one for the drivers: radar speed control

hi guys,

there are new fix installed radars on the island, to my knowledge two of them.

here is the list of all radars - I hope I haven't forgotten any:

- highway ibiza - san antonio: about 1km after the san rafael tunnel on the descent, a good bit before getting to the roundabout
- highway san antonio- ibiza: about 500m before the san rafael tunnel, just after the ascent has finished
- road from santa eulalia to ibiza: short after passing the go kart track and before entering ca na negreta on the descent
- road from san antonio to san josé: right after passing chimichurri restaurant on your right, basically just below the village of san augustin.
- NEW: road from santa eulalia to san carlos on the long straight bit
- NEW: road from san josé to san jordi/ibiza: just before you get to the cova santa turnoff, coming down from san josé

generally I can only recommend everyone not to speed. you are all on holiday and you have plenty of time to get from one place to another. the roads aren't the best, people's driving is pretty horrendous sometimes and there is a lot of traffic.

as an old motto says 'esto es ibiza, no tengas prisa' - this is ibiza, don't hurry.

Last week on the road from Salinas, just before the motorway roundabout, police were randomly(?) pulling over vehicles. Anyone see that and is that regular, or were they specifically looking for something?

ps. apart from the fix radars mentioned above, they also use mobile radars... 71 drivers were fined in santa eulalia two weeks ago:

very regular lately, but I think in the main season it diminishes notably. every year there is a lot of police controls between march and may I find, so definitely nothing new.

Hmm, wonder why that is? Is that when locals get their car taxed and MOT'd and these controls are an "encouragement"?! Frankly I'm surprised at the lower number in summer, thinking those returning from the beach (daytime) and nights out would be "encouraged" not to drink by this visible presence?

okay there are two more new fix installed radars now:

- road from jesus to cala llonga, just as you get out of jesus and the road starts to climb. it is a 40km/h zone in which most people used to drive too fast...especially the ones coming down the hill and into jesus. the radar works both ways I believe.
- road from ses paisses to san an, bay side. close to one of those small roundabouts.

again guys - way more than half of all drivers here are on holiday so absolutely no need to rush. this is ibiza...TAKE IT EASY

Never mind tourists speeding - it’s the taxi drivers that are terrifying. Think the fastest I got to between Bossa and San An was 140km/h last year Not kidding!

I just “poodle” along well under the limit getting in the way of them all.. ;)

I got busted by the one near the San Rafael tunnel a few years back. A nice letter landed a few months later at my UK address. My Spanish isn't great, but I was bang to rights. Not that expensive and paying even on the Spanish website was easy.

Must admit, I have a big thing against the war on speed, or at least its mis-placed intentions. However I suppose the Ibiza ones are at least well signed.

there are LOTS of new radars now

- a new one on the motorway leaving the airport towards ibiza town
- between ibiza town and santa eulalia

and a very important one:
- between can bellotera and cas costas, there is a 'radar de tramo', which means it will measure the time you spend passing those two sections - if you are too fast on the entire stretch, ouch! it's 60kph there and it's a completely straight stretch where usually literally everyone drove faster than 60.

there are some other ones too, but just to remind you: ESTO ES IBIZA, NO TENGAS PRISA!!

i saw them installing the motorway one yesterday.

i’ve seen loads of cameras i’ve never noticed before in the past few days, i may have even been done on one yesterday on the Salinas road just after DC10 🙁. The speed limits are constantly changing, it’s distracting me from driving 😂.

The average speeds SPECS cameras in the UK are brutal btw.

I find the psychology of Spanish roads really fascinating. Yes, in the UK you get a lot of bad drivers and lawless white vans, but there isn’t this collective need to turn motorways into an afternoon at Monte Carlo. I find that on the autopista there is nearly always someone breathing down your spine, but the worst thing for me is that absolutely nobody ever - EVER! - gives way. Like it’s an affront to someone’s pride to even go there. At roundabouts too, people often don’t indicate either which drives me nuts. Feel the middle-aged moan… 😂
