Spoke with my dad over the weekend and it turns out that my mum had a couple of policies going, which in the event of her sad passing are to be paid out, Now my dad wants to divvy these up bewteen me & my brother, however as my mum had no will drawn up, he now has to get a "letter of probate". which If my memory serves me well, allows my dad to do this. Can anyone be more specific? :?

That's correct. When my grandpa passed away last year, my Dad became the executor of the will so once the letter of probate was sorted it enabled him to sell his property, shares and close accounts so the money could be split between everyone named in the will.

The letter of probate basically proves that your Dad can be the executor so as to carry this out.
