dangerously.
It was also reported later in the week that the authorities are installing signs around the island informing drivers that they are entering sections of road where speed traps are carried out. The sign also tells the driver the correct speed they should be travelling at & it is hoped that this will make drivers more wary of exceeding the correct speed limit & encourage them to drive more safely.

More National Police.
Despite counter claims from some sources that there was a lack of National & Guardia Civil police on the island, Jose Manuel Bar, political head of these state police forces on the island, said that there would be 205 National police on the island this summer, which was an increase of 52 on last year. The force to be full strength should number 222 but would reach 202 by summer to patrol the urban area of Ibiza Town, which is much better than the 153 agents on the island in previous years.
The rest of the island is covered by the Guardia Civil & it appears that the situation is not so good. There are supposedly 268 officers patrolling the island with 55 other positions left unfilled. Of these 55 it appears that only 22 will be filled by summer. Opposition politicians said that this was not good enough given the extra work load the Guardia Civil had to undertake in summer.
