[/FONT]Spain's government said yesterday it had ordered an investigation into how the country was soaking up a quarter of one of the world's largest denomination bank notes, the €500 (£345) bill.

The €500 notes are popularly known in Spain as "Bin Ladens" because like the al-Qaida leader, everybody knows they are around but hardly anyone has seen them.

With tax officials and the Bank of Spain unable to explain where all the notes were going to, the country's ample black market and many money-launderers became the chief suspects.

I've seen some of those.

But I don't understand a word of this article

I was studying in Ireland in 2003 and when I received my apartment deposit from the landlord after my studies were over, I was given a 500 Euro note. It's a VERY large bill - it didn't even fit into my wallet! I had to fold it in half so it would fit.

The bill itself has a very strange appearance. I'm sure those involved in the bulk drug trade have taken most of the bills, as they are a very large denomination and easier to transport in large quantities then 50 or 100 Euro notes.

25% of these €500 notes are missing, thought to be in Spain.

Drug dealers have probably got most of them.

I was given one of these notes in 2004 by Travelex on the way to Ibiza.

Held on to it until we visited Pacha Restaurant then used it when the bill came. ;)

Schmooooooooth

I had a couple of them once... They are IMPOSSIBLE to change back to sterling as they "apparently" take 6 weeks to verify...

Six weeks to verify a bill? 8O

I would recommend everyone to not accept any or if you have no option go into the first bank and ask for smaller bills. They are impossible to change, sometimes there's problem with the 100€, with the 500€ it's impossible ;)

... and definitely don't take one to the Netherlands... it's hard enough to change a 50€ there much less a 100€
