Plastic cups in trees

Hiya,
Just a random question has come to mind...when driving through the countryside in Ibiza I've noticed quantities of plastic cups attached in the trees.

Is this something to do with insects or scaring things off?

for the free trance parties...in can punta,portinatx,moon beach...it was the way to signal the parties in the 90's,you just had to follow it....

nowadays when people are having a party they tie a load of balloons to the gatepost.
