Is Ibiza becoming "Anti-Ibiza"?

I was reading an article over at Ibiza Voice about overcrowding at MTV/Snopp. As we all know sadly it is only a matter of time before somebody gets crushed at an event like this or in Pacha at an overcrowded Guetta / SHM night! We can debate this all night, but nothing will change until something god-awful happens! However, another thing that struck me in the Voice review of Snopp was the last line.

"Yeah the organisation is a shambles. There is obvious overcrowding here but to be fair it's their very first event and they are bound to have teething problems but this is a really different crowd. It's almost anti-Ibiza."

I get accused of being anti devise music when I talk about how much I believe this Usher/Snopp/Countless Other RnB Stars on the dance band-wagon are starting to ruin dance and the atmosphere of Ibiza. Does it attract a Ayia Napa type person, or have they always been in Ibiza, and I just need to get out more?

I hope I am proved wrong on this. But something is happening this year, and the vibe just feels different...

but perhaps there are lots of people who actually live on the island who would rather see snoop than the same house/techno etc that is on every night so that added to toursist = a very busy night. if its overcrowded yes that is promoters fault. but if people in ibiza want to go see something that isnt dance music and to call it anti ibiza is to set up a pre conception of an island based on tourist music trends. Im not arguing with u specifically i just think that it sounds like 'ibiza' is actually translated to just dance music and thats it, if u know what i mean

Different strokes for different folks. The island is plenty big enough for all comers, I can't really imagine a bit of R n' B (which I personally detest) making any difference to the atmosphere. I have encountered brrrrrraaappers island for years.

My girlfriend and I went to this night actually more so as Magda and Layo & Bushwacka were playing while thinking it might be fun to see something completely different in the Terrace...

My worst clubbing experience ever. We left 45 minutes after getting in, which took 2 hours in a queue - We had bought pre-sale tickets off this website but ended up having to fight past those people who were paying to get in. On the way out two girls told us of the hell in the main room where they saw one girl fainting.

As to the general point being made. This was my 5th time in Ibiza and I really only enjoyed 3 of the 6 nights we went to - Cocoon, Carl Cox and Defected. The others, MTV, Hed Kandi and Supermartxe were boring and felt like pure commercialism as compared to creating a fantastic clubbing experience. Supermartxe was especially a let down after hearing some good things about it.

The sunset strip was ruined for us by one of Mambo's members of staff trying to stop us going down onto the rocks with a drink. We always spend a lot of money in Mambo eating and drinking, but they didn't get a penny of us after being so rude. We ignored the guy and went on down to the rocks anyway and were quickly joined by tens of others.

Other San An favourites like Bay Bar were a bit of a let down as the staff seemed a little less enthusiastic or friendly (apart from one fantastic Irish girl). The club reps are still as much of a pain in the ass.

Still Ibiza - For all my moaning we did have a fantastic trip! :p Highlights were eating at Pacha restaurant, Sven on the Terrace and getting round Dalt Villa on an amazing day!

The whole Mambos thing takes the piss. It is a licence to print money but someone somewhere has got a little to greedy. I won't be back for a while.

Some bits get better, some bits get worse, but I love Ibiza and there really is no where like it

I've been to Ayia Napa this summer expecting it to be R'n'B types but it has totally changed.
Just general clubbing/chart music in most places.

I think the thing that makes Ibiza so great is that it can be so diverse and still attract massive crowds to all events.

The thing with an event like this is that they can fill the club to capacity but if everyone wants to see Snoop and all tried to fill the terrace it's hard to stop.

yeah i think it was ambitious to put him on in a small venue like amnesia considering the guy does stadiums. if it was tiesto id guess it would be a similar story

I think its a case of people getting older and music moving on with a younger generation.

When something starts to bore me in Ibiza I explore and look for something different from the Island. Talk to people in the know they will point you in the right direction.

Explore the countryside, go to places off the beaten track etc. For the past 15 years I have always found something new to do in Ibiza.

Ibiza is not all about the clubs and music. Its only scratching the surface.........

Good post.

Ibiza is a lot more than the commercial club scene. I'm gonna be checking out some of the lesser known stuff this year (Although a good messy big night always goes down well).

I think the reason that a lot of people don't like this situation is that the music these artists are bringing to the island is crap and aimed at younger teens. Ibiza Rocks brought diversity by selecting bands and artists that can sing and produce good material, maybe not to everyones taste but it had a market. Usher and Snoop Dogg? Snoop was good 17 years ago and Usher can't even sing and dance at the same time. Most of this new style of music, which I don't know what genre it is, is absolutely terrible and I really think a lot of people are being brainwashed by pretty lights, fancy shows, and superstar has beens. It seems like all this is taking over Ibiza and thats what people dislike, not musical diversity.

The only acts that look any good in the MTV lineup are Robyn, Mark Ronson and Duran Duran. Definitely non-has beens who are getting better with age. Mark did an amazing job producing Duran Duran's latest album; Robyn just kicks ass period. Check out Tong & Spoon remix of "With Every Heartbeat" and Roger Sanchez "Be Mine!" and you will hear quality.

I would say there is the 'Ibiza' crowd, and the 'Beefa' crowd.

Ibiza crowd is the more mature crowd. There to hear a great soundsytem and well produced house, trance and such, with a large crowd of like minded individuals. Just looking for a great atmosphere. Names of artists would probably not be heard of to the Beefa crowd.

Beefa crowd is the 18-20 year olds, who are attracted the the white island by the aura attached to it. As well as artists such as Snoop and Usher. Most nights will be spent in the west end, with a 'big night' to see Snoop. Woooo lolz. They may as well go to Malia, Napa, or zante. The sort who will look for a fight, be singing england football songs and trying to get on the worst looking women on the island. And then boast about they're Beefa holiday when they get back to the UK

I'm there this year for Coxxy, John Dahlback, Sasha, Above and Beyond and defected (If I can party on through all of them). I'm there to soak up the sun, the atmosphere and be around people who truly love their (decent) music. I just want to get away from the commercial **** you are bludgeoned with in any bar, club or radio station in London. The days will be spent in our villa by the pool, or on a nice beach somewhere. Plus, there's something about a woman who appreciates her music, and can dance to it. They're the women I have had the best and most civilised conversations with in a club setting.
