Isn't it time Ibiza was open in winter?

No idea what flights are available from other countries, but from northern England there's next to nothing, unless you want to fly to Madrid/Barcelona/Palma and make your way from there. I note some hotels are open, most appear to be closed.

Yet the weather is mild, and Majorca (a touch further north) is virtually fully open for business.

If the airlines (Jet2, Easyjet etc) are reluctant to put on flights (Jet2 stops in October )
can't the local government and the hoteliers organise winter flights using Spanish airlines from Northern Europe? I thought Spain in general and Ibiza in particular wanted foreign cash to pay off their debts a little?

Between now and April I have 6 days holiday to use up, and unless I want to get to Ibiza the long way, which is expensive and time consuming, it looks like I'll be off to another country (Portugal?) which is more open.

Ibiza, sort it :spank:!!

Yes I like at the end of the article the disclaimer

I dont know. People dont like change.

Ibiza for the last 50 years has adapted quiet well to the 5 months of hard work and 7 months of taking it easy system. It works for them and maybe they dont want to change.

Less is More is a phrase best associated with Ibiza and for me personally I am quiet happy with the way it works at the moment.

Quite interesting...
Very interesting. I'm sure that if these flights were subsidised by the local government, then they would get their money back and some by the amount spent by the visitors on the island.
Let's face it, January/February is hardly beach weather, so visitors would be likely to be out and about using the buses, hiring cars etc, visiting the little villages, lingering over meals, shopping and so on.
I'd certainly spend more on a winter day than summer, simply because spending all day on a beach (in summer) with your own picnic using a left-over parasol isn't helping the economy much!
There might be the question that locals enjoy the off-season (peace and quiet and all that) but having no-one there might be idyllic, but it isn't filling anyone's pockets.
C'mon Ibiza, get your act together.

it'll take decades for ibiza to develop a proper winter tourist economy but that doesn't mean the steps can't be made to make that happen now.

the direct flights are essential obviously.

During winter though what is there to do in Ibiza that you couldn't get somewhere else in Spain / Portugal say?

nothing. but then for 75% of the island's visitors that's exactly the same as summer?

Majorca is not what it used to be years ago.A lot of hotels now close for the winter months. But at least its still open. But the big holiday campanies stop going end of oct.Demand is not big enough like it used to be.I remember when people used to go for 3 months at a time and more. They handed in there pension boooks and got pocket money each week. All change now.
I have always said if fiesta hotel group just open a few hotels in pdb for a start and see how it goes.I know its not like benidorm. But you never know till you try.
If the hotel group and a few airline companys got together they could make it work.Dreams thats all it might be.

i'm quite happy that Ibiza is quiet during the winter as it means when i do go there in the winter time it has a a magical aura about it.. i think this would be ruined if the place was flooded with tourists all year round...

I havent been in the winter either but I think if I do it would ruin it having a proper winter destination feel to it. I would expect it be tranquil and soul filling not busy and full of open bars with folk getting wasted. That said I am only going off the impression I get from reading on places like here. I'd love to go in the future money permitting and see what its like without the madness. I expect a more local theme to the holiday lots of chilled out walks and peaceful evenings propping up the bar.
I'd much rather the music license being relaxed then the winter trade picking up.

Taken from a ddi article;

http://www.diariodeibiza.es/pitiuse...-perdida-15000-pasajeros-invierno/532504.html

In December 2010 Ibiza received 4,000 international passengers. This year only been 160.

30 airports connected to Mallorca
While you run out of connections Ibiza in winter, the PSOE-Pacte Mallorca says this winter will be linked with thirty international airports. Meanwhile, Menorca have at least a weekly connection with London.

The majority of those lost 4,000 visitors are likely to be from the lost Ryan Air flights?

Would be fascinating to know how much the takings of shops / cafes / etc are down for the same period...

you appear to be assuming that those 4000 passengers were people from london taking holidays in ibiza? the vital piece of information that appears not to have been made public (at least i've never seen it) is how many passengers on these ryanair flights were returns TO ibiza as opposed to FROM ibiza so that the subsidy by public funds could be justified.

That's a fair point, for detailed figures it would be easy to distil this information. If it were the case that the majority or a lot of the passengers were ex-pats visiting the uk wouldn't this information be made public to support dropping the subsidy?

On our winter flight last year I was sat next to a woman and her daughter who were returning to Ibiza from a visit to the UK. From a sample size of six that was four visitors and two returning ex-pats:lol:

spill the beans, what can you tell us??

That's odd:confused: I posted a link to an article which revealed it was British Airways who are upping their weekly schedule over the summer and are considering twice weekly flights from London City to Ibiza through the winter.
