Photos + review of the Music Box @ Manumission (Monday August 1): feat. Annie, Twisted Hip, Adam Freeland, Eddy Temple-Morris
the Music Box - August 1, 2005
Fast forward three days and I was back in the Box for Manumission’s rather more established Monday nighter. Drum’n’bass was erupting from the speakers - cue double take. It’s not a common sound for Manumission or Ibiza in general but Xfm’s Eddy Temple Morris was clearly enjoying himself and the room full of newly-recruited junglists.
Annie Berge-Strand @ the Music Box - August 1, 2005
Somehow Eddy managed to segue it back into rock and keep everybody with him. Annie (above) came on at 4am and brought a touch of Top of the Pops to the proceedings with their opening number, the Richard X-penned and produced ‘Chewing Gum’.

It’s yet another musical hair-pin bend on a night like a particularly twisted Scalectrix race track. The blonde Norwegian popstrel is engaging enough but could learn a trick or two about stage craft from Dannii Minogue who really got her front row’s attention by snogging an incredulous chav at Eden a few years back.
Ms Berge-Strand then took to the synth pads for their widely played ‘The Greatest Hit’ as the audience grooved way happily. We are happy to report that no-one looked ready to melt despite the large quantity of people in the club.

Hooray for adequate air-conditioning, and hurrah also for the following dj Adam Freeland who busted out breaks, thrashing guitars and soaring melodies till most everybody bugged out to the main room to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Claire Manumission.

But the night was by no means over. Twisted Hip are an Ibiza-based band consisting of lead singer (and ‘Mish resident dj) Jus Rock, his partner on guitar and vocals the nattily-attired Dan Williams, a bass player, a drummer and two back up singers. Their 6am performance was their third in successive years.
Jus Rock @ the Music Box - August 1, 2005
Jus Rock’s got a good set of pipes and combined with Williams’ nimble fret work they thrust their way through a short set that elicited an enthusiastic crowd reaction, befitting to their status as home town heroes.

More champagne corks flew as Claire and cohorts toasted the dawn, visible through the steamed up windows. Colin ‘No I’m not the guy from Bloc Party’ Peters took it to the close.
