Nie/ehic

thanks a million for that web page been looking foe ages for a print out of that. i have nie from last year so will it still be valid or do i have to go wait at the police station again ?

your nie number lasts just as long as you do! with it and a legal contract you are entitled to free healthcare here in ibiza - which i might add appears to be much better than in britain.

oh dear oh dear.
lets start with the nie. it's a person's lifetime reference number for tax and social security. without it you can't work, buy and sell a house or car, and get unemployment benefit.
every ec citizen can apply for this using the form above. non ec citizens ( apart from a few countries) need a work permit and visa before they can get an nie.
with an nie and a legal work contract you can get free healthcare from the spanish national health system. you apply for a health card and then with this you are assigned a local doctor and can go to the hospital for emergency treatment.
private medical insurance is needed only if you require really fast treatment - i've never fealt the need for it as average waiting lists in ibiza are only 32 days for operations. we are a small island so a lot of specialist treatment is carried out in mallorca barcelona or valencia.
if you are a canadian citizen it's unlikely that you'll have the correct papers so you will need holiday insurance for your medical needs.

how's that?

actually i was told by on www.balearic-jobs.com that spain doesn't have national healthcare ,NIE gets u very basic medical care ,that u need private medicare insurance for anything serious.

The spanish national healthcare is correct, actually if you have a very serious illnes like cancer most private doctors will recomend you to go to the public ones cos they have all the resources needed.
If you were going somewhere like Barcelona, where the waiting lists can be up to three - five months, then a private medical insurance may be considered. I have a private medical insurance since I was born but my boyfriend never had any and never felt like having any ;)

Just wanted to add that the medical treatment here is really fast, after being diagnosed with cancer, i was operated whitin a week, did chemo, all this with the national healthcare.
just trying to say that spanish healthcare is really good.

Update on NIE situation from Luke (on DSI), who is now over there...

"You cannot get a working contract in Ibiza without an NIE number so the employers are writing out "Pre Contracts" which you then take to the police to get the number.

Hope this helps."

*UK GOvt in doing something well shocker!*

Oh, and from memory, though this may be innaccurate, I'm sure I've read somewhere that without this card, you may not be covered by your travel medical insurance.
