Sunday 11th July - Judgement Sunday at Eden
We arrived at about 1.15 and the club was already rammed.
Riley and Durrant started the night off with a fantastic slightly laid-back
trance style set that really set the mood for the rest of the night.
Jules followed with his usual mix of tunes and sampling which was up to his usual high standards.
Eddie Halliwell then came on to the decks with an extremely disappointing set.
It was way too bosh-bosh and scratch-scratch and a lot of people decided to leave at this point...only to miss the best set of the entire night by a woman who I have no idea who she was. Eden resident Jorge Cruz was meant to be finishing the night off but that wasnt the case. This gal seamlessly banged out some quality trance, tech trance, and hard trance, and the amount of people left at the end of the night was many more than Ive seen at the end of a Judgement before.
Monday 12th July - Manumission at Privilege
I had doubts as to whether or not I should go to Manumission this year, as I went last and didnt enjoy the night that much. And I was extremely tempted to go and try Cacoon out. But as there were a few ibiza virgins amongst our group who wanted to go I decided I would too.
And it was a good choice I made. The music and the show were both a lot better this year than last, and the whole place was packed to capacity as usual.
I also heard for the first (second, and third time, as it was played 3 times in total) the tune of the summer. No, not Lola's Theme, but Deep Dish's Flash Dance. What a tune! Generally speaking I am more of a trance than house person, but this is a tune that just makes you dance! It has an incredible bass guitar riff that runs throughout. Martin Solveig's Rocking Music was also played and went down a treat too.
Tuesday 13th July - rest.
Well, actually we didnt really rest, but we just had a few drinks in town, and ended up going to check Play 2 out!! That really isnt a bad club considering its free entry and cheap drinks inside, and their resident DJ is pretty damn good (although he tries to do a little too much at once some times).
Wednesday 14th July - Meganite at Privilege
We were going to Subliminal at Pacha until we found out that tickets for it
were 48 Euros. I dont care how good a night it may have been, I flatly refuse to pay more than 45 Euros for entry. What swayed us even more was when we found out tickets for Mauro Picotto's brand new night Meganite at Privilege were only 16 Euros, and as we had missed out on Cacoon on Monday we decided to give a techno night a try.
When we arrived at Privilege our eyes nearly popped out of our heads. The entire top balcolony was closed (apart from the VIP area), and a make-shift DJ box had been created in front of the swimming pool and everything behind it curtained off. It was also very empty when we arrived. We spent a while in the back room where Coco Loco were playing some funky house, and by the time we ventured back into the main room again for Picottos set at 2 the open area was full to capacity (still only around 2500 people at the most I would say). We were seriously unimpressed with Picotto. He was a complete nut case, and just seemed to play randomly mashed up beats, not a very good experience for our first ever techno night. However, at 4 Chris Leibling came on and the place was rocking (especially when he dropped Murder Was The Bass into his set).
However, out of the 14 of us that went, only 2 of us were really enjoying it so we decided to cut our losses and leave early.
Thursday 15th July - hmmm I wonder...Cream at Amnesia
There are some things that I really do hate about Cream. The amount of people crammed into such a small space, the rediculous drink prices (10 Euros for a straight Red Bull), the amound of beer boys...but there are also so many things I love about it, hence why we went. I didnt think they would be able to top last year when they had Tiesto and PVD playing, but this year was just as good, if not better, with Tiesto and Adam Sheridan. Tiesto played a real mix of trance, hard trance, a couple of classics, and even some dark tribal/tech trance. Up to his usual imaculate standards, absolutely perfect. Adam Sheridan played more uplifting hard trance, but was still amazing. We stayed right until the last beat this year (we left a few minutes early last year), and that proved to be a slight mistake as when we got outside there must have been at least 300 people all queueing for taxis. Still after watching the sun come up for around half an hour we were at the front of the queue and on our way home.
Friday 16th July - Slinky at Eden
People bash Dave Pearce because of his radio show. All I have to say is go to one of these Slinky events and you will see what the Disco one can really do. He may not be the most technically perfect DJ in the world (we counted 2 mistakes in his set), but his choice of tunes is spot on. Dave defies the critics again.
At 4.30, Slinky resident Dan Bailey came on to the decks. His set was banging along nicely (better than Eddies at Judgement) when the Eden big wigs decided it would be a good idea to take down the section curtain that had been up for the entire night to keep people from going into the pit end. The result was there being roughly 30 of us left actually dancing in front of Dan, and the other 2000 or so standing down in the pit watching someone twirl a lit matchstick around, and then get covered in foam. Dan kept going for us lot regardless and played out a great set.
All in all this year topped last but only just. Judgement was acceptable but seems to be becoming a little dated in my opinion. Manumission was much better than last year - loved the rock-house feel a lot of the tunes had to them. Meganite was a nice change even if only 2 of us enjoyed it. Cream was on par, if not slightly better than last year. And Slinky was superb music and DJ wise, but the thing with the seperation curtain really annoyed me.
Tune of the summer has to be Deep Dish - Flash Dance. Deeeer Der Der Der Der
The nights in order of which I personally enjoyed them would have gone Cream, Manumission, Meganite, Slinky, Judgement, rest/Play 2 night.
We ate at The Orange Corner a few times and Im glad to say their food is up to scratch as usual. I completely avoided Burger King and KFC this year and felt so much better for doing so.
The seafront works are still no where near completion, I dont actually think they will be finished by the end of this season the rate they seemed to be working (we actually counted that a total of 16 tiles had been layed over a 2 day period and that was the only changes we could see happening).
Eden has had a slight redecoration, but nothing major - just a lick of paint inside, and some new curtains in the enterence way.
And thats it for another year - only 51 weeks to go...
