This was my 4th trip to Ibiza and like all previous trips, and everyone else on this board, so it seems, I leave the island feeling just as obsessed with that place as ever.
Even though we had a few bad things happen.. like the robbery and both hotels messing up on the rooms, I still can't wait until I go back there again next year.
I arrived very late on the 12th of August, I planned on staying in San An my first two nights before my friends arrived, just because I couldn't find anything in PDB that would let me book for less than 7 nights in August.
I'd booked in at the Florencio Hotel, after finally finding it ( after the wrong luggage had been put on the wrong carousel and I kept missing the road my hotel was on) at about 4:00 am, the hotel staff told me they had no room for me. ( Even though I booked with spotlight!) so they took me to another hotel down the road... but that meant I had to get up for checkout time and get back to Florencio for just another 2 nights.
Anyway I was glad to leave San An and move on to PDB on the Wednesday. However, when I arrived at Bon Sol, they gave us the wrong room. I had specifically said there were 3 people, and that I wanted a room with 3 beds in it. I emailed, and got this confirmed in writing that we would have this. So, when I walked into the room and saw one bed in there, I asked to change it, and they moved us down to Squash (still owned by bon sol) down the road. This was fine until the one day when ( as some of you have seen from my other post) we got robbed.
Enough of the bad stuff!
Still managed to get out to a beach every day ( except the last day when i spent it at the Ibiza police station.. ha ha!)
This year beaches were:
Cala Vadella
Sa Caleta
Cala d'en Serra
Cala Jondal
Cala Xuclar
Cala Xarraca
Cala d'hort
Ses Salines
Agua Blancas
not a beach, but the lookout near Na Xamena is breathtaking!
...I know I stopped at a few more along the way and a couple of them Salines and Cala d'en Serra , I went to more than once ( I just love Cala d'en serra)
I know I should have done this review when it was clear in my mind.
btw, does anyone know what the half done building at Cala d'en serra is? Was there ever anything else there?
Clubs
Monday 13th: DC10
Got there around 3pm. I know a lot of people don't like DC10 anymore or say its not like it used to be bla bla bla.. but i still really enjoyed myself. Ended up leaving at around 8. Since I knew I was still going to have one more Monday in Ibiza ( and I knew Josh Wink.. who i adore, would be there next week) I didn't go all out, considering it was my first party in ibiza s well.. ( Actually i ended up not going the following Monday , so good thing I went then!) I really like the atmostphere at DC10... it was quite busy, but not as packed as other clubs were, considering it was the middle of August as well
Monday 13th: Cocoon at Amnesia
I love Cocoon!! Its one of my favourite nights. In past years I got there at about 1:30 and there were always about 6 people in the dancefloor. This year... got there at 1:30 and it was already so busy! I was a bit apprehensive about James Holden as I presumed he would be a bit too experiemental for me, but i really enjoyed the night. Sven Vath was good as well and is always a treat to see him.
Tuesday 14th: Carl Cox with Michel de Hey
Now I just love Carl cox. Its such a good deal as well. I love how you get the terracey sound at the beginning... really enjoyed Michel de Hey's set and of course Carl Cox again at the end.
Wednesday 15th... took this night off and just went out for a meal
Thursday 16th.. Pacha David Guetta & Bob Sinclair at **** me I'm famous.
Now i'm pretty open to most kinds of music and clubbing in Ibiza. I like the housey hands in the air, but also like the gritty-ness of DC10. However, I have NEVER seen Pacha soooo packed. I literally just stood there for the first couple of hours. Also 60 euros?!?!?! and that was buying the tickets ahead of time... and waiting in a line that went all around the corner. The music was pure cheese... which I can deal with sometimes, but just not on a night like this. This was the only night I went to Pacha so its too bad it was like this for the only night i was there.
