Places to live - Brighton

Ok, so I'm seriously considering a move to Brighton.

For you guys who live out there, where is a good place to live? I'd like to be within commuting distance of Falmer (as I will be going to uni there to do my masters).

Thoughts?

I would PM Barbie - she's been there a year now I think so worth picking her brains AND her hubby is in the know 8)

Hi Mate,

I have lived in Brighton for the past 10 years. Best areas to live in Brighton in my opinion ...

Hanover area - Very hilly, terraced houses, 20 min walk to town, lots of decent pubs and youngish families

North Laine - Trendy bohemian cafe/pub/boutique area. Probably one of the most expensive areas in central Brighton. Very lively. Young fashinable crowd.

Kemp Town - Has a kind of community, village feel, again lots of pubs, near to seafront, where the main gay area is centred around.

Lewes Road - Long road that goes from the seafront up to Falmer, so you will probably need to go this way if commuting to Falmer. Slightly run down. Tends to be a cheaper area, lots of student properties centred around here.

All of the above areas are on or near to a main bus route to Falmer (25). Parking will always be a problem in central Brighton, so Id advise use public transport. Most places (apart from Falmer! are walkable).

Preston Park area and some areas in Hove also nice, more family centred and more of a problem to get to Falmer from though ...

Hope this helps!

We've been living in Brighton for 15 years now. I cannot think of anywhere better ... Certainly in the uk...Avoid the areas nearest to Falmer though. Think train from town:D

Hello

First of all Brighton is ACE - we'd spent many many weekends away here before we moved down and it's even better when you live here, for me it's got all the best bits I liked in London but condensed in a little toy city

Where to live is really subjective - we live in Seven Dials which I absolutely love as it's got a real community feel, local restaurants, local shops etc...yet in 10 minutes walk I can be at the shops in Brighton centre. But if you're coming down to be a student you'll probably find it waaay to sedate and steady

I find somewhere like Hanover waaay to studenty, but that's because I'm an old married woman  As an area it is really popular for students, and it's easy to get everywhere. I assume you're going to be renting in the first instance and there is a big rental market there.

Tbh it really depends what you want from where you live, but wherever you base yourself, you're never far from anywhere. In nearly a year of living here, I've not been on any public transport (just walk or bike everywhere) and only been in a taxi twice (and that was when I needed assistance getting home )

Somewhere studenty, but not too studenty. I've done being a student before (I'm going back as a Post-Grad), so the whole going out getting drunk every night thing hasn't got the same appeal it used to. Once a week though...

I'd like to be within walking distance of town, or close to a station if need be. I have no issue with walking or with public transport, won't have my car as I'm too worried about upkeep and insurance. Going to be living on a tight enough budget as it is.
