This Friday the legends of 'Throb' will be heading to Babalou to play at the ever popular Deeper.
Steve Neal and Jnr J are well known for being fun loving party people and they will no doubt be bringing that positive vibe along with them to the Event!
I asked them a few questions to find out what's going on in the land of 'Throb' and also away from it.

So, tell those not in the know a bit about Throb. What are your roles and how did you guys meet?
Jnr: Throb is based upon a concept of Parties, not club nights. Which basically is clubbing without any of the pretentious Bollox that sometime come with it….can I say Bollox on here?!Anyway…if you strip back some of the elements of modern day clubbing ie; Guestlists, Music that’s cool rather than good & general ****yness…all your left with is a fantastic party! Ie Throb!
I first met one of the creators of Throb outside of the Telegraph in Brixton. I was on my way home from a gig and I saw him sitting out side with a few record boxes and other DJing equipment…I don’t know why but I stopped and offered him a lift home. After he realised I was trying to solicit my self to him we got chatting and I handed him a demo. A year later I got my first gig with them and met the other guys involved and we instantly hit it off. Since then I’ve played at some of the best parties in my career to date and have never looked back.
Steve: My role… hmm roles are a bit too defined for Thorb I Dj there and help run it which ranges from just about having a go at everything else at one point or another. As for meeting I reckon it will have been at one of the crews after parties whilst talking cod **** to strangers, hahaha….

So you are both Throb DJ’s, which is probably one on the longest running promotions in London why do you think the event has been so successful, besides you being the DJ’s of course - what is the secret behind it’s success?
It’s the whole policy that Throb are based on…first of all we do it for the party and not the money…all money made on a Throb night goes back in to Throb to make it bigger and badder. It’s also all about having fun at our parties rather than a group of Djs playing you what they think is trendy or what’s “it!”. Also we’re all a little crazy and come up with some insane idea’s to base our nights on.
Steve: Throb has basically evolved through time out of a birthday party has always encouraged people to get involved in various ways. This is what a lot of the friendly party vibe atmosphere owes a lot too.
You have both played for many different promotions in and around London, for both of you Throb and Jnrs Jamm are closest to your heart, do they attract similar crowds and what distinguishes them apart from other clubbers found around London?
Jnr: Throb and Jnr’s Jamm both have the same foundations the only real difference is the music. At Jnr’s Jamm the music is a bit more underground which in turn draws in a different type of crowd but they still get drawn in to the friendly atmosphere of it all and dance like no one is watching =)
Steve: Kinda yes the atmosphere is great at both nights but for slightly different reasons Throb never takes itself that seriously and this is reflected in the music whereas with JnrJamm there is a more focused sound. Throb distinguishes itself as it is all about the party and the themeing helps reinforce this, whereas with JnrsJamm its all about the music!

Jnr, seems you are out DJing practically every weekend and you both you have your own weekly radio shows. Do you ever just feel like it’s all way to much clubbing and parting and want to take some time off from it all and head away to a Desert Island for a while!?
Jnr: I’m just a Dj Shhlllaaaaaaaggg and I can’t get enough of it….I go abroad on average once a month…but that’s to DJ =S. I do plan to go to Australia at the end of the year for two months for a holiday…but I’m already in talks about playing whist over there. I LOVE IT!!!
Where would your ideal holiday location be, if you could go who would you go with and what one item would you not forget to take?
Jnr: First of all I would take my misses cause I f I didn’t she kick my arse all over the shop something horrid, so I suppose the misses and I would embark upon a journey to Japan for some intense Samurai training where we would be instructed by Hittori Hanzo him self then we’d return masters and could settle our arguments 14th century Japanes stylee. Either that or Majorca for a club 18 – 30s holiday.
Steve: My ideal holiday at the mo is I have Cuba in my sights, would love to go there. As for who well that would have to be my lady and as for item well the sensible thing is money as it will get you everything else but if that doesn’t count sunglasses!!
Aside from anything you are involved with, what is really doing it for you in the scene at the moment?
Jnr: I’m liking all the new talent that’s arising in the scene today, there are a lot of great new Dj’s and producer popping up all over the place doing weird and wonderful things. Its quite and exciting time for House music in general.
Steve: I am really enjoying the smaller nights friends nights rather than the big productions.

Have you both got a lot happening on the production side of things? What can we expect?