Friday 17th: Plan was to go to Pacha again for Pure Pacha. However we left it until too late to get tickets. By 1:30 , every single place we tried to buy tickets from were sold out. I have never heard of tickets being sold out before.. I guess we could have gone and bought tickets at the door, but didn't seem worth it. So , ended up going to Azuli at Space. Only 15 euro and the music was really good as well. Fedde le grand was on and is actually quite a good dj. Stayed until the lights came on and then..
Saturday 18th MATINEE!!!!!!!
ahhh I love Matinee and this one was good as always. Have to say it was one of my top parties. I couldn't beleive how busy it was though... Got there at 8:00 am and then waited in line for an hour!! When we got in.. ALL rooms were open the discoteca was opened up fully .. I couldn't beleive how busy it was... It was busier than We love... When I was at Matinee before, only part of the discoteca was opened up and there were about 14 people dancing... then filled up later nicely..
Oh yeah one of the dumbest things I saw this year in Ibiza... a bunch of kids sprinkling MDMA on their ham sandwiches ... hmnnnn
Anyway, I just love love love Matinee!
Sunday 19th August: We love... this is always a good party.. However I was surprised to see how empty it was from about 6:00 - 10:00. I know a lot of people go for the afternoon only, but still, I have never been when I've seen such a lack of people at that time. Especially in mid August!! The terrace was very hot and busy. Listened to a bit of Steve Lawler, Miss Kitten and Ivan Smagghe.. All 3 of them were very good. .. actually Lawler wasn't so much.. I'd say he was only a little better than alright.
Monday 20th August:
After the Azuli, Matinee and We love session I was so exhausted on Monday, I didn't make it to DC10 for josh wink, but still had an incredible time at my second Cocoon night. Only thing was seeing a fight The guy looked very scarily angry too..
Tuesday 21st August: Carl Cox and Cristian Varela at Space!
AS I said before, I simply love this night.. and I just LOVED hearing some good proper techno by varela.. I like my minimal now and then... but it was sooooooooo goooooood to hear some good proper techno again.. LOVED it!!
Yeah so this was an absolutely fantastic night. When I left, shortly after 7, it was absolutely pouring with rain. My 4th time in Ibiza, i have never seen it rain this much until then. i was ankle deep in water walkig home thrugh the space parking lot and down that road.
Well, then came the only really sad part of the trip. I won't go into detail again, but came home to find out our room had been robbed. So, instead of spending my last day at a nice beach somewhere, I spent it talking to our hotel manager and sitting at the very lovely, secure police station in Ibiza.
I got my flight back to London the following morning. Leaving Ibiza it was nice and sunny.. coming back to Stansted it was 14 and rainy
Anyway, despite all the bad things and annoying hotels, I still had a fabulous holiday. I don't know why I can't come away from Ibiza and think "Ok, thats it, I had a great holiday, but don't think i'll be back next year"
This is what I thought 4 years ago, I was living in my peasant village in Japan, and thought " I need somewhere different than here for a quick holiday. I need to get this clubbing thing out of my system"
Ha ha. I just can't imagine not going there each year. I still like going to other places, and I like to go 'traveling' as well.. but I can't imagine missing a year of it. My family and cousins think I'm weird for going back again and again, but oh well. They are the ones missing out!
Hopefully I'll be able to go somewhere else next summer as well ( I think I already have 4 wedding trips booked for next summer! ) but I need to fit in an Ibiza trip as well!!
Too bad I don't have any photos and videos to show for it.. as I love taking lots of photos. As much as I love the clubbing, I love getting out of the grimy tacky pdb every day and going off to one of the many beaches. Only thing was I was surprised by how chilled I felt some nights.. I even put on my sweater one morning. I thought August was supposed to be HOT..but I didn't find it any hotter than other times I'd been. I know, I know I'm Canadian and I'm supposed to not feel the cold or something, but I just hate anything below 30!
hmnn.. well I thought it would be a short review, I guess its not as long as some I've seen on here!
So now begins the countdown to 2008
See you next year!! (review with photos next time! )
