Weather warning issued by the Met Office - bring it on
EARLY WARNING of Heavy Snow
Issued by the Met Office on Thursday, 18 November 2004.
OVERALL RISK ASSESSMENT: The probability of disruption due to severe weather conditions in part of the United Kingdom within the next 36 hours is 50 percent.
REGIONAL RISK ASSESSMENT for the occurrence of severe weather conditions between 12:00 on Thursday 18 November 2004 and 21:00 on Friday 19 November 2004.
NORTHERN SCOTLAND 40% Percent
EASTERN SCOTLAND 40% Percent
NORTH WEST ENGLAND 40% Percent
NORTH EAST ENGLAND 40% Percent
THE MIDLANDS 30% Percent
All Other Regions Less Than 20%
The Met Office is expecting a cold northerly flow to become established over the north and east of the UK. Frequent snow showers over the northeastern half of Scotland will lead to 5-10cm of snow locally in exposed areas with possibly 10-15cm in the Northern Isles. Some drifting is likely and disruption to transport is expected.
In addition, there is also a risk of rain turning to snow for a time tonight across parts of Northern England and the Midlands (more especially over the Pennines and Peak District), as a deepening depression moves east across the southern half of the UK. A few cm of snow may accumulate over the higher hills, with some temporary slushy deposits on the lower level routes. The main concern for transport will occur tomorrow morning, Friday 19 November, as skies clear and surfaces become icy. The risk assessments for areas of England quoted above mainly relate to the potential disruption from ice.
