Manumission's Ibiza Rocks opening (July 22): Maximo Park (live), Fischerspooner (live), Zane Lowe, Paul Epworth
Live music and Ibiza go back a long way. Rather further than modern day Manumission’s penchant for cherry picking the boldest and preferably least ponderous of the current crop of song-based artists.
Various members of Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley & the Wailers ( ), the Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground and even Judas Priest have either played, passed through or even passed away on the White Isle.
Ibiza today is a globally significant tourist draw, but do bands still matter to the swarms of ravenous music fans who descend like hedonistic locusts every summer?
Manumission’s Andy McKay (below right, standing with Zane Lowe) would think so. At the conclusion of the set by the Pete Doherty-"led" Baby shambles on July 4, the ex-pat Mancunian was clearly elated and spinning the story like Alistair Campbell at a post-match press conference.
“It shows that this kind of music can work in Ibiza,” he told assembled media personnel who had witnessed for themselves the messy opening party mosh fest.

We didn’t see Mr McKay after the performance of Maximo Park (below) at the opening of their spin off party Ibiza Rocks but he must surely have been satisfied with their impassioned performance, and that of house band Fischerspooner.

We feel compelled to mention the layout and stage presentation at the Music Box could be improved to engage people further back while the bands are on.
Not that inducing a delirious crowd reaction was a concern for Radio One jock Zane Lowe in the newly elevated dj booth, who spun hits both old and new before and after the Newcastle quintet. It looked like a lost scene in the video for House of Pain’s ‘Jump Around.’

The Radio One star is in possession of mad skills and blended the unblendable without resorting to “dance” remixes or techno-trickery. A beat-matching anorak might have muttered darkly under his breath but no-one in the first ten rows would have heard them over the screaming.
Zane Lowe at Ibiza Rocks opening @ Privilege - July 22, 2005
Lowe introduced Paul Epworth, producer of choice for both Bloc Party and the Futureheads (both the latter and Paul are appearing alongside Goldfrapp and Faithless on a quite simply staggering August 12 line up), and we are reliably informed the pair did it good and proper till dawn.

Lowe’s high point:
Zane’s enthusiasm and seemingly genuine desire to bring relevant and exciting popular culture to the proceedings, that being the Ibiza club scene 2005.
Lowe’s low point:
Zane getting a little carried away and proclaiming that “This is the first time anybody’s ever played this track in a club in Ibiza!” and putting on Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, a big tune in Colin Peters’ dawn Coco Loco sets at least as far back as four years ago, if not by some other bold soul even before that.

This Friday (July 29) there’s Anu Pilai from Freeform Five, John Kennedy and the very Rev. Milo Speedwagon. Here’s an opinion on the last of those three lifted from www.futurefmradio.co.uk
“Kiss 100’s finest beret-sporting, perma red sock donning, turntable fiddler never plays the same set twice, always squeezing out a tailored selection for the occasion or just moving on. This, after all, is the character who has evolved from supporting soul legend Edwin Starr – to teaching sex goddess Helena Christensen how to mix. Well, put records on anyhow.
"Rev also managed to compile a critically acclaimed compilation for Groovetech with the milesahead crew. This comp. featured blissful electronica to swaggering punk funk and was the ideal addition to the milesahead Incontinental radio show which ran for the first 18 months of Groovetech’s life.
"Ah, but what of his music you cry? OK, well, If you’re looking for a smooth, seamless and stylistically beige journey across the house nation you’ll be disappointed. Likewise, if it’s head-nodding, rectum chasing, blokes-only tedium which flicks your switch you’ll again be left in the dark. However, if you’re prepared to free your mind and hug that dancefloor (yeah that one over there) then the guy who, without exception, is the only chap to use the word mega without you wanting to clock him is your man: electronic body music, punk disco, acid house music without a home, electro-pop and any other leftfield oddity is his ticket.
"Need some more clues? Well, he’s played alongside the likes of Andy Weatherall, Richard Fearless, Xfm’s Lauren Laverne and Erol Alkan; he’s also proud of warming up for Gonzales and Roots Manuva at his Shoreditch residency Mishmash. You might have heard him play at Bugged Out!, Homelands, V Festival, Fesh, Herbalism, NoWave (RIP) or any Sunday Best event. One more thing: He’s got the best show on London’s Kiss 100 – guests have included Miss Kittin, The Scissor Sisters, Air and Goldfrapp – the two year old show features Milo’s eclectic selection mixed live and features vaguely themed sets on various idiums depending on what tickles his fancy that week. Radio Speedwagon is an institution to many and has a loyal listernership via its archive.”
