approx 2yrs ago, i decided "broaden" my musical taste/collection and explore the realms of drum'n bass!! beleiving that u should start at the beginning i decided to go for a couple of "corner stone" purchases, i bought ltj bukem-progressions 1, roni size-reprazent & goldie-timeless..the collection has been steadily growing.

i now want to do the same with hip-hop, so i have today bought nwa-straight outta compton.....the question is what else??

I'm not into hip-hop, but my old mate was.....He was always ranting on about nwa, so you should download some nwa tracks, then buy the ones you like :)

Or maybe find a hip-hop forum and check the music section, they will have piles of new/decent tracks listed! :)

(good luck with the hip-hop ;) )

two of my personal favs are both Public Enemy - It takes a nation.... and Fear of a Black Planet..... Hip Hop like it used to be.....

You cannot go wrong with these two albums imo, every record collection should have em!

Guru - Jazzmatazz (album)
Anything by The SugarHill Gang
Planet Rock - Afrika Bambataa
Digital Underground - Sex Packets (quality album)
Eric B & Rakim - I know You Got Soul
Stetasonic - Talkin All That Jazz
Gang Starr - Just To Get A rep
Kurtis Blow - The Breaks
Jurassic Five - Jayou

all good stuff - none of the 'gangster' s*hit they listen to now.

i concur with the guru jazzmatazz choice.

i saw him in concert with donald byrd about 10 years ago. we were, aparently, the 'flyest' audience he'd ever had!

Bah !!! How could I have forgotten Digital Underground, brings back memories of going to a great hip hop/reggae/ragga club in Newcastle......... Happy days!!!

tcq - low end theory

simply for its jazzy content and presence of ron carter on bass

try to sample jazz (we got)

Personally, one of my favorites are (note that everyone's first album is always best!):

Jay-z - In My Lifetime...

Notorius B.I.G. - Ready to Die

Nas - Illmatic (this is an absolute classic and a must have for education about hip hop in its current state!)

i've just dipped into my record box and come up with this classic
B000005H2H.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

it's difficult to get hold of now but worth the effort. It combines the best of jazz remixed by hip hoppers and the reworking of donald byrd's kofi is superb!

Sounds like a good gig Stephen - Donald Byrd is a legend.

i can say with some certainty that the wife and i were the only middle-aged couple there that evening!

krs one's early stuff
anything by tribe called quest
anything by tupac
biggie-juicy and life after death
de la soul 3 feet high and rising
nas-illmatic
dre-the chronic
snopo dogg-doggy style

:P

Completely unrelated to Hip Hop but can really recommend anything to do with The Buena Vista Social Club for anyone who likes a bit of cuban style jazz.

Ruben Gonzalez et al for some good summer music.
