Day 1
I had been looking forward to this, my eighth trip in 14 years, since I booked in early July... Hell, since leaving in September last year after the We Love... Closing :) Since this trip coincided with the year I turned 40, it was an excuse for a longer than usual trip - Thursday to Tuesday, with the firm intention of discovering DC10 and Circo Loco for the first time, as well as the Cocoon closing, on Monday, and going to Enter at Space. I had got into the mood by reading up on the Spotlight forums, and was loving the Enter compilation - especially the dicoteca mix by Matador. Who just happened to be on the line-up on 25 September, my first night in Ibiza!

My flight in was smooth and uneventful, direct thanks to Ryanair and with extra legroom paid for. The sense of excitement on the plane as Ibiza came into view was palpable, and the cheer louder than usual on landing. The weather was unfortunately not great, but I hopped into a cab and the sight of the billboards and the Ushuaia Tower in the distance as I drove to PDB told me I had arrived. Within a few minutes of dropping my luggage at Hotel Algarb, I was into my shorts and heading to the Migjorn apartments where my three mates were staying. The Algarb is ok, clean and comfotable beds, although the furniture and TVs clearly haven't been renovated since the seventies... And this year I paid almost double what I paid last year. The Migjorn is pricey but definitely a nice place to stay if you're prepared to splash the cash. Great design and pool, with top tunes mixed by their barman Marcelo, who along with Ricky were always smiling and joking with the guests. Best service I've experienced in Ibiza!

Having met up with two of my mates, the first port of call was to fill up the fridge with Grey Goose vodka, corona beer and red bull for the pre-party later :) Since the weather was still lousy, we had started on the vodka red bulls by five. And when the sun came out, we decided to head down to Sands to catch Carl Cox's funk and soul set. It was nice to walk down playa d'en bossa, and as we walked past Beach House, the party there was already well under way. Sands in contrast, while full, was dead and the big man himself was not yet on the decks. The music was no way danceable, and you had to get tokens to buy drinks... So we gave up and headed back to Beach House. What a great idea that turned out to be! The tunes were excellent, the crowd was up for it and the beers were affordable (4 euro if I remember well). So we had a few beers and a dance as the sun went down, and then decided to have a bite to eat there since the vibe was so good. After a bit of a struggle to find a table waitress, and the gorgeous 'VIP person' (her own words!) taking us to her, we sat down next to the dancefloor and ordered some food. We ended up having a great meal - tagliata di manzo with potatoes and salad, perfectly cooked and seasoned tender steak. I can highly recommend eating at Beach House.

After dinner I headed back to the Algarb through the driving rain to get changed for Enter. Before heading to Space we got some supplies and had a few more vodka red bulls at the Migjorn. I was so keen to get to Enter, we headed over for about 1am. We paid 45 euro I think to buy pre-sale tickets on the strip, and were able to head straight in without queueing. It was such a great feeling to be back in Space!!! Still without a doubt my favourite club. We did the tour, enjoying the terraza a bit before going in to the discoteca for Chris Liebing. At that point his set was not really doing it for us, so we went back to the terraza with the firm intention to catch the last half hour of his set. And good that we did - when we came back at 2:00, he was playing some great driving techno.

As the end of his set approached, I was a bit worried that it would be hard for Matador to take it a step up, as there is often a lull hen the DJs change over. How wrong I was! Matador smashed it from first to last - taking the techno up a level from where Chris Liebing had left it. Cue two hours of perfect, melodic, hypnotic techno, often verging on trance, which is just how I like it. Matador's set was even better than his mix on the Enter compilation, but I recognised at least a couple of tracks from the album, and I was locked in to the music for the duration.

When Richie Hawtin came one, I was curious to see how he would do as I had never seen him before and he is such a legend. But to be honest, I experienced that lull I was talking about when he came on... He took it down a couple of notches, and although the show started with him, with dancers in the eye of the dot either side of him, after half an hour I was done. With tiredness catching up with me, I decided to call it a night and headed back to my hotel, still buzzing from Matador's set and decidedly satisfied with my first night of five in Ibiza!!!

Just time for a few observations that had struck me already after a first day/night in Ibiza (and which were confirmed over subsequent days):

1. There was much more space to dance in the clubs than last year. I started a heated debate elsewhere here about VIP, because after last year and a friend's recent experience at Space I was considering getting a table. But for both Enter and We Love, there was never a time when the club was so packed that you couldn't dance, which was a pleasure! So VIP would have been a waste of money and meant missing out on the dancefloor vibe. The We Love closing was definitely less crowded than last year - maybe because the line-ups were less attractive?
2. There were more women DJs than I remember - loved Tania Vulcano and Nicole Moudaber at DC10, and there was also Annie Mac at We Love (although her set didn't do it for me)
3. Ibiza was much more ethnically diverse than I remember in previous years (don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with that, on the contrary)
4. Some guys still insist on taking their t-shirts off in clubs (yuck) and some girls go out clubbing in swimming costumes which they would be better off leaving in their suitcases...

