My brief (and probably uninteresting) review Jun 2-12

Hi all,
Thought I would just put up my review of my 1 week trip from the USA, 6/2 thru 6/12. I'll try to be brief since so much stuff happened I could probably write a novel. This is my third time to IBZ, but the prior times have always had something wrong with them. In particular, the last time I went I had swine-flu (it was that outbreak) by the end of the trip and an allergic reaction to my contact lenses so I couldn't see crap by the end of the day. My two week disposables were lasting one day. But I digress. This trip, even though it was early in the season, was the best by far. Absolutely monstrous. We ended up having to travel to IBZ early since my clubbing buddy happened to be in Europe at this time so we had to go at the tale end of his trip.

By the way: literally EVERY night included a mix of Goyte. Every.. night.. ??!!??

I put more details into my restaurant review since it seemed there was a shortage of those:

First off, I got an overnight from the USA to Munich then on to IBZ the next day. I ended up not sleeping at all on the plane, so by the time I arrived in Ibiza at 5pm on Saturday, I hadn't slept in like 30 hours. I was toasty toast. In Munich I had a 6 hour layover, and am very proud of myself that I got off my ass and took the train into the city. I went into Marienplatz, found a beer garden, and had an awesome lunch of beer, sausage and 'kraut in the warm midday sun. Awesome start to the trip. I can't believe how easy it was and how much better than just sitting at the airport. Anyway, when I arrived in Ibiza, the ever vigilant Spanish national security dropped me off in the EU arrivals (I suppose this was fine since I cleared immigration in Munich) and then proceeded to put my checked bags into the EU arrivals. Foolishly, I had assumed they would do what they were supposed to, and run them through the non-EU bags side. I went into the non-EU bag pickup area, only to pass through one-way doors, into an empty room. I should probably add that my stellar mobile phone company AT&T messed up my mobile account prior to leaving so I had no way of calling anyone. Not a soul was around. I ended up being trapped there for about an hour before I started banging on stuff to get security's attention. With the skillful use of grunts and sign language, I managed to communicate that my bags had incorrectly gone to the EU side, and that they needed to let me out of the locked down non-EU section. Finally found my bags. Should I go through customs with them? Nah, just walk out, they gestured. Ah... okayyyy. Finally found my buddy, who had no clue what had happened to me due to the phone blackout. Anyway, that night, we walked over to Bora Bora, realized it still sucked as much as 2 years ago, and went back to our hotel. We stayed in Ushuaia and absolutely loved it. I put up a brief review in the Open Chat if anyone needs that.

We had rented a car, which ended up being awesome since we could get back from clubs easily and could spend any awake time exploring the island. It also meant we weren't limited to the restaurants we could go to, which was huge.

Sunday went to the pirate tower by Cala d'Hort (?). Worst trail markers ever, if you can consider them that. It just pointed to the general direction of the tower. We ended up following a couple things that looked like trails, but weren't, and ended up essentially picking our way through brush and rocks, over the mountain and down the other side. At least it we had fun doing it, heh. Pretty nice views too. Back at the hotel we met our neighbors at Ushuaia, who 2 nights later, left us all of their leftover alcohol on our balcony as they flew out (6 bottles of vodka, etc. !!) Sunday night, I managed to convince my buddy to go to Luciano @ Pacha, which ended up being an awesome night. Prior to going to Pacha, we hung out on the harbor having drinks at the little bars. Ended up meeting tons of people, and getting involved in some funny soap opera type stuff between two of the workers. Think Romanian women, anal sex discussions, lots of alcohol, and some crazy ass love triangle you couldn't even make up if you wanted to. After we tore ourselves away from this drama, we headed over to Pacha. Luciano's night was medium full, and I had plenty of room to dance. However, the amount of glass on the floor set a record for the week, and I was pulling out huge shards out of my very thick sole'd sneakers (thankfully). Luciano was great, and the whole night had a fun vibe.

Monday we hung out on the beach in front of Ushuaia, on those rental sunbeds, and polished off 3 bottles of wine. We were feeling pretty nice, had an amazing day, met some cool girls that were sitting beside us. As an aside, its funny how observant yet misguided women are: The girls sitting beside us mentioned that they were laughing when earlier we were 'sitting with jaws open checking out a hot girl walking by' when in reality, I was pointing out to my buddy how incredible it is that a woman can have a hot body but such a busted up face... it was more a stare of disbelief. Anyway, Monday night, went to Tiesto's night and actually had a really good time. There was the typical group of young arab guys with too much money in VIP acting like complete douches, but I at least got a very good laugh out of them. While Tiesto's night was pretty full, we had room to dance once we moved to the back of the room. Had the opportunity to watch two guys accidentally hit on the same chick (I guess one got involved once the first left to buy drinks). Then when the second one returned, they proceeded to introduce themselves to each other and even make polite conversation. But neither left their prize. It was a funny story to watch unfold while I danced. We stayed until close.. great stuff.

Tuesday was an off night, just drove the island some more, had a really nice dinner, then ended our night at the bars by the harbor. Hung out there and drank while the remainder of the previously mentioned soap-opera played out. Got back by 3am.

Wednesday, we hung out by the beach again, ate a reasonable dinner. I really wanted to see Mark Knight since I like his podcasts, so we went to Space. I think this night will be better as the island fills, but it was a relatively small crowd for space. Advantage was that there was plenty of room to dance. Downside is that people can see you dance (and I suck, I think). Probably our worst night out of the week, even though it was still fun. I do like Mark Knight's stuff. I just wish there was more of a crowd.

Thursday we went to Ses salinas and spent the day there. Very nice. Then began the epic night.. Luciano/Garnier started up at Ushuaia (his opening night there). Luciano twice in one week? Yes please! Amazing show. After that awesomeness was done at midnight, we headed over to Pacha for Guetta's night. We went "tourist" VIP (as you guys put it) to try to dilute the amount of douches in the place. I must say, I liked Guetta's set. It wasn't as commercial as in the past. Let me just say, VIP is the only way to do Guetta's night. The main dance floor was absolutely RAMMED. I would have slit my own throat with one of the pieces of glass from the floor if I had to try to dance in there. In VIP, we met everyone around us (all very nice people, not a single stuckup idiot), the alcohol was good, we had room to dance, and there were women absolutely everywhere. Everywhere. I mean, there was vagina literally coming out of the walls. One time I went to put my drink on the table, and I accidentally put it into a vagina. It was crazier than Las Vegas VIP. And the beauty of unisex bathrooms is a new found pleasure of mine- you have minutes to chat up the hot chick in front of you while trying not to pee yourself. I will never ever do Guetta's night without VIP any more. Stayed until we closed the place. Most of the wimps in VIP had left by that time.. no endurance I guess.. or they all paired up like mating gerbils and left.

Friday. Drove around the island during the day. Almost killed ourselves as our lawnmower of a Ford Fiesta traversed the slippery rocks uphill to a deserted beach in the north of the island by Sant Miguel, while a dropoff into the ocean loomed on our side. Nice little adventure. Drove around some more visiting little lookouts, then headed back to our hotel. We watched the Euro (PLD-GRK) at Ibiza Rocks. Me, one other Polish guy, and one Greek. Pretty sad crowd, but then again, didn't expect much. We took the night off and went to KM5 for dinner. Awesome time.

Saturday was more screwing-around-that-you-guys-wouldn't-be-interested in during the day. Did some more Euro watching (Denmark-NED this time.. much bigger crowd but only two Dane's: my buddy and one other guy) A little bit of the old town in the evening, and dinner at the very mediocre La Brasa (can I please have those 4 hours of my life back?). The only thing that would have made it worth it is if one of the many hot girls that ate there sat in my lap for the duration of dinner. We went home contemplating what we had just spent our money on. Screw it. We then prepared to go to Amnesia's opening. Now everyone has their individual likes, dislikes, biases, superiority complexes, etc. So you may disagree, make fun of me or whatever.. However, -this night was absolutely f'in EPIC-.. I mean, EPIC. Maybe it was because I was in a good mood, maybe because the drinks went down well, but it really doesn't matter. The end result is the same: this was one of my best clubbing experiences ever. I loved the music, the crowd was awesome (in their endurance too), there was some room to dance but it was full enough at the same time. The fact that the sun was up in the morning and the music/crowd was still slamming was phenomenal. Anyway, had to tear myself away at 8am (yes I know too early for an opening) but my buddy was running out of steam.

Sunday we crashed by the pool since we needed the rest. In the evening, we went to town and had a good dinner. Ended up at "We Love" opening at Space. I had a pretty good night there too, although the music was very much up and down. The laser show was amazing tho.. and I freakin love lasers !! Danced up a storm, finished more Redbull than I ever thought would be possible, and had no Redbull hangover in the AM !

Monday we took it easy, relaxed, drove to the vineyard (Can Rich) to grab some wine for someone back home. Ran into the Spanish Siesta where there was no one doing cr*p from 1pm thorugh 4pm (it seemed). Finished with a good dinner, and flew out the next day.

