Sorry its really long, got a bit carried away when writing it. It was intended for another board too, but thought I would share it here for everyone too!
After a couple of year’s absence, I decided it was time to go back to the white isle for a week, and with the girlfriend wanting to go on holiday, it was a convenient excuse not to get stuck in Tenerife again.
Opting to go early season (Ibiza is expensive enough at the best of times!), I arrived Wednesday 30th June about 10pm to our appartments in Playa D’Bossa/Figurettas, but opted not to really try any clubs that night. I can definitely say Ibiza is still one of those strange/beautiful places that no matter how long its been since you were last there, when you arrive, it seems like yesterday. Was so good to be back.
Thursday I decided to do the usual touristy thing (and had the girlfriend moaning she wanted some ‘tan’ or something?) and spent the day on the beach after strolling about Ibiza town late morning. Had a quick look at the massive yachts in the harbour and wondered why I didn’t arrive in one. One in particular was called ‘Why Worry’….yeah indeed if you’ve a £10m boat.
Thursday night was spent in again, nothing really was taking my fancy apart from maybe Deep Dish opening but didn’t really want to spent loads of money on a night that could turn out to be plodding prog. Went up into Ibiza town again though, on a boat from Playa D’Bossa, which was amusing seeing the girlfriend turn green as it got thrown all over the place in the waves. Arrived at the Base bar for a nice few expensive drinks. Still definitely one of my favourite bars, but the place comes at a price. Note this year that the bar is back to the place it was 2 years ago, not the location it moved to last year. Apparently they had a ‘falling out’ with Space and so now the other one is closed again.
Headed back to the apartments about 2 am after checking out a club near our place called ‘Spasms’ (I’m not joking!!). The was a place of ridicule for 3 of our group of 6 two years ago when they got drunk and ended up at this cheesy place. Can certainly say I’m glad I didn’t go there 2 years ago, not unless you fancy hearing remixes of Britney and Cher all night long. Still, I’ve got photos and I’ll be taking the piss shortly as they couldn’t afford to go this year and I can see their jealousy already.
Friday did the same again during the day, apart from taking a walk down towards Space in the nice 32 degree heat. Place still looks pretty much same from the outside as it always has done, apart from a few changes that I’ll come to later. Friday night decided Pure Pacha was the place to be heading too, after all, Jeff Mills was playing. After a few drinks at Base, headed down to Pacha, and must say as it was my first time there, when I walked in, the place is pretty phenomenal. Such a complete mix of crowd there, 60+ super-rich retired people mixing on the terrace with young clubbers is funny to watch. The club itself for those that haven’t been there is like a labyrinth of platforms, stairs, arches etc everywhere, great for exploring around. Friday night by 3am the place was rammed, a mix of both visitors to the island and locals. The chandeliers hanging from the ceiling glistening in the beam of the massive crowd below. About 3am I headed back inside off the terrace to check who was playing, as I was really looking forward to Mills. To my surprise, a certain Erick Morrilo was behind the decks, though he wasn’t advertised at all. I didn’t take long for me to realise Mills wasn’t going to show up, and he didn’t. Ahh well, Morillo, whilst not being the most interesting dj, managed to really impress me with his skills behind the decks, really working 3 cdjs with loops etc and then chopping it all up in a pioneer efx unit. Most notable choon of the night was by the Scissor Sistors (hello…can anybody hear me?) which he looped and looped until the place went wild. About 5am Pete Tong showed, and took to the decks. Announcing on the mic ‘thanks for Morillo for stepping in last minute….Jeff Mills couldn’t be bothered to turn up for some god-damn-reason’. Tong, like Morillo was playing completely off Cdr again, even stuff that has been out properly on vinyl for months. Seems even the likes of Tong see it as the way forward. Pete even tried his best with loops etc, and had a cycloops linked up, but unfortunately he couldn’t compete with the likes of Erick in the technical department. Playing stuff like ‘Flashdance’, ‘Flower Power’, ‘Bombdogs’ and ‘Diamond Life’ he kept his set fairly housey, whist the crowd there really seemed to be lapping up. Was pretty knackered by about 6.30 and had the girlfriend moaning a bit, so decided to leave then. The place was still rocking though, and by all accounts, it probably would have continued to well past 9am. As we left, the sun was rising over Eivissa and people were still entering the club. You’ve got to love Ibiza!
