Two of the biggest UK rappers of the moment visited us this week and, although both have more dates on the island this year, these were their only full live band shows all summer. As soon as I arrived I knew there would be a lot of people because the venue was filling nicely right from the beginning. Like last week's bands (Friendly Fires and Metronomy), both artists also appeared at the recent Glastonbury festival!
Rising star Devlin was first with songs like "Brainwashed", "Days & nights", "Let it go" and "Runaway" among others from his debut Bud, sweat & beers. He told the crowd to go mental and mental they went with drinks flying in all directions, something that would continue during the headliner's show. I was hoping he would play, as he did for Radio 1's Live Lounge, "Blind faith" by Chase & Status (that would have been a perfect finale) but we weren't that lucky. Great show, although a bit short, with the best response to an opening act so far this season!
After Doorly's brilliant 70-minute session (the longest I remember from him in the hotel), Professor Green came out with a setlist built around the hits from Alive till I'm dead ("I need you tonight" -which samples the INXS song of the same title-, "Just be good to Green", "Jungle", "Monster", etc), plus covers (The Pixies' "Where is my mind?", Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" and a medley with Amerie's "One thing"/A Tribe Called Quest's "Can I kick it"/Dizzee Rascal's "Fix up look sharp") and even new songs ("Coming to get me" and "Read all about it", that will be the first single from the pro's second album At your inconvenience to be released in october). He came and he conquered!
As expected when Ibiza Rocks brings rap artists, a very busy night (a bit less than for Fatboy Slim but similar to the opening with Plan B) and with a younger crowd than usual!
Favourite moment: Professor Green covering The Pixies... now that was a surprise!
