Manumission's Ibiza Rocks opening (July 22): Maximo Park (live), Fischerspooner (live), Zane Lowe, Paul Epworth

Live music and Ibiza go back a long way. Rather further than modern day Manumission’s penchant for cherry picking the boldest and preferably least ponderous of the current crop of song-based artists.

Various members of Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley & the Wailers (;) ), the Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground and even Judas Priest have either played, passed through or even passed away on the White Isle.

Ibiza today is a globally significant tourist draw, but do bands still matter to the swarms of ravenous music fans who descend like hedonistic locusts every summer?

Manumission’s Andy McKay (below right, standing with Zane Lowe) would think so. At the conclusion of the set by the Pete Doherty-"led" Baby shambles on July 4, the ex-pat Mancunian was clearly elated and spinning the story like Alistair Campbell at a post-match press conference.

“It shows that this kind of music can work in Ibiza,” he told assembled media personnel who had witnessed for themselves the messy opening party mosh fest.

We didn’t see Mr McKay after the performance of Maximo Park (below) at the opening of their spin off party Ibiza Rocks but he must surely have been satisfied with their impassioned performance, and that of house band Fischerspooner.

We feel compelled to mention the layout and stage presentation at the Music Box could be improved to engage people further back while the bands are on.

Not that inducing a delirious crowd reaction was a concern for Radio One jock Zane Lowe in the newly elevated dj booth, who spun hits both old and new before and after the Newcastle quintet. It looked like a lost scene in the video for House of Pain’s ‘Jump Around.’

The Radio One star is in possession of mad skills and blended the unblendable without resorting to “dance” remixes or techno-trickery. A beat-matching anorak might have muttered darkly under his breath but no-one in the first ten rows would have heard them over the screaming.

Lowe introduced Paul Epworth, producer of choice for both Bloc Party and the Futureheads (both the latter and Paul are appearing alongside Goldfrapp and Faithless on a quite simply staggering August 12 line up), and we are reliably informed the pair did it good and proper till dawn.

Lowe’s high point:

Zane’s enthusiasm and seemingly genuine desire to bring relevant and exciting popular culture to the proceedings, that being the Ibiza club scene 2005.

Lowe’s low point:

Zane getting a little carried away and proclaiming that “This is the first time anybody’s ever played this track in a club in Ibiza!” and putting on Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, a big tune in Colin Peters’ dawn Coco Loco sets at least as far back as four years ago, if not by some other bold soul even before that.

This Friday (July 29) there’s Anu Pilai from Freeform Five, John Kennedy and the very Rev. Milo Speedwagon. Here’s an opinion on the last of those three lifted from www.futurefmradio.co.uk

“Kiss 100’s finest beret-sporting, perma red sock donning, turntable fiddler never plays the same set twice, always squeezing out a tailored selection for the occasion or just moving on. This, after all, is the character who has evolved from supporting soul legend Edwin Starr – to teaching sex goddess Helena Christensen how to mix. Well, put records on anyhow.

"Rev also managed to compile a critically acclaimed compilation for Groovetech with the milesahead crew. This comp. featured blissful electronica to swaggering punk funk and was the ideal addition to the milesahead Incontinental radio show which ran for the first 18 months of Groovetech’s life.

"Ah, but what of his music you cry? OK, well, If you’re looking for a smooth, seamless and stylistically beige journey across the house nation you’ll be disappointed. Likewise, if it’s head-nodding, rectum chasing, blokes-only tedium which flicks your switch you’ll again be left in the dark. However, if you’re prepared to free your mind and hug that dancefloor (yeah that one over there) then the guy who, without exception, is the only chap to use the word mega without you wanting to clock him is your man: electronic body music, punk disco, acid house music without a home, electro-pop and any other leftfield oddity is his ticket.

"Need some more clues? Well, he’s played alongside the likes of Andy Weatherall, Richard Fearless, Xfm’s Lauren Laverne and Erol Alkan; he’s also proud of warming up for Gonzales and Roots Manuva at his Shoreditch residency Mishmash. You might have heard him play at Bugged Out!, Homelands, V Festival, Fesh, Herbalism, NoWave (RIP) or any Sunday Best event. One more thing: He’s got the best show on London’s Kiss 100 – guests have included Miss Kittin, The Scissor Sisters, Air and Goldfrapp – the two year old show features Milo’s eclectic selection mixed live and features vaguely themed sets on various idiums depending on what tickles his fancy that week. Radio Speedwagon is an institution to many and has a loyal listernership via its archive.”

