My Ibiza experiences - 2002 to ??

Well I've been lurking on here on and off for a while now and I felt I should contribute and finally write something. I've been to Ibiza 5 times since my first visit in 2002, and am hoping to go again next year. I have loved every minute of being there, spent far too much money there, and drunk far too much. From what I can remember of the earlier years, here any my thoughts and findings. I hope you enjoy.

2002 (June-July)

I'd not long been into dance music and had seen the Ibiza uncovered series on TV. I used to go to clubs in the UK, however these were only very commercial dance nights with mates, nearly always as a place to carry on drinking after 11 when the pubs closed. I missed the whole being young and going to Ibiza, stupidly I wrote it off as being far too expensive and ultimately went to Ayia Napa instead. I've since learnt the error of my ways although my wife and I have returned to Cyprus and loved it.

Anyway there was a group of us whole used to meet in London for a few drinks on a Friday night and one of my friends found an offer to go to Ibiza - £130 all in with flights AND hotel in late June. The only trouble was, it was with the 18-30 crowd. I agreed, expecting all the bad things, but can never resist a bargain, so off we went. Flights were at unsociable times, and we got there about 3am. I thought we'd head straight to our respective rooms, but no, we went straight to the West End, and started to drink. We finished this soon, and went back to the hotel (the Del Mar in San An). I was expecting the room to be a complete disappointment, but I was surprised at how clean it was. The one thing I wanted to do that week was go to Judgement Sundays, but instead our group got convinced to do the 18-30- package......which sounds terrible I know, but as it turned out, it was OK. From memory, we went to Es Paradis for the first night, for a night called Cultural (I think), I remember it being a trance night which I rather enjoyed. We also did the usual boat party, West End driknig games etc and generally had a great time. This was it, my love for Ibiza was set, and I didn't want to go home.

As a first impression, with my expectations set rather low, Ibiza had got in my head and would refuse to go. My only regret was not going to any of the bigger club nights, but the company i was with and the atmosphere meant this wasn't an issue.

2003 (July)

So, after 2002's adventures I really wanted to return, although most of the group's circumstances had changed. I was getting more and more into the trance/hard house scene and some of the line ups were looking really good for this year. My then girlfriend (now wife's) sister was a travel agent so I booked a week with a friend who had just come out of a long term relationship and was looking for a fun week after all the rubbish they'd been through.

We stayed at the Ibiza Rocks hotel, although it wasn't called that back then - I can't remember the name now.

We did a lot of clubbing that week, and again I was keen to do the larger clubs, so we ended up going to Judgement Sundays, Manumission, Cream and Space (can't remember which night) as well as other nights in and around the West End. I also took the plunge to hire a car for the day, a Peugeot 306 Cabriolet. At the time this was still a nice car, but the CD player didn't work, and I ended up driving to Cream which wasn't great. In fact I didn't enjoy Amnesia at all, far too expensive, rude door and bar staff and generally finding it a bit, well, overrated I felt. I will say now for the record that I ONLY drink, there are no other substances involved, there are reasons for this but this is another story. The whole Peugeot thing was rubbish and to this day I vowed never to buy one of these pieces of junk (I am a petrolhead, so this is important to me!).

I also took the opportunity to revisit some other places from 2002, namely the Curry Club in San An (great food imo) and Sunset Strip.

All in all another fantastic trip, and now the need to go back in September was calling. Shame the money was stopping me lol

2006

I missed going to Ibiza each year that passed. My life was moving forward, my wife and i bought a house together and I have just graduated from uni after 7 years studying (part time during when I also worked).

I met a few friends at uni and as the numbers attending dropped you talk to more and more people. I tunred out some people here were Ibiza veterans, or had always wanted to go. One person, it was his 40th, and although we had been clubbing a few times in London, he had never been to Ibiza. Also, I met someone through some car forums, and he was working in Ibiza that year, so again I booked to go for a week, with said mate from uni. One slight issue, his mrs WAS NOT happy at all, she claimed we said a few days, not a week. Apparently she went ballistic at him, and so we had to rearrange the flights and have one less day there. One less day, like that would make any difference!

