Apologies for an English message but doing a cheapo from Bristol early December on easyjet - silly money like £14.49 out and £9.49 back - any good reasonable restaurants around Gran Via / Plaza Mayor apart from the El Botin?

I'm from Madrid, but I can't suggest you any restaurant because I don't know a lot of them... Maybe you can try to go around Toledo Street, Fuencarral Street or San Bernando Street and trust on your intuition!!! You also can probe the famous "bocata de calamares" (squid sandwich??) at Botoneras Street (beside of Main Square)...

Anyway, do you know Burguer King or McDonnals?

Tony, you can also visit http://www.softdoc.es/guia_madrid/comer/tapas/tapas_latina.html, and find a lot of bars... (sorry, it's in Spanish ) or http://www.softdoc.es/madrid_guide/eatingout/eatingout.html (it's in English ). In Madrid it's very typical to go tapping (ir de tapas). It consists of having a beer and eat "tapas".
