Help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope!!!

I am planning to go to New York for my 30th birthday (aaaarggghh!) However, I have never been before and it looks like it's gonna be expensive. I should be okay for half decent flight etc. But am really looking for some advice with regards to it all. Hotels, places of interest, is it wise to do cheap flight. All that crap really.

All help will be greatfully received and rewarded with a nice word of wisdom!

1st word of wisdom, "Always bet on black!" (Wes Snipes, Passenger 57)

jeembo,

I was there last Easter, we got very cheap flights (350€, that's nothing flying from BCN) and a good deal re hotel (Metropolitan, near Rockefeller Cter, 1200€/8 nights).
We booked both early november and our trip was in March, it's the only wat to find good deals.
Search around Expedia.com, hotels.com and all that sites. For us was great cos most of them are in Dolars and the exchange to Euros was really good at that time.

Places of interest: everywhere. You just need a good pair of shoes and walk walk and walk ;)

Depends on how long you're staying, but a nice hotel that's kind of expensive but worth it is the hotel QT. http://www.hotelqt.com/

It has a pool near a bar and the rooms are quite nice. DVD player and flat screen, platform bed, very nice shower.

Prob looking to stay for about a week. Going to do the usual sight seeing stuff and not too fussed about creature comforts. Location is more my concern.

Any advice on using public transport. i.e. When best not to use. Completely fresh to New York and don't really know how safe it is. My only knowledge of it is through films.

jeembo, NY is really safe, and public transports are great and easy. New Yorkers are very kind with tourists and everyone is up to help a confused tourist. Anyhow, in my opinion the best way to experience NY is walking (lots) :D

Christopeher "Walking" in New York sounds great to me Sylvia. Thank you.

How is life in Barcelona at the moment? Is it still sunny?

How I miss waking up on Saturday and only having a 2 minute walk to Platja de Castdefells, or a 5 minute train to Sitges.

You lucky, living in Barcelona, person!!!!

Gracias :P

Life here is sunny and nice as always, warm during the day and quite cold early morning or night. :D
I don't think I'll get back to the beach till next spring, I got a flu in Formentera and I only fancy hidding myself under the duvet :(

Formentera flu doesn't sound the best! Sure you'll shake it off eventually. Thanks for the New york info. Away to start looking and booking as we speak!!

Some very stylistic camera work there!!

Yeah starting to get really enthusiastic about going now! Have always been a bit nervous about the flight time. Get really anxious when flying and bored!!!! :?

I hate flying, I controll myself enough to not have panic attacks but it's a hard mental work 8O
We had a direct flight on the way back, but it was much worst than the other one. I slept 0 minutes and it was freezing in the plane (my boyfriend spent the next week in bed :? ), even sleeping tablets did nothing. On the other hand, flying there was quite pleasant. We had a funny journey: barcelona - Casablanca - New York, the catering was arab styleeeee (after lunch the whole plane smelt curry  ) and I think the excitation made it more or less easy to put up with.

Silvia, your Pep is a great photograf too, his pictures are really good and I liked a lot Silvias tribute :D