This time we stayed at the Abrat Hotel, in San An, which was pleasant enough. It included breakfast, which I think we made it in time for, just the once lol

Anyway, Judgement Sundays was done and lived up to expectations, as it was brilliant, then Extreme Euphoria (which the worker mate got us in for free), but to make a change of scene we went to DC10, which wasn't my thing at the time, but I totally got it, and loved it. Slight trouble getting back to San An, but there we go! Overall another great time was had, although my friend's mrs would never quite have the same attitude towards me again, I think she thinks I'm a bad influence.

We also explored Ibiza town for the first time and Bora Bora, both of which I enjoyed, although Ibiza town I'd like to go back to later in the night as I was there too early (with hire car).

2011 (July)

Memory gets better here, but I'll complete this when I have more time. There is more detail for the next 2 years' visits.

Hope you liked so far.

I think the island has changed in that it is cleaner, and seems to have lost some of the yobs that used to go there, although that may just be a coincidence. In some ways it hasn't changed at all, I mean the atmosphere is still there, it's still the same place that I love but almost feels like some of the worst areas have been cleaned up!

Anyway I'll get round to the next part as soon as I have some free time.

I have been going since 1998 and I have to say I do not like the way the island has changed, I personally hate the way Mambo/Sunset Strip is now and all this "VIP" crap, I hate the ban on day time parties, I hate the amount of "TOWIE" lookalikes that visit. I hate the way the clubs rob you for drinks and the general greed and commercialism of the scene there now. However in saying this I still love the place and this is why I have been 12 times in 15 years with my 13th visit next Friday.

Well, I still haven't finished...oops. I was ill during the latter part of 2013 however I will try and get this done soon, sorry!

Looks like Ibiza 2013 may not happen, but 2014....... we'll see!

Well my apologies for the very late reply, but here it is, three years after my last visit! Keep lurking on the forums to see how things are shaping up, always aiming to go but never quite making it. I WILL be back...

2011

So I'd missed Ibiza for five years now, and I'd moved house, got a new job, and was married. Surely going to Ibiza again wasn't going to happen? Well yes it was, and this year was one of the best and worst trips I'd had. In my new job, there was a culture of general drinking and banter and there were many nights out. So why not continue this, and take it to Ibiza? So the plan was set, there was four of us in the end, we booked it all independently, and based on previous experiences I knew 4-5 days was going to be enough for us.

So the plan was set, back to San Antonio, Easyjet first thing in the morning from Gatwick, then return mid week. We pre ordered tickets for Judgement Sundays, and also the pukka up boat party. We also managed to find an incredible deal at a hotel that was all inclusive, and a short walk from San Antonio centre (about 10 mins). What could possibly go wrong?

So we got to Gatwick and got through security, it was about 5am. I and another one of us wanted a beer, while another friend was warning us we should go and walk to the plane. Never mind that, lets have a drink and walk after, it will only be about 10 mins or so. Wrong, the queue was long, and we heard the last call for the flight. We were the last to board. Yes we were the ones holding everyone up! Ooops!

Got to Ibiza, and got out of the airport and a taxi to the hotel. I was so excited, like a child at Xmas. The sights, the sounds and the atmosphere was all there, I felt like I'd come home. We arrived at the hotel, and unbelievably two of our rooms were ready, so we got changed, sun tan lotion on and straight to the pool, and see what this all inclusive was like. By lunchtime we were wasted, and remember we had been up since about 3am. Had some lunch and now I know why the deal was so good, the food was not great. Never mind it was a good price and the beer was cold. We then had a snooze in the afternoon although I don't remember sleeping that much, and we went for a walk around, the Cafe del Mar, and Savannah and other bars (more drink). We already had tickets for JS, so we stayed out in the West End, returning to the hotel to shower, and on the way one of us fell down a kerb and injured his ankle. He carried on, and by the time he got back home, it had swelled quite badly although thankfully not broken.