Day 2

I surfaced around midday on Friday, feeling definitely worse for wear and starving... I had not thought to buy any snacks so headed straight for Pago Pago beach bar for a cafe con leche and scrambled eggs and bacon. Great little place, friendly staff, good food, fast service and good value! Plus the sun was shining so I started to feel much better. It was quite breezy on the beach though, so headed over to the Migjorn to see if the guys had surfaced and to hang out by the pool. Slowly my mates surfaced and after refuelling at Pago Pago joined me by the pool for the afternoon. Had a great laugh with Ricky and Marcelo, who mixes a great bloody Mary as well as some good tunes! The music by the pool was so good that we bought a mix CD from him. Around 4 our other mate arrived and so soon enough we were on it again with the vodka red bulls. But that's when my body started to betray me... When I should have been gearing up for a big night culminating in the Music On closing, I found myself craving sleep. So I headed back to the Algarb for a disco nap.

Woke up at 9 and joined the guys at a great little restaurant in Ibiza's old town called La Brasa. It has a fantastic terrace which seems to have been built around a massive tree and offers plenty of shade. We tucked in to some slow cooked lamb and a coupe of good bottlea of red wine, followed by some hierbas on the house. Afterwards we headed over to Pereyra, which is a long-established live music bar around the corner. It's owned by a Dutch guy who plays in the band, and who has run the place for 23 years. Apparently its the only bar in Ibiza town which has a late night license for live music, and so some envious big nightclub owners are looking to get them out when their lease expires... Seems a real shame as it is a nice change from the clubbing scene.

However I had not rediscovered my mojo, and after a couple of drinks and just as the live jazz was starting up, I headed back to my hotel for an early night. The guys stayed until the bar closed around 4:30! I was gutted to miss the Music On closing, which had been one of the highlights of my visit to Ibiza last year, but I just didn't have the energy. Part of me was thinking that if I went to bed early enough, I could go first thing in the morning. However when I surfaced the next day at 9, after 8 hours of good sleep, I thought it was a bit late to head over to Amnesia. It turns out Music On was still going strong until noon so I could definitely have made it, although it would have felt weird to turn up fresh and sober to a party where everyone has been on it for hours! Although I've read here that some seasoned Ibiza pros do just that, turn up early in the morning after getting some sleep... Maybe next year!

Day 3

It was a great feeling to wake up with a clear head and feeling rested after a good night's sleep, even though this was tinged with regret at missing the Music On closing... And the sun was shining! So I quickly got up and headed for another lovely breakfast at Pago Pago. It was scorchio so after breakfast I headed over to the Migjorn to chill out by the pool until my mates emerged. Spent an excellent day by the pool enjoying Marcelo's top tunes and catching some rays. When the guys emerged we decided to have dinner at KM5, a favourite haunt of ours from the early days of our visits to Ibiza in the noughties. The plan for after was to head to Pacha for the Paris by Night party. While I like Pacha, I was a bit sceptical about this party, mainly because the headline DJ was Bob Sinclar who is far too cheesy for my liking. But having not been clubbing the night before I thought I'd give it a go.

After a relaxing day by the pool and a few vodka red bulls on the roof terrace of the Migjorn as the sun set, we headed out to grab a taxi to KM5. And what a revelation that turned out to be! It was still recognisably the same place, with the chill out areas and outdoor beds for lounging on, just more upmarket and stylish. We sat down at a nice table and were all impressed by the friendly and attentive service from the good looking, tattooed waitresses. The food was excellent - I had ceviche as a starter which I had never had before, followed by an excellent Argentinian melt in your mouth steak. After dinner we headed back to PDB for a few sharpeners before jumping in a cab to Pacha.

Pacha was decked out with Parisian-style lights and even a mini Eiffel tower, and although it was only 1 am the dancefloor was jumping, and the crowd were already well up for it and cheering on the DJ (Danny Howard I think it was). The DJ booth has become much larger than it used to be, and behind it there is now a stage with a massive LED screen behind it where there was an MC and soul singer and graphics flashing past with the name of the DJ. After a bit of a dance we decided to do the usual tour via the Funky Room and the roof terrace. The Pacha terrace is still a joy to behold and always fun for a bit of people watching - Pacha is still the club people go to mainly to see and be seen, and there were plenty of glamourous ladies in high heels and short dresses.

After a drink and a few cigarettes we went back in to the main room for a dance. And for a while I had a good time - there was plenty of space to dance, and the music was decent house music. As always at Pacha it seems there are permanently people pushing past you from all sides to get to somewhere else, but I tried not to let that get to me! But after a while the music started to get on my nerves, and I found myself thinking "I'll give it one more track and if it doesn't get any better, I'm out of here". After doing this a few times, I did give up and left, having enjoyed a couple of hours at a nice club, but not having danced nearly as much as I would have liked or really enjoying the music for any length of time. It's hard to explain why the music wasn't doing it for me - I would describe it as quite tribal if that makes any sense, very percussion heavy and just not hypnotic or uplifting at all. I guess that Guy Gerber the night before would have been more up my street.
