AN unusual competitor has appeared on Dolce & Gabbana's radar in the shape
of South African seaside jewellery store Dolce and Banana -
who now face prosecution.
The luxury label has accused store-owner Mijou Beller - who has been in business for 12 years,
crafting costume jewellery from driftwood and shells - of "diluting" its brand name and ignoring
two previous warnings.
Beller insists that the tongue-in-cheek name meant no harm.
"Dear Stefano, please let us be," Beller pleaded via Twitter."And visit us in Cape Town.
I have always admired your famous sense of humour so present in your brand
and in your designs.
And although I appreciate that Dolce & Gabbana is a very successful commercial enterprise,
I fail to understand why Dolce and Banana is a threat."
Beller is not equipped to challenge the 100,000 rand (£8,145) lawsuit,
so has instead responded by renaming her store "Banana" - WWD reports.
The rebranding process has set her back only 10 per cent of the original claim she faced.
