WSJ exposure? Yippie! Get ready for some more NYC banking asshats to show up and make housing even more inflated!
I live in a similar situation, where the 600 $/sqft they quoted is similar to what is being paid on my smaller neighboring island St. John. The situation is great for locals in the first 1-2 generations that get to take advantage of selling into rising prices. The problem is when their children and grandchildren have kids and need to buy their 1st home, and are unfortunately priced out of the market. Since the demand is global, I don't see prices coming down anytime soon unfortunately. Some people here with wage jobs live on derelict sailboats to make ends meet.
We don't even daydream about a home in IBZ anymore, Mallorca maybe. Maybe that's the next trip...
Its been mentioned before, but maybe this is the indirect solution to the 'massification' problem. The problem is that many locals end up as working-homeless in tent cities (see Hawaii).
