jellyfish!

hi all

Last year, in August and September, I was daft enough to get stung twice by the small purple jellyfish minding their own business around the rocks at Cala Gracio, north of San Antonio. It hurt!!!!! They are not very easy to see so I got quite paranoid after that and swam off the high rocks some distance past Mambo where I could scan the water before getting in and make sure there weren't any lurking!

Does anybody know anything of the habits of the jellyfish - like whether they gather in particular places, whether their habits are affected by sea temperature, do they swim close to shore at certain times, are there any quiet beaches where they are rarely seen?? etc etc etc. I don't want to be stung again! I'm going to be in Ibiza at the end of July/beginning of August.

thanks :)

Are jellyfish medusas in spanish?
I think that jellyfish appear where they want , I very scared of them, There is a cream to put if you are beaten by them. I do not think you can control where they are, they move around. So sometimes you hear don't go to this beach is full of them untill they go away.

Just checked my Spanish/English dictionary, mikkak, and yes, they are medusas, although I didn't know that until you said!

I was wondering if they are maybe more likely to be in certain bays or areas or something? Or are they just everywhere?

Thanks for telling me about the cream. If I get stung again at least I know I can go and buy the cream! Ouch!

I have caught literally hundreds in a kids fishing net in a day - I have seen them in the water at every beach around the island and there were loads in May around cala san vicente. In July I have seen swarms at Cala Vadella, Salinas, Portinatx, Es Cana, Cala Llonga and San An bay. They are usually only a couple of inches in diametre and very difficult to see unless looking for them.
Just keep your eyes open and I have been advised to keep a bottle of vinegar handy

Yes, they are difficult to see unless you are above them!!! From your description it looks as though I shall just have to be careful about checking the water before leaping in! :(

thanks

there were loads of the buggers at es cana last year, stung 3 times on the hand :x all the locals speared the fookers to death :D

I'm sort of glad to hear that you got stung too! Sorry!!! I just mean that at least it wasn't just me being a jellyfish magnet! I saw so many people diving off the rocks and generally swimming about with no trouble at all at Cala Gracio and I wondered how the hell they escaped being stung. I was just unlucky :(

The funny thing was that the second time I got stung was on my wrist. I had a bit of trouble explaining the resulting very visible raw rash at work.....because I had zoomed off to Ibiza for the weekend closing parties without telling anybody and had rung in sick from San Antonio on Monday morning!!! I crawled into work on Tuesday morning after flying back to Gatwick in the early hours and getting the train back home to arrive just in time to get to work - looking really haggard as you can imagine!!! :D

This might sound gross but if you get stung then urine will help kill any bacteria and reduce the stinging. fyi, just in case you don't have anything else handy...

this is slightly wrong. jelly fish stings are alkaline, you neutralise the sting using an acid, vinegar, lemon juice or urine. nothing to do with bacteria.

my girlfriend got stung off san miguel. we went to es canar for the day and there was a constant streeam of people heading o the lifeguard after being stung.

some hippy bloke said the abundance of them off the island last year was irregualr and something to do with their mating habits and the corresponding full moon during late august.

Dang, I guess my friend just really wanted to piss on my leg for kicks. No wonder he was laughing while doing it...it did take the sting away though. ;)
