was wondering if anyone has any travelling experience of these two places?

i'm looking to get advice on maybe doing some short term volunteer work or (which would be better) some paid work for maybe a month or so in new york. maybe the same for tokyo but i think the chances are a bit slimmer.

not really into the tefl teaching english thing.

i'm a thinkin this would be a guid way to get a better experience of the said destinations, get away from the city and meet some local folks.

also, any destinations to check oot, be it clubs, landmarks restaurants etc

mucho thanks :)

new york - amazing, feels like you're in the centre of the universe, same feelings about there as i get about ibiza, most incredible cosmos of peoples imaginable. all the good bits about america and none (ok there are some, but less than anywhere else) of the bad bits. can't put it into words, but steam rising up through the gotham vents, ice rink at the rockefeller centre, knicks/mets losing again at the gardens and formerly shea stadium, every languaged under the sun, every food type under the sun. a capuccino (£3 here) costs 50p.............and on top of all that, check out our strong pound!!

ask utaguara, he worked in japan i think!;)

bit vague there utagaura but i suppose you covered the most impotant bit! need to learn how to say 'how much for how long' in japanese

how did you source work?

cheers grego - as much info about anything is great. :)

ha ha! Just kidding the birds aren't that good.. I wouldn't know anyway! ;)

you said you want to get away from the city? Then I wouldn't go to Tokyo.

I lived in an inbred fishing village, so i got to meet the locals. when I went I did the teaching English thing, but was in a public school rather than a language school, so I reeeeaaaaallly got to know the loclas. i lived in a village with no place to buy food, so i was really out of the way.

Tokyo is good fun though.. I'd live there if i ahd a chance.

The yen has gone down and the Canadian $ has gone up, so now a lot of the salaries jsut aren't as good as they used to be.

Are you looking for work? volunteer? what kind of work would you be interested in doing?

the plan would be to go to tokyo then try to head out into the sticks. doing a few weeks of voluntary work would be cool but not sure how available that is without speakin da lingo :?:

any type of work would be ok really. i canny really find an info on anything other than teaching.

excellent, cheers 8)

nice one.

had a look at some of those sites before and there are a few things that hold me back.

i dont want to volunteer for some mad bible bashing outfit

i dont really want to pay £100 to volunteer

i only want to stay for a a few weeks.

suppose i need to come to terms with one of the above to get a placement.

cheers again for your help. 8)

Yeah, I think a lot of volunteer placements, regardless of whether they are in Japan are not make you pay to volunteer. I think its the only way they can fund their projects.

Or, just save up some money , get a rail pass, take a language class or go traveling!

its not really the money, its more the fact that volunteering aint meant to cost anything, and i dont know how good that particular company are etc without signing up and paying a fee. i only want to do a max on 1.5 months work in total between nyc & tokyo.

if anyone knows of any volunteer places they would recommend, i'd be all over it like a tramp eating sick.

tar :)

i'm not particularly interested in any causes to be honest, purely cos i haven't looked into any.

the aim for me thru volunteering is to help some less fortunate causes, and get to know some locals and get a real feel for the place instead of tourist stuff.

something like helping to build a bridge or hunting dangerous, village threatening ligers or wolverines.
