Is this fair??

So I just found out, at my work, if you have children, you get an EXTRA 10 days of holiday per year!!!!

(Of course they don't call it holiday...... its 'children' time')

If I was a parent, then I'd think that was wonderful.

So because I'm single and child-less, that means essentially I have 2 weeks less a year than someone who has kids..

I do hope I have a family one day, so maybe my ideas will change, but right now I'm just being bitter because I want more holiday! ;)

So, should I go get myself pregnant just to have a little more time off??

Really though, parents... do you think this is fair?

Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

that would hack me off I have to admit - our company changed its benefits scheme last year - basically for the type of reasons that have upset you
All the benefits we are entitled to (including time off for child stuff etc.) can now be tailored to what you want from the company.

For instance - I dont have children, so I can choose to have extra money to supplement gym memberships, or add a family member to my private health care scheme, or have exta £'s paid into my Pension Scheme - that sort of thing....

All because several 1000 employees complained about how unfair it was if you have no kids.... get complaining!! ;)

i am not a parent so maybe a bit biased ... i feel really strongly about this having been on the receiveing end of this type of thing too

at the end of the day of course there are times where if you have children you need to be with them, emergencies etc but then it should come out of your normal holidays

i used to work with a girl who constantly took time off as her child was ill. i asked her why her partner couldnt help too, as it was one day a week she was off at least and her answer was "he cant as he is at work!" .... where is the logic in that!

on another similar note.......my boyfriend is well lucky, he has four "duvet days! " a year - if he doesnt want to come into work he can call up and just say im not coming in today 8O 8O
he is on one today!!!

I completely agree, if they can have another 2 weeks holiday to do kids stuff, why can't we have another 2 weeks holiday for 'me-time'

True, children do get sick, leave school early etc etc... but I like what puppylover has, if you don't have children, perhaps those days of leave could be used towards something else.

And, if I have children, I would probably think how nice it is that I have this 'children' leave

What if I'm so busy working and I have no time to go out on the prowl? Do you think I should ask for 'getting-ready-for-a-hot-date leave?

Then I could leave at noon to go shopping for a new pair of shoes, get my hair done, so the chances of my date turning into a full-on relationship, then being able to get married are so much higher.... then I too will be able to join the having children gang at work and get more holidays??

I think it seems very unfair. Holidays should be the same regardless of if you have a sprog or not.

I don't have kids, but my friends and colleagues who have had kids, i can see how much extra stress it has on them.

10 days is a lot, but i bet they won't be having as much fun as their un-sprogged colleagues, holidays are not the same when you have young kids.

Let them have it I say, as long as the extra workload isn't dished onto someone else. Bringing up kids well is good for us all in the longrun. But I think 10 days, as i said before, is excessive.

On the flip side, my missus was told at christmas that she had to work between xmas and new year because she was the only one who didn't have kids!8O

She told them quite simply that she wasn't coming in and to feel free to fire her for it, if they were prepared to justify it in a tribunal.

Needless to say they did fck all.

good on your missus

ive had that one thrown on me before... and those with kids get first pick of the hols, etc

the bottom line is that in the UK you don't get 10 days extra leave a year if you're a parent.

as a parent i see it two ways. 1) 10 extra days wouldn't be enough!, 2) sometimes coming to work is a welcome relief, for my own sanity, from the little terrors.

on a serious note, all these type of initiatives are part of the wider concern of rapidly declining birthrates in the western world as a result of the family unit vanishing. Reproducing is about the most natural thing humans are capable of, closely followed by self-preservation!, so the fact we're not doing is slightly concerning.:?

I agree. We not too good at the self preservation bit either!:?

i hardly think that with the choices we have these days that a few minutes of pleasure is worth years of hassle. i'd rather have no holidays than have kids.
