The army doesn't want the little barstewards. We can't be the most disciplined and best (yet woefully ill-equipped) army in the world if there's lots of little sh1ts in it who don't want to be there. Besides, once they'd left national service all you'd have is much better trained thugs, burglars and other assorted sh1tnits roaming the streets.

I think it's a great idea.

That way, when they're mugging old granny's for their pension money they can put to use all that army combat training...

ahem... trying to take the mantle of the army of the good ole US of A and apply it to your nation's armed forces, Paddy? All you have to do is look at the systematic level of torture our army has used in Iraq to know that the US Army KICKS ASS!

but beware of Nostrum and those Swiss... sleeping giant, I tell you ;)

You might be the best equipped but your army seems to have a worrying tendency to shoot it's own side. Ours is infinitely more disciplined, and I speak from personal experience.

I know, Paddy. I was joking ;)

Sorry- took it a little to seriously given yesterday being Remembrance Day. Humble apologies
It's ok, buddy. Yesterday was Veterans Day in the US.

Strange how we use the same day to honor living soldiers as opposed to the deceased. We have Memorial Day, to honor those who gave their lives in service, in May.

Remembrance Day is to comemorate the dead and show support to veterans still living.

Got it. So the money raised in the poppy appeals... that goes to veterans?

Exactly! :) It goes to the Royal British Legion, The Burma Star Association, The Normandy Veterans Association and various other veteran related charities. Incidentally, up until about 5 years ago it was known as the Haig Fund until someone pointed out that that senile old bastard was responsible for millions of British and Commonwealth deaths (he was the man who insisted that machine guns were a 'gimmick' and that tanks would never replace horseback cavalry. He also insisted that the British soldier should conduct himself as a gentleman at all times i.e. they should march accross no-man's-land rather than crawl or keep their heads down. 'Lions led by donkeys' indeed.

Sounds like Mr Haig was a brilliant tactician

Not everyone quickly adapts to changes in warfare... the mid-1800s with the adoption of total war was a major sea change, as was the emergence of the guerilla in the past century.