So we went to JS, and a great time was had by all. The first day had gone well and I'd introduced 3 new converts to Ibiza.

So Monday I woke up and felt quite unwell, went to meet the others by the pool, who were already drinking. I'd missed breakfast. Oh well. So I got a beer and carried on. We had the usual rep visits and we ended up buying tickets for Space and a trip to a bar near there that had free drink. Great. Space and free beer. I don't remember much of Monday day time, although I recall the bar and Space. I think we hired a sailing boat, which I hated. By this time I was wasted, and had been drinking solidly for 2 days. We are not loud drunks, we are not San An beer boys, however we were all having a great time in Space. Mark Knight was playing and in the five years I'd been away from Ibiza, my music tastes had changed so although I still liked trance etc, I was starting to appreciate other music and DJs. I really enjoyed that night, and the holiday was going really well. We left Space, and tried to find a bus or taxi back to San An. We struggled with this, and ended up on a coach that took us back there for 3 euros I think, but on the coach, I felt bad. My friends carried me home, we all decided it was a good night, and they have never let me forget THAT Monday night ha ha.

Woke up to a phone call on Tuesday, my wife, I had to go home, this was urgent. My head was very sore from the night before and all I wanted to do was get in a cab and go, I needed to be back home. I managed to get a flight from Ibiza during that evening, so it was booked. Tuesday was a write off. I couldn't have a beer as I needed to drive when I got home, I was worried about things at home, and everything felt so unreal. Quite possibly the worst time I've had on holiday, let alone Ibiza and so I left that night and hoped that my friends would continue to party (by all accounts they did).

2012

The previous year’s events had meant that Ibiza was not so good that time, although I wanted to go again. You will notice that my wife never comes with me to Ibiza, we do go away separately sometimes, and we both feel this is good as it enables us both to enjoy the things we like.

So the trip was booked, and again the same group of friends as in 2011 but less one, and a different hotel (Hotel Orosol). This was a great hotel, but no pool! D'oh! Was probably the best hotel I’d stayed in in terms of staff, cleanliness and the breakfast was OK.

Early flight from Gatwick again, and same situation. Landed, taxi, hotel, beer and breakfast. J Sundays tickets booked. What I didn't realise was that Spain was in the Euro Cup final (not really into football), and were playing (and won) when we were there. The atmosphere was electric. Not being a massive football fan, I don't normally get it, but that day was superb. Judgement Sundays was as good as it's ever been although this time it was with Full on Ferry. Managed to beat my own personal record of being out til 7am (note - no substances!). Sadly one of us was pickpocketed on the way back to the hotel which put a dampener on the mood slightly. During the day we had also seen a Ferrari driving round San Antonio, but more of this later.

I don’t remember much of Monday now, we probably spent quite a bit of time mooching around San Antonio, but then we figured it would be better to chill out by a pool if possible, but our hotel didn’t have one! So we bought some beers and got a cab to Bora Bora and stayed here for a while. Now I’ve been to Bora Bora before and rather liked the atmosphere, and although it’s not the sort of music I like, it suits the mood and I usually get into it. We stayed here for a few hours, got more and more drunk. I will say it was here I felt that the TOWIE lot were taking over Ibiza, I’d not noticed it before, and this made me feel rather self-conscience, I’m not overweight but could do with losing a kilo or two. Anyway a few beers later I didn’t really care and we stayed for a few hours. Left as we wanted to have a night in the West End and on the way out of Bora Bora we saw two nice cars, available to hire (a Ferrari and a Lamborghini). Both on Italian number plates which I thought was odd, we did consider a drive but had far too much to drink, would have been great, but maybe another day!

So we had a night in the West End and that was good, loads of cheap drink. I wanted to try Play 2 as I hadn’t been there since 2006, and to be honest I wished I hadn’t bothered. The whole place smelt of sick and the clientele wasn’t that great. One beer and we left, I was disappointed as I’d had good times here before and read good reviews. We spent quite a lot of time in Amsterdam Bar, a place I’d liked from most visits to Ibiza. A fairly early night as we left at about 2am, much to my disappointment.

