North Korea

Late for work this morning from the shock of hearing this news bulletin.

Had to start a thread but have work to do so I'll leave you guys too it.

I haven't got the volcabulary to express how disgusted I am with the people behind this. Urgh.

It's a terrible useless thing to do, but when you have a country with a military government, I suppose they're determined to have nuclear weapons. I don't agree with the resolution they want the UN to pass with economic sanctions though... the only people that will affect are the citizens of N Korea who need the money and the items that will be lost as a result.

Bush will soon be over there blowing the place to smithereens so dont worry

Seriously though, it's a very scary thing to happen, its more or less inviting war isnt it?!

Yes, and considering the fact that a nuclear attack could wipe out half the world - I think it's curtains when George Bush goes out there (which is inevitable)...so it's time to take responsibility and engage ourselves somehow.
Well, it is Monday morning so I'll finish my coffee first.

Ahem... so, ya... really scary stuff. The good news is, analysts don't think they have the technology to rocket-mount their bombs yet. I suppose that's just a matter of time though.

But instead of having a nation of angry people going '' and carrying on with their normal lives, I think it's time to get involved.

Apathy will achieve nothing.

(that's not aimed at you by the way Morbs! x I'm just getting all fired up at my desk from the caffeine rush!)

If we do nothing what message are we giving to Iran. In the near future we will be hearing news about Iran testing nuclear weapons!

Shall we go on a demonstration like the one we were going to do after Danny Rampling last year

I can't remember that one but I imagine it was very passionate. Did it involve throwing? (Obviously - sorry stupid question)

True... but what do you do with North Korea?

Economic sanctions? Questionable effect and also punishment on a civilian population that's already periodically battling with mass starvation.

Military attack? Well, the last military campaign allegedly tied to WMD hasn't gone so well (even if you set aside the fact it was a lie). Plus, who's to say they won't detonate one of those bombs!? Or worse, attack S Korea or Japan.

International isolation? N Korea is already pretty much isolated!

The Chinese and Russians haven't been a lot of help, but even if they got with the program there's no guarantee Pyongyang would change course.

Big demonstrations in Europe or the US would have little effect on what goes on out in Korea.

You'd made plans to go on an anti-war demonstration on the Sunday which was probably quite ambitious considering you didn't leave Turnmills til midday  ;) We realised it wasn't going to happen so you made us some costumes out of carrier bags and we marched round Jamie's flat chanting anti-war messages  It all makes a difference

Precisely! Our intentions were pure and I feel we created a lot of change that weekend.

It continues to amaze me how a bit of creativity and a few carrier bags can really help to raise consciousness on a global scale.

 It's people like us who get off their arses and do something positive to make a difference
