Illegal Taxis

Just had the most amazing holiday, but something I didn't know about were the illegal taxis. It was just me and my friend, two girlies, and some guy came up to us outside Amnesia on our first night and asked if we needed a taxi. We thought "Great! That was easy!" at which point we arrived at his dodgy looking car... and he looked a bit dodgy too! So we said we'd changed our minds and he got really arsey! After that, we made a point of finding other Brits and asking if they wanted to share taxi fares back to San An. We figured safety in numbers. I guess we were maybe a little naive, and I'm sure 99% of illegal taxis are just regular people looking to make a bit of money but just thought other people (girls especially) should be aware.

Good thread

Even though they are "cracking down" on them the police can really do **** all about it

There are loads of illegal taxi drivers making SHED LOADS of money. I used them a couple of times but would NOT recommend using them if you are a girl on your own.

from today's diario de ibiza

two girls seriously injured in a pirate taxi. you lose your insurance cover as soon as you set foot in a car not licensed to carry paying passengers.

:(

I did not know that you lost your insurance cover. An excellent point made Stephen.

A translation;

Six people who traveled at dawn of yesterday in a Citroën Xantia by the highway of Sant Antoni were wounded after leaving their vehicle the route, according to sources informed into the Civil Guard of Traffic and the 112. Two English young people of 18 and 21 years, Kerry Marie M. and Amy P, were transferred in serious state to the Policlínica due to a strong craneoencefálico traumatismo one and diverse hurt and fractures the other. The rest of occupants, including a Bulgarian woman of 36 years who drived the vehicle, they underwent minor wounds by which had to be taken care of in Dog Misses. The great number of passengers, who the wreck happened at daybreak and the lack of relation between the implied ones made think about a first moment that it could be a pirate taxi. To first hours of afternoon, it discarded this hypothesis, although with reserves. “This supposition discards because these things it is necessary to demonstrate them and, so far, we cannot do it”, indicated from of Traffic. Police sources mentioned by IB3 Radio, however, gave like insurance that was an illegal transport. The local police of Eivissa and Sant Antoni indicated that they did not have certainty of this end. The facts happened on the 04.45 hours, to the height of kilometer 10.500 of the highway of Sant Antoni, in a straight section and with good visibility, although with slope and in works. The vehicle, that went from Eivissa to the bay of Sant Antoni, had to avoid to an animal and it left the route, according to the version offered by the conductor and who the Civil Guard considered like “possible but nonprobable”. After leaving the road, the Citroën Xantia upset and one of its occupants had to be rescued of between irons by the firemen.

I realize it's a bad business hopping in these illegal taxi's, however I met a good friend out there that way! We'll be meeting up when I get there in September....

A few of the people I talked to who done it said they were only on the island to make money from doing illegal taxis! 8O

There should be a sticky on this or something to keep people aware of the dangers of this.

we pretty much got in these every night, i mean, we didnt really fear for our safety wit the drivers cos there was 4 of us like. but it is a really ****ed up situation if anything should go wrong.and the bastards are taking the service off the actual taxi drivers. it was pretty much needs must as we were stumbling out of the club wanting to go to afterparties. cheeky beggars were chargin 5 euros over normal taxi fair aswell !

I wouldn't risk it. It's just not worth getting mugged, or worse.

At couple of years back, my boyfriend and I were trying to get from PDB to Amnesia for Cocoon but had just missed the disco bus and the taxi queue was massive. Some bloke approached us and we thought 'what the hell'. We walked to his (very beaten up) car and noticed there were two other guys in there, who were both laughing lots. I suddenly felt unsafe and just waited for a taxi in the end. If they were dodgy and ended up taking your money, I can't see the police being too sympathetic as you took the risk in the first place. Plus they could be off their face for all you know.

took one last year, was a bit worse for were saying i was the smallest, i ended up in the boot dread to think what could of happned if we had crashed. will just be sticking to the norm in future.

I was beginning to wonder if this was not such a big deal after all as no-one had replied but by the sounds of it, it is really important!! Quite scary actually! People talked about the Disco Bus, but where exactly does it leave from/drop off at? Could be useful for others to know...?

Some Organised Disco buses leave from Bar M.

Probably not the best idea but I do in London sometimes (though never on my own) and have many times in Ibiza. Must confess I've had the fear on some trips when the driver has seemed 100% more battered than I am 8O

It's the "it'll never happen to me" belief of many.....

we did it once - never again.

We couldnt get a legal taxi to take us up to Cala Salada were our villa was one year, because of the state of the roads (mainly dirt tracks up there then before they built the new roads, and we took the offer of one of these "taxi" as the thought of walking 4km up hill after a night in Pacha was really not what we wanted, got half way up and he started snorting coke off the back of his hand - offered us some and we were like "Stop the Car mate, we will walk!!" he got really arsey with us - totally wired and started shouting at us about wasting his time and still asking for 15€.....

Phil kicked the door open and the 4 of us got out and walked the rest of the way - just didnt fancy ending up down a ravine on the way up, nor did we fancy getting stopped by the Guarda Civil as we realised he had no lights when he was driving up the mountain..... worst walk of my life! But at least we got back alive ....

I must say, it is a pretty big deal. I literally got asked 5 times in one spot in a matter of 5 minutes, from 5 different illegal taxi's. In the end i basically ended up ignoring people who werent pulling up in a taxi, infront of me. But there were a couple of times that me and my mate got sick of waiting and took some illegal taxis, the locals who took us were heaps fun and really cool to chat with.

im from the uk and worked out in ibiza last year with a couple of mates...my mate had a camper van so we were giving taxis to make a bit of cash...must say that this helped us out 1 hell of alot...we had no problems and quite enjoyed it, got to mate some entertaining people...but like what was said earlier...if we had crashed or anything the **** would have hit the fan