Tuesday – this was our night to go to Tonight at Amnesia. Didn’t do too much during the day, and so we went to the West End for a while before we got a taxi to the club. In fact for some reason, we ended up with wristbands for a free entry to Colours at Es Paradis, with Sean Tyas playing I thought this was a bit of a result. My friends hadn’t yet seen Es Paradis, and I know it’s not the greatest club ever however it was rude not to go with free entry, we’d then leave at about 1am to go to Amnesia. Sadly somehow we ended up in some obscure local bar that was cheap (2 euro a pint) and so didn’t get to Es Paradis, I wasn’t overly happy but there you go, one of us didn’t really want to go and I didn’t really know why.

Anyway got to Amnesia, and although I’d bought tickets on here with Paypal, I didn’t think you’d need ID with Paypal, and I was wrong. Thankfully the door staff let me in, and this wasn’t a great night. In enjoyed Annie Mac’s set, but it was very crowded, and my mate wasn’t feeling too good and was asleep in the club. At about 3 we left, and so I thought I’d wander to the West End for a walk around but by then the mood had passed and I retired to my room.

Wednesday, was feeling fresh from a relatively good night’s sleep and today we decided to go and look at the go kart track outside of San Antonio then do some more drinking. I figured we should also visit Café Del Mar once more and perhaps eat at Curry Club (one of my favourite restaurants in San Antonio). Kart track was very expensive we thought and so we left that, and went to a bar near the harbour (for a cold soft drink!). In the end we looked again at that Ferrari driving round San An and decided that was a good thing to do, and yes indeed it was. Nothing felt quite so epic as driving round Ibiza in an open top bright red Ferrari. We didn’t go to Curry Club nor Sunset Strip so had missed that 2 years in a row now.

So after that we did what we do best and found some bars and had a few drinks and then ventured into the West End. We had an early-ish flight home on Thursday morning and so didn’t go mad. And that ends the review.

I love going to Ibiza. 2012 didn’t quite have the excitement that other years had had for various reasons, however I’d still love to go again. I was 34 on my last visit there and although that is at the upper end of the age range in Ibiza (from what I could see) it is one place where I don’t think that really matters. In fact in 2011 we met a couple who had been to San Antonio 19 times, and were in their late 40s I’d say. Good on them.

All were good and clean, with Del Mar being basic but easy staggering distance of the West End although the best was la Sirena although it was a reasonable walk from San Antonio centre.

Would I go back? Yes I most certainly would. This year’s not going to happen but maybe next year, it seems a lot of my friends are now growing up and whilst we are now all married and kids and mortgages etc most see this as a way not to do this sort of thing anymore. I’d do things a little differently next time though; I’d like to go in September, I’d like to go to Ibiza Town and I’d like to do some other club nights as well as the favourite places. I love the music, the atmosphere and general vibe around the place. In fact I was describing it to someone the other day, and you do feel it as soon as you get off the plane at the airport. I was 24 when I went there to start, one of my only regrets was not going sooner , maybe in the late 90s but then maybe I wouldn’t have had the money back then.

Ibiza town was definitely a nice surprise on my trip this year, less touristy and more relaxed, I wish I had spent more time there. Those small bars in front of the promenade are so cool. I would definitely do other stuff as well on my next trip. I didn't even do a night out on the west end as I'd always go to the major clubs, but it looks like fun.

I bought all my tix for Amnesia via PayPal and they never asked for my ID but I knew they were supposed to...

It was nice reading your review. On all my vacations, this is the one where I had the most stuff go wrong. I guess I lost control a lot and wasn't vigilant with some things, so I get why some of your mishaps happened. Live and learn I suppose....

Thanks. I know you can't plan everything, and I guess I've been fairly lucky that nothing has gone too badly wrong (especially after reading some of the reviews on here!). But yes, live and learn!

Just wish I could remember more about my other trips there, I'm sure it'll come back to me eventually.