Played it easy in the day Saturday, before heading over to San Antonio arriving about 10pm. After giving the girlfriend a tour of all the shit places in the West End, made my way down to Mambo, just catching the end of Morales Def Mix warm-up. Mambo is still great as ever, nice and chilled, and can enjoy your drink down on the beach. Had the usual mix of people there, including beach fire-dancers and some bloke that walked out into the sea, completely dressed up for a night out and threw himself into the water. Caught Pete Gooding play which was wicked, most popular tune of the night was either Martin Solveig’s new one or Flashdance.
Headed back to Playa D’Bossa bout 1.30, was thinking of heading to Pacha for Def Mix, but decided to save the money for Space the following day, Ibiza is great, if though a very expensive place.
Sunday chilled again during the day before heading down to Space about 11pm. Arrived to a very full terrace, with Steve Lawler ripping the place up. The place was yet again really rocking, Steve playing quite hard tribal/house music. Powering a track down and dropping ‘Knights of the Jaguar’, the place really exploded, about 1000 hands in the air, many of them Spaniard, obviously delighted about Portugal’s loss earlier in the evening. Just before the end of the Lawlers set headed inside the club to see all these new changes. The main room now has little levels and stuff at the sides, a massive bar at the back and a smaller main dancefloor. The old gallery at the back of the room now is a separate room, with windows looking down over the main room. Through another set of doors is a new chillout terrace on the roof of the club, which I would have to say is the best thing to be added to the club. A really nice vibe up there, with Jose Padilla supplying the tunes. If you go to the club this year, be sure to check it out.
Went back downstairs for the start of Digweed at 12.30ish. He started with his usual pretty dark prog/house, getting the room into a chunky groove. He quickly moved onto harder stuff though, and by 2am he was really tearing the place up with pretty harsh techno. Now, I’m normally a techno-head but this stuff was something else, it was dark but kept the place jumping. Had to sit out for about half hour but enjoyed listening. By far the hardest set I’ve heard from Diggers, he was very obviously on form, just not what I was expecting from him. Sorry people, didn’t id any tunes in there all night, but when I asked Zabiela later that night if he was going to play Talk and Ashken’s new track, Zabiela replied that John had already done so.
Left the place at a stupidly early 4am as we were heading to Formentura the next day and needed to be up for 9.30. Is Space better now? I would say yes. Before it had something lacking from it a bit. If you didn’t like the music in the main room before you were stuck with it, at least now there are two rooms. The dancefloor is easier for getting about too, so you don’t end up getting pushed to the back of the room. The system is still just as good though, stand in the middle of the floor and you can feel the ol’ ribs puncturing the lungs. Just as it’s meant to be.
Monday spent the day in Formentura, a really beautiful island south of Ibiza. Very unspoilt there, with no high-rise buildings, and clear untouched coastlines. If you ever have a day free in ibiza, try any make a visit there. Boats leave from Ibiza town/figurettas/playa d’bossa and its only about 15euro to go, money well spent in my opinion if you want to see both sides of life in the med.
Tuesday was chilling again, before heading down to Pacha for Underwater. Lottie and Tim Deluxe alongside Cassius were due to play, and I wasn’t too sure what to be expecting from the latter. I needn’t be worried though, as all 3 played well. Lottie in particular was very good. The club certainly wasn’t as busy as Friday night, and there were more English people than any other, but I’m glad I went as the vibe was still great in there. Managed to find even more parts of the club I hadn’t found before, including seemingly walking into the VIP area unnoticed, always a result. Kept off the drinks though, as this is Pacha we are talking about, and they were 10 euro each, I even made a trip to the global room for a laugh though, Trevor Nelson was getting the crowd grooving along nicely. Was good to see all the genres getting mixed up in Pacha just like how they used to when the place opened.
Once again left early at about 4.30am as had to be checked out the apartment by 12. Chilled on the Wednesday before coming back to a crap UK. Without doubt, I’ve not lost my love for Ibiza at all, even if I didn’t manage to check half the things I meant to before I went (like Underground). That’s the way Ibiza is though, you go with all the intentions and then you just get sucked into the island life and end up doing something else. For me though, personally I love it. As soon as I can get back I will be, and I urge everyone to go who can. The island has almost totally lost that hooligan element it had to it (as pictured in Ibiza uncovered) from 3 or 4 years back and now it’s really returning to its roots (bar a few places in San An of course). If I would offer one piece of advice though, if you are there for a week or so, please please do something other than clubbing. Find the real Ibiza past the night clubs and bars, because there really is pretty island hidden behind all the nightlife. Anything at all, go down to Salinas beach, visit Formentura or even look for Atlantis, i’m sure you won’t regret it.