Great review, Dr. Mick! 8) Well I don't have that much to add, I think it's a sublime concept that could carry Privilege to a whole new level (so well done Manumission family!) but like you already said, they might as well have put slightly more effort into the whole thing (i.e. decoration of the music box etc). And then why Zane Lowe? IMO he is so not Ibiza at all and, frankly, the dullest presenter that MTV UK has to offer. I love MTV 2 but always have to switch channels when he's on. If I want a sleeping pill I might as well turn on "Magic". And claro as hardly anyone outside the Uk knows Zane Lowe the crowd was yet again almost exclusively British (don't misunderstand me, I love the Brits, but I simply prefer an international mix on an international island).
Still I had a rockin' great time, loved the music (in contrary to most of my friends who work in RRPP for Manu thus had to be there to get paid but aren't into Rock at all) and danced my a** off so I'd say it was a good start into a new fiesta that might even become a spectacular one. Can so not wait for Goldfrapp on August 12th :D

Glad you enjoyed the review Mr Uptown. :D

Re: Brits, Zane's soporific characteristics etc, all good points m8.

I'm currently chasing Mr Lowe's people now for an interview. If I succeed I'll put to him that's he's "dull".

That should get an interesting reaction.

Does anybody else have any impertinent questions and/or speculations about sexual proclivities?

how much of the club is open for this?

Just the Music Box and the Coco Loco. It's quite a manageable size.

They had a screen in the Coco Loco showing the band action in the next room.

the plaza de toros was in ibiza town!!

happy reading:

It was the 20th anniversary yesterday of the death of the legendary singer and composer Bob Marley, who died from cancer during his prime at the tender age of 36 years old.

Along with his group "The Wailers" Marley through his short life became one of the most popular and influential reggae musicians, who over a two-decade period has inspired many people and gave the world brilliant and evocative music which will always remain timeless and universal.

I will never forget being at the Bob Marley and The Wailers concert, which was held here on the island in the old Bullring in Ibiza town on a hot summer night in July 1978. The admission ticket was one price only of 1000 pesetas  . The band was scheduled to begin their live performance at around 8 o'clock in the evening but were late in arriving at the venue and they didn't appear on stage until gone 10 o'clock that night.

During the two-hour wait for the concert to begin the whole of the newly released album at the time Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy was continuously played throughout 8) . The stage was built high at one end of the Bullring and as the bright summer evening gradually turned to night hundreds of hippies and rastafarians with their children was dancing in the middle of the Bullring. The majority of the full house was wearing green luminous bangles and necklaces, which were being sold for 100 pesetas each as you entered the stadium :p .

I'm sure you can imagine the psychedelic scene where the warm summer air, which was saturated with the smell of marijuana on that colourful and wonderful night as The Wailers eventually appeared on stage  . That year of 1978 Bob Marley And The Wailers had released Kaya, which was number four in the UK charts the week of its release. Kaya was an album of love songs and homage to the power of ganja, which Marley the "Rasta Prophet" often refereed to as his "wisdomweed."

There was no Café del, Mar during those days of 1978, which didn't open until the summer of 1980. However, Es Paradis Terrenal had been opened since the summer of 1974 and during its hey day was without doubt the number one open air discothèque in the whole universe :!: .

The most popular music bar in San Antonio during 1978 was Utopia, which could then be found at the top of the same Calle as the now still famous Tapas Bar, Rincon de Pepe. Utopia was run by Miguel Cano and on the night of the Bob Marley And The Wailers concert his bar like most that night was closed, simply because, everybody wanted to go along and witness one of the most charismatic and challenging performers of our time live in the old Bullring.

The old Bullring in Ibiza town was situated opposite the Hotel Royal Plaza, which was not there at the time and only built in 1980 when the old Bullring was demolished and a single storey shopping centre was built and for whatever reason has never been used to this day  .

Termination: Bob Marley was born in Santa Anna, to the north of the island of Jamaica on February 6th 1945 and he died in a Miami Hospital on 11th May 1981. On Thursday 23rd May 1981, the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley was given an official funeral by the people of Jamaica. Following the funeral service, Bob's body was taken to his birthplace where it now rests in a mausoleum and his legend as a visionary and a revolutionary artist will always live on forever. Amen.