Steve: Jnr…. I am still getting my head around that side of things!
Jnr: I’ve started a label with my brother from another mother….and father, Kriss Darang called Devore Recordings PLUG PLUG PLUG. We’re just about to launch our third release and already are getting some great support from the peeps we look up to in the game. As for myself I’ve just completed a Logic production course at Subbass Academy where I was taught some bad boy skillz by the tutor Dan Cat from the Cheshire Catz, so I mostly sit at home making music and upsetting the neighbours.
I will always be a fan of BIG! Fat! Music so you expect to hear plenty of noisy stuff from me.
The stuff that I currently have out at the moment is:
KvJ – Twisted on Kinky Vynyl.
Cheshire Catz vs Jnr J Battlecat/Bastard Love Child on Fakt Recordings.
KvJ mix of Kid Dubs Freakz on Devore Recordings
The stuff that will be out very soon is:
Cheshire Catz vs Jnr J – Badd Ass African Drums on Devore recordings.
Martijn Ten Veldon’s – I Wish You Would – Jnr J rmx on Phonique
So go out and buy my stuff or I’ll send the misses round with her Hittori Hanzo Blade!
Away from house music what do you like to listen to at home when recovering from a hard weekend?

Jnr: Very sad but true…I only listen to house music nowadays and as for recovering…what’s that?
Steve: Hahahaha no music I vanish into TV land or Xbox, defo brain dead activities….

What has been your biggest influence in life and musically?
Jnr: My Family have always been there for me and supported me, my brother taught me to mix and my mum didn’t beat me when I left my well paid Motor Technicians job to follow a childish DJ dream…like she did when my cousin and I decided to give each other hair cuts when we were 9 =(.
Musically DJ Ez played and influential role in my early days and artists like Bob Marley and Ragga artist such as Spragga Benz and the early Scare Dem crew could often be heard blaring from my bed room.
(I bet most of you are like Spragga what & who got scared?!? Hahahaha).
Steve: My early days in the scene a lot of my musical tastes can be traced back to then, that is the end of the 80’s early 90’s – that’s showing my age!! Hahaha.

Tell us one thing you like about each other? And one thing you cant stand about each other?
Jnr: I like the fact that Steve never slept with any of my girlfriends…I hate the fact that he could of at any time the pretty c**t. Although now a lovely young lady has made an honest man of him so we’re all safe hahaha!
Steve: He just too nice god damm it!! Also, he needs to grow a foot I keep getting eye stabbed by a haircut….
An irritating habit you each have?
Jnr: I’m a bit too hard on my self and constantly bug my friends after a set telling them that I could have played better and I’m not happy with my set despite having just ripped up the club.
Steve: Erm intolerant he says quietly….

Where do you see yourselves in say 5 years time?

Jnr: Hopefully I’ll still be Djing and will have a successful career on a global scale. I’m really looking forward to improving as a producer as well and hope I’ll be making some truly inspiring music.
Steve: Top of the world ma!! Deaf probably hahahah you know what I don’t know I am just enjoying it for now.
You are playing for Deeper @ Babalou in Brixton on Friday the 8th June which is your neck of the woods, along side a name that is also fast becoming a household name around London, Alex Collings from Dirt Box - what are your thoughts on this?
Jnr: I’ve not seen Alex play but have heard he is the dog’s Bollox…did we find out if I can say Bollox yet?
There’s a lot of buzz around him at the mo so I look forward to hearing him play. Deeper is also being brought to my attention for all the right reasons so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s just down the road from where I live so I can leave my car at home which in forsight may not be a good thing =S
Steve you have been to Deeper before what where you impressions of the night and how do you feel your musical style could add something special to the night!?
Steve: Liking the venue a lot a catacomb club always adds a bit of something to the vibe and you get a good concentrated sound there, I have enjoyed the other ones that I have been too it was just s shame I had to leave before my time was up to do the radio. I am looking forward to seeing the night grow through 2007. As for my style with the energy and bounce to it, it starts with a toe tap and then before it you know it you are on the floor (if they arnt all ready there) dancing, it’s all about the journey.

What style can we expect to hear from you on the night at Deeper? Will be bringing some of what is ‘Throb’ to Deeper?!
Jnr: I’m gonna be playing some proppa Larrrrge House music and maybe even some Ghetto Techno it’s gonna be very big and very danceable =) in true Throb and Jnr’s Jamm tradition.
Steve: I think so being on before Jnr and knowing what the guy is like my bouncy upbeat side of life will set things up well to let Jnr off the leash so no hiding around the corners!!!
Thanks guys. Looking forward to meeting you at Deeper.
Steve: No worries looking forward to it!
Jnr: Nice one!
