The Beastie Boys are back with their first album in six years. 'To The Five Boroughs' has already reached the number one slot in the United States, Canada and Asia as well within Top Ten entries all over Europe. The B-Boys have been exceptional artists since day one, crossing over styles like Suburban Rap and Funk Rock. Though they've been accused of cultural pirating, they have 'treated rap as part of a post-punk musical underground, where the do-it-yourself aesthetics of hip-hop and punk weren't that far apart.'
In the early '80's, Micheal Diamond - Mike D - and Adam Yauch - MCA - had a hardcore NYC punk band and were seeking a replacement guitarist when they found Adam Horowitz - King Adrock. The trio did their hip hop homework and with Mike D on drums and vocals, MCA on bass and vocals and Adrock on guitar and vocals, they released Cookie Puss/Beastie Revolution in 1983. As the opening act for Madonna's Like a Virgin Tour in 1985, the Boys experienced huge crowds to a predominantly Black audience and subsequently felt a shift in their careers. Their first EP, Rock Hard on Def Jam Records saw the Boys touring with label friends Run DMC and LL Cool J. In 1986, the Boy's first full length album, 'Licensed to Ill'was relased and it became one of the best selling debut hip hop albums of all time, spending seven weeks at the top of the American pop charts.
Although the Boys' second album, Paul's Boutique (Capitol Records) wasn't well received by the press or the public in 1989, it is now considered to be one of the first albums to have predicted 'the genre-bending, self-referential pop kaleidescope of 90's pop'. On 'Check Your Head,' the Boys played their own drums, bass and guitar with added keyboard, and this album also soared to the top of the charts. The B-Boys were now seen as a revolutionary group of the 90's both through their music and as well as their magazine and label, 'Grand Royal'.
In 1994, the more hip hop focused, 'Ill Communication' saw its first single 'Sabotage' receive several nominations for the MTV Music Video Awards. 'In Sound from the Way Out' was released in 1996 with more groove funk music like 'soundtracks from '70's movies.' During the next couple of years, each of the Boys had his own project, notably Adam Yaunch who developed an interest in Tibet's political situation. As a result, he and the Boys organized several Freedom Concerts to help raise money for the people and culture of Tibet with artists including Rage Against the Machine, Bjork, The Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest and Bjork.
1998 saw the B-Boys change style with the more computerized, Hello Nasty album, which contains various 'Jazz and Bossanova musicians.' It sold over five million copies and the first single, Intergalactic entered the UK top 5 together with the Run DMC remix 'It's like That'.
In September 1999, the Boys picked up another award for Best Hip Hop Video with their Intergalactic single at the MTV Video Music Awards. Which made its own way back to the floor by a much sought after bootleg dance remix in 2004. You will also remember the robotic 'Body Movin' with a Fat Boy Slim Remix which became an MTV top-video, as well as the 'Remote Control EP' with Three Mc's And One Dj. The Boys also released several anthologies and compilations.
Expect old skool flava with contemporary beats on the B-Boys' new album, 'To The Five Boroughs' released by EMI. And for the record, 'Beastie' stands for Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence.
