just for info really, arrived home to the UK today and the situation as we left was that both the above beaches were closed due to a boating accident on thurs. A boat sunk and spilt all its fuel into the sea, both beaches heavily contaminated, waves and sand blac with oil......clean up team on site but looks like its gonna take a while!!!

According to the news reports I'd read, they closed the beaches at Playa den Bossa, Figueretes and Talamanca. That would include Bora Bora, though I suppose that wouldn't stop you from hanging out at the bar!

Anyone have an update on the clean-up progress?

In any case, it's a good excuse to go out and visit some other beaches ;)
If you want music, there's Las Salinas. The beaches up in the far northeast are nice and sandy, as are places like Cala Bassa just down from San An Bay. More advice here: http://www.ibiza-spotlight.com/beaches_i.htm

pdb beach is pretty bad anyway.... much nicer beaches elsewhere!

last year i spent more than 4 weeks in pdb,
went swimming every day,
but only on 2 days at pdb-beach.

there are loads of beautiful (other) beaches .

I hear this a lot and after waffling on the issue over the years, I decided this year that I disagree... at least, as far as June as concerned.

This year, and again I stress this was 2nd half of June, I did not find the beach overcrowded. I found the water to be clean and the sand as well. The beach is long, it's sandy, no rocks and pebbles. There are plenty of beach chairs available and very easy to grab a beer or snack when the desire hits (or get served on the beach). And you've got places like Tahiti/Bora Bora with some nice tunes playing. It's too commercial? So what! I didn't come to Ibiza to get away from civilization. And if you're staying in PdB, it's damn convenient!

Now, we've made a point of visiting many other beaches all around the island, especially on our past 3 visits. I've got several of them I truly love. Some are good for a particular bar or restaurant, others have sandy beaches and shallower, calmer water, and some are nice quiet places to sit with a beer under an umbrella and stare out at the water and think.

But I don't think there's anything wrong with PdB!

No.. its not wrong...but I guess I look at it this way.. I'm only in Ibiza about 10 days... and in those 10 days I'd rather be elsewhere than pdb.. For eg.. the the beaches in the north like xuclar, Cala d'en serra, cala Mastella, and many many others.... Sure, I like to go to bora bora and grab a drink... but if I'm only on a beachy island for 10 days.. I think there are way way way nicer beaches with nicer beach and water than pdb beach. Waaaaay nicer.;)

Not saying there aren't nicer beaches (especially if the sand and water are your priorities). I fell in love with Cala Boix on this trip and also quite liked Cala Bassa.

Just saying that PdB isn't at all bad!

Read today that they put a big barrier around Salinas to stop the oil spreading to there as it is a protected area, but that has now been breached too.

I agree there are nice beaches all over the isle but PDB combines the things I want with being near to where I stay. If you go go in august there are que's and crowds everywhere.

how easy is it to get to and from Las Salinas ,Cala Boix etc.. & how much do you reckon a taxi ride would cost?

Cala Boix is far... on the northeast edge of the island and down a long winding road. I wouldn't go there by taxi from Ibiza or San An as you'll spend enough for a dinner for 2.

Las Salinas is easy to get to from Playa den Bossa. You'd probably spend a tenner on taxi but I believe there's a bus going there from PdB so you can go for cheap.

Edit:
Here's proof of how badly I'm procrastinating today:

The #11 bus (Eivissa-Sant Jordi-Salinas) runs hourly on the half hour from Ibiza Town to Salinas and on the hour from Salinas ;)
