Marco Carola Summer 2015

I ended up at music on sat morning for a bit (we arrived at 8am or so). you all know I'm not the biggest fan of carola these days; I loved him years ago when he played proper techno though. so believe it or not it was my first visit to music on all summer...and the last one too. the stuff he played simply bored me to tears. dull, dull, dull. each to his own though and I know I must be in minority seeing how popular his night is, but I just don't get it.

I think you seem to have very similar taste to me, Stivi! Although Carola did kill it on the Space Terrazza last Tuesday (playing a more upbeat, tech house set than usual), generally speaking I've never really understood the huge amount of hype around him. Although I do understand he is a fantastic DJ and I have seen him a few times, I don't feel he is the most exciting artist or performer I've ever seen. Certainly during my week in Ibiza last week, I would sooner take the opportunity to see someone like Solomun.

IMO feel that Cocoon @ Amnesia on a good night will never be beaten. Sven Vath is the main that NEVER disappoints in my book and will always be the far superior DJ and performer.

I agree that Cocoon is probably tops in terms of music and vibe overall still even with Solomun+1 making a strong push these days. However I disagree that any single dj will never disappoint. I've come to terms with this these days as in my experience at least i find even your favorites can go through slumps. For me, this occurred early summer with Adam Beyer as he was playing a lot of more groovy/tech house type sets and for me it just didnt work.

For me the hype around Carola, is that you almost never get the same thing from him which is what is great. I saw him 3 times last winter in Nyc at the same club and he played 3 completely different types of sets all 4 hours plus. Not only were they different they were pretty strong in both mixing and selection which is what makes him always worth seeing in my opinion at least.

I don't quite get the definition of Music On as an underground techno party considering the kind of sets that he plays, for me techno is the pulsing rhythmic stuff that adam beyer, capriati, alan fitzpatrick, ben klock, marcell dettmann etc play. Where as the stuff Carola plays always sounds almost quite housey?? (Excuse my ignorance here.) Tempted to check Music On out next year just for atmosphere purposes.

Just realised above is slightly retarded in arguing about definitions of techno - just confuses me in the underground sense....

A good way to start to start a fight is get a room full of hipsters to clarify the definition of techno... haha!

I know a few people who are bemused that Drumcode's sound be labelled techno. I don't think you're ever gonna find 2 ppl who completely agree.

Just compare the Berlin sound with classic Detroit techno. It's a world away!

Carola plays across the board imo. Especially at Music On he will start housier and then get heavier as the night progresses.

Seen him twice in recent weeks, and although it's hard to judge on 1.5hr festival sets (particularly Brit festivals with their noise limitations) I would be inclined to argue his sound has softened in the past 18 months.

Not been to Music On Ibiza since July last year, so unable to comment.

if carola is not underground techno for you then you can simply pass by the main room.. youll find what you want.

as my friends says carola's music is a trippy one and based on what recreations you use you will listen to it as a different music.

Thing is I genuinely like his stuff, it is just the definition that confused me, maybe I am just being an annoying internet pedant! Really want to check out Music On when I go next year as the vibe does look amazing, overcrowding does concern me slightly. I was over in Ibiza in June this year and we had no problems anywhere we went.

I really like his (and the Music On) sound and think he's one of the best DJs.

Nevertheless it's hard for me to support him and "Music On" as he is far away from the values of the electronic (underground) music scene.
His overbearing appearance and his way of handling the crowd are no-gos. The most crazy thing for me was the "Music On" party in London - the regular entrance fee was 105€ (!!!).

It's all about the music? No... it's all about the money...

My opinion.

Yes, eye-watering money. And yet the masses decided to part with their hard-earned. More fool them.

I loved music on both times this summer...the only thing I didn't love was literally pouring out sweat like a faucet and being forced to buy 9 waters so I didn't die of heat exhaustion, and I'm not kidding, I thought it was a real possibility
