Is the police station open on saturdays - for NIE?

You don't need an nie number to open a bank account, just a passport and some cash. I opened one at Sa Nostra in Sta Eulalia a couple of weeks ago and it was really easy, I had a debit card, internet access and all my pin numbers in a couple of days. It made British banks look really archaic.

I opened a bank account at La Caixa a few weeks back and all you need is a passport and cash. It's pretty easy and most branches have an English speaking assistant. The website allows you to do a lot more than most UK banks and most of it can be accessed in "English" (sometimes you can tell it was translated and written by computer programmers...)
If you still want to get a NIE and fancy the opportunity to admire the beautiful gardens at the back of the police station
you seem to need far less than is suggested elsewhere on this site. I had two copies of my NIE form and two copies of the relevant bits of my passport and they gave me the copies back. However, they did take all the copies off my wife. What you don't seem to need is passport photographs. I found a downloadable copy of the NI here: http://www.idealspain.com/Pages/Information/MovingToSpain.htm and a translation which was quite useful.
