Ireland resurrect title hopes
24/02/2007 - 19:39:46
Ireland 43 England 13

Ireland resurrected their RBS 6 Nations title hopes with a crushing record victory over clueless England.

It was the first time an English team has played at Croke Park, the home of Gaelic sport, and they will not want to return in a hurry after suffering their biggest defeat to Ireland.

Girvan Dempsey, David Wallace, Shane Horgan and Isaac Boss crossed for the home side while Ronan O’Gara did the rest, finishing with a 21-point haul in an immaculate display of kicking.

England breached the whitewash through debutant David Strettle while Jonny Wilkinson kicked eight points but it was virtually all one-way traffic in a memorable night for Irish sport.

The first half was tale of woe for sorry England who, save for an early penalty from Wilkinson and run by Andy Farrell, made no headway.

They were forced to fight a desperate rearguard action and, when Danny Grewcock was sin-binned for impeding Peter Stringer in the 29th minute, Ireland pounced.
Dempsey was the first to cross, the grateful benefactor of instinctive work from Gordon D’Arcy and Brian O’Driscoll, and then Wallace burrowed his way over from close range.

Apart from an early kick from O’Gara, the opening of the second half belonged to England, who were rewarded when debutant David Strettle rode tackles from Dempsey and Gordon D’Arcy to cross.

Wilkinson’s boot reduced the deficit further but O’Gara added his fifth penalty and then set up Ireland’s third try for Shane Horgan, who collected a crossfield kick and touched down.

Boss then delivered the final blow, running in an intercept try amid crowd chants of “easy, easy”, and his fellow substitute Paddy Wallace converted.

Ireland’s triumph – the first at their temporary home while Lansdowne Road is redeveloped – was a welcome tonic after the heartbreaking 20-17 defeat by France.

It also nudged their title bid back on track with matches against Scotland and Italy to come.

Yeah, disappointed with today, last time we was there we murdered 'em.

:spank:  ;)

In fairness, we had no chance with that crowd, so we didn't. Atmosphere was probably up ther with Old Trafford.

Fair play to the paddys though.

(Oh, and Rugby's sh*t)

you haven't beaten us in Rugby now the last 5 times we've met:lol: and i bet you wouldn't be saying Rugby is sh*t if you would've won today eh;):D

A bad winner is never a good trait I find! Humility a word you've ever come across Jonny? I've just listened to the Ireland coach being interviewed on Five Live in the car on my way to work (whilst waiting for the football to come on as not a rugby fan whatsoever but each to their own) and HE said (nice bloke he sounded by the way) the score flattered Ireland and the sending off was a major factor. Is it all over then now have Ireland won the six nations then?

I see your point - I was quite enthusiastic about it for a day when we won the World Cup.;)

Yes it is mate, Celtic were humiliated against Artmedia Bratislava 2 years ago in the Champions League 5-08O and we've been humiliated in the Scottish Cup once or twice over the years against teams considered to be minnows, but how and ever no we haven't won the 6 nations France would still be favourites but it aint over just yet.;)

When you've won the Six Nations and the World Cup, then you'll have full bragging rights. Not before.

Is the current Irish team good enough to do either of those things this year? Well it lost to France, so I doubt it. Is it better than the current English team? On the evidence of Saturday's game, most definitely.

I don't agree with O'Sullivan that the score flattered the Irish; I think it was an accurate reflection of just how much better Ireland were in every department.

For me, the saddest thing about the England performance was the way our pack was pushed around and ultimately humiliated. I've got used over the years to watching English packs boss the opposition, even when the team as a whole is playing badly. If we can't do that, we haven't got much left.

I really, really hope Richard Hill comes back into the side for the World Cup. We need people with his experience and leadership skills.

I don't see why we shouldn't brag about it seen as you haven't beaten us now in 5 games is it, sure you won the World Cup that cant be denied but that was then, this is now eh.;)

This was a fantastic game. I have never watched an England team so on the back foot throughout the 80 mins.

Whenever you play England they always look as if they could sneak a win over you no matter how far in front you are but saturday they looked absolutely shapeless!

cracking game and performance by the Oirish.

Shame you ****ed up the Slam tho by switching off for a minute against the Frenchies

Best team won, simple as that and they deserved it on the day too.

Having spent the last year and a half in Ireland I was choked by the emotion during the Irish anthem.

Can't help but feel it was the right result for a lot of other reasons too....

Never thought I'd fee like that about an England team losing.
