*"!% Insurance companies

Lost my mobile in Ibiza last weekend

Anyhow as i pay £3.99 insurance every month, i figured i'd get a replacement.

WRONG! - apparently they won't pay out because i "didn't report it to the police whilst over there"

Sure, you're really going to burst into the nearest copshop shouting "SOMEONE HELP, I LOST MY PHONE!! OH NOOOO"

So i have an invoice in front of me for £200 + £15 sim + VAT.

W***ers!

:x

Reminding us all, once again, how important it is to READ THE FINE PRINT, DREW! ;)

That's the thing though.

When they SOLD me the insurance bit, they didn't send me any policy documents. The charge just appears on the monthly invoice.

Besides, i was hardly in the best of states to enter a police station at the time (or even much later on)

you always have to report it as stolen or lost to the police within 24 hrs and to them as well. It's a pain. You also end up having to go and make a statement in the UK as well, and they always tell you that they'll never catch the theif either

Sorry Drewster but that seem standard to me, although I take your point about not doing it here. I would have just reported it missing a couple of days later at home and not mentioned Ibiza....

Continuing the rant: I moved two weeks ago and my insurance company refused to transfer my household insurance policy to my new property.

I was burgled last year and made a small claim. I was told it was not their policy to renew if we'd made a claim for theft.

So I put it to them: "You've taken my premiums for the past three houses I've owned and now, even though we got a conviction for the burglar who is now in jail, you won't renew my policy because i had the nerve to made a claim?"

"That's right, we won't"

Twats.

In retrospect and all that.

However - i contacted my brother to call our service provider (not long after i lost it) and asked him to get another sorted so i'd have a replacement upon my return. He told them the situation as it was and they said fine, just fax them a letter on company letterhead and it'd all go through fine. Therefore we did as advised but they didn't keep their word.

Anyhow i've told them i'll take all our 15 or so phones elsewhere upon renewal.

The police man that took my statement for my stolen phone in April said he was fed up with the amount of people that come in to report lost or stolen phones for insurance purposes.

The only reason they need you to report it is for the crime reference number that they need for their paperwork.

It took me 3 attempts to get them to refund the sim i had to pay for, they asked for three seperate peices of information on each occasion. In the end i told them to forget it and put the phone down on them, 3 days later i got the cheque

Insurance companies are **** :spank:

I just use orange's own insurance - they can deliver a new phone the same day. they are expensive mind at £5 a month.

My service provider also told me that all i needed was a 'Lost reference no.' from my local police station and that would do.

Rang South Yorks police HQ and they said they couldn't do it unless it was lost locally so i went to a local station to try again and the kind lady filled out the document and i walked away with the reference no.

So, rang the service provider and gave them the number they had told me would be ok and said 99% certain the insurance co. would pay out. WRONG again!

I even rang the police station in Ibiza town and they said "sure we can do it, but not over the phone"

And i forgot (sorry) ....

They quoted me £175+VAT for the replacement phone, then when the invoice came it was for £200+VAT - PLUS - £6.99 carriage. Bloody cheek!

So now they are trying to trace our phone conversation where i was quoted the £175

Already have, but 11 months on contract to go and not worth buying out either.

Bugger!!! :spank:

Just pay for the line rental for the 11 months without using the phone for calls and open another contract with another service provider now.

I wouldnt let them have anymore money out of me than they had to.

I just try not to lose my phone!

Once in 10 years and 9 phones... though the one that got lost was painful (cost $800!!)

Problem is, i'd need to do that with all 15 phones.

And i don't think i could do that with the tariffs we're on.

I'm just going to write in to their complaints dept. reminding them how they didn't send me a policy document stating the terms etc.

I dont think any of us do :?
I just worked it out... the $800 phone I lost works out to $80/year over the 10 years I've been using mobiles. That's about $7 a month... about the same as insurance!

Guess I should a) think about insurance or b) buy cheaper phones!