There are many, many additional details which are locked in the memory vault and fill in all the holes, but I can't go posting those. It was just a phenomenal trip.

Great review, mate. Some cracking reviews already this year.

Is this really what we've got to with clubbing now? Are we really seeing nights that are so ridiculously busy, so dangerously packed that you have to go VIP to actually have room to dance? You pay 70 Euros to get in and not dance or an additional fee to actually be allowed to dance... away from the ACTUAL dancefloor?

That just sounds completely nonsensical to me. Not to mention the absolute antithesis of what genuine 'inclusive' clubbing ethos is meant to be - in my own mind at least.

I know a lot of nights are getting busy in Ibiza and there can be a fine line between an unforgettably electric atmosphere in a busy club and a night ruined by an absolute 'cattle-market'... but VIP just make a night bearable? Someone is getting f*cked in the wallet here?

:lol::lol: Wet myself reading this.

Thanks for the compliments all.

Anyway, I completely agree with the above comments regarding Pacha, at least as it applies to Guetta's night which is massively popular (and I predict will apply to Tiesto's night once late July/Aug rolls around). It absolutely sucks that you have to do this to get any amount of room to dance. But as you guys know, the main floor is just ridiculous on full nights, which is not helped by the fact that the VIP section is larger than the main dance floor. I can sit here and get angry at them all I want, but this is the current reality unfortunately. At my tender age of 37, I have been through enough sardine 'fests. I need some room to dance a little at least. My last Guetta night, while I had tons of fun (they were filming the Sexy Bitch video) BUT I spent with my arms jammed by my sides, pressed into 8 other people (guys) around me. Beyond ridiculous. And it took a lot to overcome the negative feelings that would wash over me every now and then as people pushed and bumped. I love being in a crowd, in the middle of the dance floor, experiencing the music... but at a certain critical mass, it interferes with the experience rather than becomes part of it (as in if you can't move, or are constantly being bumped). As I said, it worked out for us because admission by itself for 2 guys is somewhere around 140e.. plus then tack on 20e drinks. For the added room and ability to sit, it was worth it. One other benefit is that I did not run into any 'overly drunk english boys' that try to do that hopping dance, knocking over everyone around them, taking up 3 square meters of dance floor in a packed club. (This happened 2 other nights, inconsiderate idiots) It also helped that we were surrounded by genuinely nice people, making for a very fun night. Had we been next to those cocky Arab douches, my experience may have been different.

Anyway, I really think that's the reality of Pacha on super busy nights.

In fairness, mate, fairplay to yourself for appreciating the situation and doing what needed to be done to make the night a success for yourself. I've no doubt that for your VIP dollar you got plenty worth seeing/having.

I just worry about the mindset of the people that are paying 70 Euros to be a regular punter on the dancefloor. Do they realise it's going to be that busy before they go? Do they mind not being able to dance? Does the kudos of saying you were there outweight all the discomfort of fighting your way to the toilets, waiting hours at the bar and almost being squashed to death? Are these people all young 'clubbing noobs' or are there seasoned clubbers doing this?

Maybe it's out of order me even commenting on something like this having never been to FMIF. I dunno - this almost sounds like killing the goose that laid the golden egg but, bizzarely, this goose is somehow still alive and doing very well for itself.

Yea, agreed with everything you said. That's why I thought ppl should be posting up reviews of (especially) Pacha, from the main dance floor, so that people know what they are in store for. This mostly holds true on FMIF and other mega popular nights, since at a certain volume of people, it just becomes ridiculous. Im pretty sure the relatively new clubber that has never been there has no clue what a sardine 'fest it becomes in there.. especially if they saw the bigger clubs first. And therefore, I think, they are being screwed out of their 50-70 euro entrance fee.

Must admit I'm not a fan of FMIF at all - but enjoyed the little funky room upstairs a couple of years ago and had a good time. Not been back to Pacha since. Was no way worth the entry fee or drinks prices tho' .. lasted about 3 minutes on two separate occasions in the main room before deciding it was time to ship upstairs or ship out - couldn't stand the music or the crowding !

oh go on!!:p:p:p

+1 :D;)

when i went to Ibiza a few years back my main suitcase showed up a day late.... so we headed down to the airport to pick it up after they called. Got there around 6pm and found out the baggage area where my bag was stored was closed for siesta!!! had to wait around for a stupid hour to get my bags! :spank:

i get places takes siestas but i'd say an airport baggage claim is one that shouldn't
