The Hudson's got a good location and the public areas are great. The rooms look nice but are small, but then that's NYC. The club is hilarious.
The New Yorker was ****e - avoid like the plague. Tiny rooms, unhelpful staff, though great location.
Trying to remember the name of really good value central one I used once....it'll come to me......

I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Chelsea on W 28th , it was ok , staff were helpful and room clean etc. Well located I thought.

I stayed here most recently http://www.parkcentralny.com/ at a very reasonable price considering it was half way between central park and times square. They did have problems with bed bugs I believe but I think most hotels in ny are in the same boat if concerned you can check the latest reports here: http://bedbugregistry.com/metro/nyc/
Have also stayed in the Jumeirah Essex House which is rather nice but mighty expensive.
