Me and my mate arrive at Stansted stupidly early, so relax and get started on the beers. Some friends of ours turn up, few more beers, everyone with a huge smile on their face, excited and raring to go . No flight delays, everything goes smooth … start giggling like an idiot at the first sight of Es Vedra and the beautiful south west coast of the island through the window … off the plane and feel that gorgeous heat … our bags arrive super quick so jump straight into a cab …
Checked into the ever dependable Jet apts, dumped the bags, quick shower, some cheap nosh at the Jet cafeteria on the corner, then down to Bora Bora … such a great feeling to see that place rocking for the first time, with Gee grinning like a madman behind the decks as ever, it felt like being home! Just so nice to be back there …
Stayed at Bora Bora til the end, then grabbed a dodgy cab into Ibiza Town, turned out to be a really nice bloke who gave us his card and said to give him a call if we needed anything. Got sorted for tickets etc. from a fella we know at one of the bars along the front, he was at K-ube last year but has moved a few doors down, and a few vodka limons later move on to the Hed Kandi Opening Party @ El Divino …
Met Spotlights own Matt Collins (top bloke!! cheers for the beer fella ) who had the place rocking … things get a bit hazy after Matt finished , tho I do remember some great tunes from Eric Kupper and Stoney, we got live PAs of Put Em High and A Higher Place … and a very excited Paul Wilkins on the mic!! Fantastic night, huuuge party atmosphere, and a great way to get things started …
Leave El Divino (after what seemed like only a few minutes … ) into the morning sun, and shuffle round the harbour to Croissant Show … but it’s all a bit hectic and scary there, so get a cab back to PDB with the bright idea of sleeping on the beach … which obviously doesn’t happen, so spend the next few hours writhing & sweating under an umbrella in front of Bora Bora. A few beers ease the pain, and by then it its time to get showered and head to Space …
Get tickets sorted and get in there just before 4 … we’re grinning from ear to ear as we walk in, and the terrace is nicely bumping, an amazing sight!! Meet up with our friends who are already rolling, wander round a bit, have a dance, smile a lot. Jose De Divina was on the decks, and played a great set, very impressed, perfect Ibiza afternoon stuff. Tania Vulcano was up next, and tho her music is perfect for DC10, don’t think it quite works on the Space terrace, bit too deep & minimal …
Left Space for a bit, grabbed some food and beers at Bora Bora, had a bit of a boogie, then back to Space .. caught the last few tunes from Danny Howells – really good stuff, I’m a big fan of Howells, should have gone back in earlier for more of his set … he ended with Richie Havens – Going Back To My Roots (nice), then Steve Lawler up next – had never experienced a Lawler terrace set before, and it was sooooo good!! Proper hands in the air stuff, loads of anthems, he destroyed the place … this is what WLS is all about … 8)
Head inside (so much nicer in there now, seems twice as big!! not too sure about the vast Red Bull corporate sponsorship tho ) for James Zabiela, who was just amazing … played it pretty tough, from techy house to breaks and back again, with trademark scratching and mad eq & effects … the boy rocks 8) . Damn knackered by now as no sleep night before so decide to quit Space, so unfortunately didn’t get to see Lawler and Howells b2b (anyone else catch this?). And we had planned to check out that new Kiss Somny club but didn’t … damn I really wish Ancient People was still open!!
Wake up 10ish feeling suprisingly fresh, grab some brekkie at the Jet café, then get a few hours down the beach. Few beers, then jump in a cab to DC10 … damn I love this place, just a totally unique atmosphere, difficult to put into words, been the last 4 years and it never fails to blow my head off 8) . Was a bit concerned the new roof thingy might ruin the vibe a bit, but it was better in fact, with a nice breeze blowing thru. Met up with our friends again to swap WLS stories (tales of an extremely battered Kate Lawler), and was great to meet Mark Sun in there too, top bloke!! 8) Some superb tuneage as ever, courtesy of Jo Mills, Tania V, Loco Dice and Clive Henry.
Left 7/8ish and next few hours at Bora are a bit of a blur, seem to remember talking to lots of randoms, and my mate getting shot down by every beautiful beach girl he tried chatting up … something to do with his red, sweaty face and bulging eyeballs perhaps? Hmm.
Jump in a cab 11ish to try and find Smokin Jo’s beach party thingy at Ciao Rosina on Talamanca … get dropped at the wrong end of the beach so have to walk a fair way up to find it. Seem to remember it being pretty quiet so didn’t stick around for long … tho our mates who went there and also Mark S said it was rocking later on … grabbed a few drinks then into Pacha for the S-Man, who was superb!! Only managed a couple hours tho before ultra tiredness got the better of us …
Anyway, got some half decent sleep, then a full beach day, with plenty of beers and some late afternoon dancing at good ol’ Bora. 7ish jump into a cab over to San An … friend of mine, Jamie Gittins, is the promoter/ressie DJ at the Orange Corner, he had no pre-parties scheduled that night so I got to play!! Did 3 hours (9 til 12), soulful house into more funky stuff later, and it was just so nice … the view from behind the decks out across the harbour was beautiful … had to pinch myself a few times!! And was the first time I’ve had podium dancers while I’ve been playing too! Cheers to Jamie for sorting that out ... get along to Orange Corner folks next time you're in San An. 8) After my set and a few more drinks nearly went to Garlands @ Eden but decided against it …
Check out of Jet in the morn, leave the bags downstairs and hit the beach for the day … later on grab a few beers, and bump into Mark S again. 8) Get some decent fish at the place on the beach just across from what used to be Pago Pago (been to this place for food last few years, great paella, not sure what its called tho), back to Bora Bora, few more beers, dance a bit … then couldn’t handle being down BB anymore, nearly blubbing into my drink at this point , so head to a bar on the main street to watch Portugal beat Holland, then one last beer, and a cab to the airport …
So that’s it … only a short trip, which felt really strange (and far too quick) as usually go for 2 weeks, hire a car, drive around and explore the island inbetween the clubbing … it just weren’t long enough goddamnit, not used to cramming it all into a few days, haven’t had the proper training! So defo considering a week or 2 in September … if I can just find the money from somewhere …
And to finish here’s a few of the tunes I remember hearing …
Flower Power – Flower Power
proper ibeefa anthem this, reminds me a lot of Guitarra G …
Chus & Penn – Will I Discover Love
perfect Bora Bora afternoon groover
Rocking Music
heard just about every mix of this, including a great teasing dub at DC10
Planet Funk – the Switch (King Unique remix)
Alex, Jamie & co were right about this one … what a tune! One of Lawlers terrace anthems …
Eric Prydz – Call On Me
another Lawler terrace anthem … and was played at BB too …
Lola’s Theme (Eric Prydz remix)
new lease of life etc. etc. … sounds good tho, yet another Lawler terrace anthem
Alex Neri – Housetrack
twice at DC10 … really suits that place
Skullduggery – Fly Music
Jaxx/Tenaglia mash up, this destroyed DC10!
Lola’s Theme/Put Em High mashup
this years BB tune for me … v. cheesy, but in that setting it just works so well … damn near had me in tears just before we left on our last day …
ps. anyone wanna buy me one of the flats they’re building next to Bora Bora?!?
