It's a total mess, Rob.
The mayor of the city, Yury Luzhkov, has repeatedly deinied requests by gay activitists to hold a Pride parade in Moscow.
Last year, the organizers tried to hold a demonstration anyway, but they were outnumbered and attacked by an odd combination of old lady fundamentalists Orthodox believers and young nationalist skinhead types
This year, the mayor's office denied the march request again and even called them "satanic" in some speech a couple of months ago.
This weekend, the organizers tried to deliver a petition to the mayor's office (about 1.5 km from my apartment!). As far as I understand, this was not the Pride march itself. Once again, nationalists and Orthodox psychos were waiting for them and the police didn't do much to keep them apart so a lot of activists got beaten up and hit with eggs and stones

Then the police arrested about 20 of the activists. I heard that Fairbrass was among the arrested. Other people in attendance included the group tATu, some European parliament people and at least one prominent Russian MP (who, strangely enough, is from a somewhat nationalist party but one that is no associated with the skinhead types)
I haven't read it yet but the Moscow Times should have good coverage. Here's the link:
