Ibiza Part VII

So, a review of 2014. My seventh trip to the island. Probably one of the best trips so far as well. Going out as an actual promoter, you look at things \ understand things in Ibiza slightly differently. This is a long post.

Saturday 14th June
Not really much to discuss here, as we hadn't flown out to Ibiza yet. Special mention to the Ibis Budget in Bradford, for how much of a seedy hotel it was. If you want somewhere with a bit of class (which I suppose we shouldn't of expected with it being a budget hotel at £27 between me and mate in central Bradford), stay somewhere else.

Sunday 15th June
Turned up to Leeds Bradford airport at 5am, and instantly hit the drinks. It's worth noting that Leeds Bradford now has a smoking area which it hasn't done in previous years. Never managed to check it out, gate came up as closing just as we got to it. Flight over was crazy, took one of my best mates with me who hadn't been before, alongside another six friends. One of the group was a promoter from a northern clubbing brand, and the rest were mutual friends. Drank on the plane... Drank quite a lot on the plane. Nothing like getting off the plane in Ibiza pissed at 10am. From there, we divided up into two taxis and headed straight to San Antonio, for a visit to Kanya for some more drinks, a dip in the pool, and catching up (been a few months since some of us saw each other). I have always loved the vibe at Kanya. Nice and chilled, and this day was no different. Stayed there for a few hours (racking up a small fortune), then headed to the hotel to check in.

We stayed in Hostal Tarba, which is just up the road which has Wips on the corner. Quite a nice place to stay it must be said. Beds weren't the most comfortable in the world, but that wasn't going to be such an issue with us being out most of the day and night. I must say, the bar staff were good. One of the bar staff said I could put some music on, so put on my recent mix that myself and three other DJs recorded for Transcend's vinyl event in May.

After a relaxed day in Ibiza, we all got ready and headed out to Buddha Bar to watch the sunset and get some food. Always been a big fan of Buddha Bar since I was first introduced to it, and this was no different. Moved things around a little since I was last there. All the sofas (I think they were) that used to be along the promenade are now tables. We all watched a beautiful sunset, then headed off to Tropi, the Trance bar in the west end opposite the strip club called Sin. Saw Andy Allwood, resident at V club and spotlighter, so had a quick catch up with him. Tropi was just nuts as usual, made even better now they've upgraded the DJ equipment in there (which would come in handy for Wednesday). €7 for pints of vodka red bull. Couple of those, and I was close to being on the floor. So drank another for good measure, then stumbled home. Can't at this point remember who I was with. I think I may have left a few people at Tropi...

Got woken up at 6am, to find one of my best mates I was sharing a room with had also turned up - he either came back with me, or he was let in. Either way, we both got woken up. The room directly above us, one hell of a screaming argument was going on. Two girls were full on screaming at each other. Following by loud thumps as things got thrown around, then shattering as things broke. A few moments later, a door slammed, and a suitcase was bounced from step to step down the stairs. Friendship usually becomes stronger in Ibiza. This was certainly not the case.

Monday 16th June
Woke up about 8am, feeling fairly fresh considering I'd had at best four hours sleep. As everyone was still asleep, decided to get up and head down to the restaurant next to wips supermarket and grab a fry up. Usually good food there, but the beans were a tad on the cold side. Oh well. Headed back to the hotel, to find people we're starting to come around, so we hatched a plan to go to Cala Bassa.

I have to say, it's a beautiful beach. Those that know me know how much I detest staying stuck in San An \ PDB \ Eivissa for the entire trip. I like to go and see new places. Was good that it was a short ferry ride away. We spent most of the day there, discussing all sorts of codshit. Parties we'd been to, experiences of being out of it, experiences of DJs being off their rocker. Got a text from another promoter running a night on the island, who let me know that the core chunk of Crasher's lineup (everyone I wanted to see) had been pulled, which annoyed me somewhat. No announcement from the club, mind you. I already knew from an agent that two guys had been pulled, but had been hoping (in vain) that they'd keep at least some of the guys I wanted to see. We were now just going to Crasher because it was Crasher, not because of the DJs playing. Shame they didn't halve the cost of the ticket.

Evening rolled around, and a day of drinking had taken its toll, so we missed the sunset strip. Watched the football, got ready, then headed to Gatecrasher for the Crasher launch night. Turned up, and they instantly gave us grief on the door. We'd bought tickets from the Kiosk opposite Plastik, which included a free drink. The staff at Gatecrasher then said that these drinks tokens were under no circumstances valid. Got in, to discover (unsurprisingly) that half the club was shut (including all of upstairs) and that, at half midnight, it was very empty, so hit the bar. €8 for a bottle of water, €15 for a vodka pepsi and €18 for a bottle of beer. I do hate Ibiza club prices. Still, smoking area was open upstairs, music was finally beginning to pick up... could be worse places in the world to be.

Tenisha played a great set, and Andy Moor b2b Lange built on that, banging it out (low bpm) and throwing some of their classic reworks in, which got the not exactly huge (can't of been more than 700 people in there at peak) crowd going. Chicane then came on. While I rate Chicane as a producer, I've never really rated him as a DJ. He played a much more down tempo set, taking all the energy out the room that Lange & Andy had built. Spent more of his set outside smoking than I did on the dance floor, which for Andy & Lange I'd been unable to move from, despite nicotine cravings. It was here I bumped into one of my international DJ friends. The ninth member of our group turned up about 4am, just as Ben Gold came on, having been on a flight a day later. Credit to Ben, for trying to salvage what was left of the dance floor. By this point, half the people of the club (if not more) had abandoned ship, and it was beginning to feel very empty. The atmosphere was gone, even if the music was great. By the end of Ben's set, our group split in half, with half of us staying at Crasher and the other half going back to the hotel. Suckley came on, and smashed it, proper in your face psy\hard trance. Shame it was so empty. Chicane's set had sucked all my energy to dance, so spent more time just chilling to be honest. The remains of our group decided to head home, with international DJ in tow.

I couldn't imagine as a promoter, doing what Gatecrasher did. Pissing around their customers, cancelling DJs without warning their punters. I know they've done at their events after this. It's shocking behaviour.

Tuesday 17th June
Life was a bit more difficult on Tuesday, owing to little to no sleep. We start our story at around 1pm (yes, I'm missing out a chunk from leaving Crasher). Majority of us hadn't had that much sleep, if any. But today was Captured Day. I made a decision around this time to not drink or do anything else, as I wasn't in a fit mental state. The 18th of June last year was the absolute worst day of my life, and with that anniversary only one day away, I'd only be getting on it to escape, so sacked that off and stayed sober.

We managed to get the group together fairly early on to make the 4pm bus to Gala Night, including spotlighter Scottish-Helen and her boyfriend. One of our friends was absolutely adamant we'd make it, or else there'd be hell to pay. Two of our group accidently did a line of rad rather than charly, and were off in their own world, having to be guided around. One of the two had never done it before. Chundering outside of the Kiosk opposite Plastik may not of been his finest moment (and may well have put off the people eating food at the cafe), but it was highly amusing. At the same time, I did fell pretty sorry for them, as they basically weren't human beings anymore. .
Eventually got wind at 4.15pm that the bus to Gala night has been cancelled, so we got taxis up there, which I was happy about as I got to eat some food. Even if it was just a burger king, you know what you're getting at least.

Got to gala night for around 5pm, with things just getting going. It wasn't the busiest place in the world, but that was the story of our whole holiday. Everyone there was there for the music, which created a great atmosphere to it. No nuggets like there were at Crasher. The sets built and built all night. And the drinks were cheap, which was a good thing (even if I wasn't drinking). Food however, was terrible.
Gai Barone played an amazing progressive set. If you're into that kind of music, I'd recommend checking him out. Easily going to be someone we book for Transcend in the coming 12 months. The Thrillseekers, Sean Tyas, and Giuseppe Ottaviani all played outstanding sets, but special mention goes to Standerwick. He's never played a dull set, in the last six months I've known of his existence as a DJ. From ASOT 650 in Feb to this event, every set his played has been on point. I think he'll go far in the world. He's already played for us, and I reckon we'll see him feature again.

Post captured, we headed back to the hostel to get some drinks in, then headed up to Tropi again where Tyas, Standerwick and The Thrillseekers were all playing back to back. Met the two girls staying next door to us at this point, and invited them out to Transcend tomorrow. My two hotel room mates were absolute trollied, so I decided to leave them to it, and try to get an early night.

Wednesday 18th June
Woken up to my two hotel mates stumbling through the door about 11am, one of which was struggling to even stand. So I got myself up, got him to drink loads of water, put him to bed then prepared a bin incase he was sick. Me and my other mate then headed out to get some food. I've never seen someone take 20 minutes to eat a small breakfast before. Credit where credit is due though, he at least finished it.

Headed back to the hotel, and joined another two of our mates down by the pool, where we spent most of the day. Headed down to Tropi just about 9pm (should of been there at 9pm on the dot, but tried to rally our entire group who were too busy faffing around so gave up), to kick off Transcend vs Ibiza Trance Family. For those of you who don't read my postings on here, I run a Trance night currently based in Bristol called Transcend. Sam Mitcham, promoter of Driftwood \ Sunk \ Captured was playing when I turned up, a nice warmup set steadily building, then he went back to back with the Tropi resident, Paul Stone until our night officially started at 11. Auren was on at this point, for only his second gig. Nervous to start with, he soon eased into it and was looking like a natural behind the booth by the end of his set. A great combination of classics, some proper uplifting stuff, and a bit of driving tech towards the end. JRM was on after, who played a bit of a darker set, with an uplifting section in the middle. By this point (around half midnight) the bar was beginning to fill up nicely, and the west end was steadily getting busier from where it had been at 9pm. I will note however, that at no point did the west end not feel 'dead'. I've seen it so much busier in previous years. After JRM finished, I jumped on to deliver my favourite style. Balls to the wall with some hidden gems thrown in to keep the crowd guessing. I've posted my set up elsewhere on the forum, so have a listen! Finally to step up was Shambles, who is anything but his namesake behind the decks. He smashed it, playing a proper Trance closing set. The girls from next door turned up about half way into my set, which surprised me as I never expected them to actually turn up. One of JRMs friends is another fellow spotlighter, it must be noted.

After this point, we headed back to the hotel (via a long detour dealing with one of my friends, the guy who I put to bed this morning, as he was in a state again).

Thursday 19th June
The big one. This was what this holiday was all about. Cream @ Amnesia, with Paul van Dyk, John Askew b2b Simon Patterson and Solarstone.

Did the usual chilling round the pool during the day, so will skip to Cream. Ended up getting the Taxi to Cream rather than the bus, draining into my somewhat limited funds by this point. But it was Cream, exceptions could be made. Bumped into the two girls from next door just as we got there. Now, normally when I go to Amnesia, I stand to the right of the DJ booth on the raised steps. However, most of our group stand on the subwoofer stack at the back, so ended up separating into two groups for a chunk of the night. Spent some time with some other friends who were out of the island, and, tbh, I was absolute trashed at Cream. Unusually, I do remember most of the night. Solarstone and PvD played absolutely amazing sets. I'm a huge fan of Paul and his sets (part DJ, part live), and his Cream sets to me are something special. Knowing the dross I had to look forward to in September (am not a fan of Above & Beyond), I went for it. Patterson and Askew were a bit boring at points, but did have an overall good track selection. One thing I did notice from their back to back, is that Patterson did most of the mixing. I can only imagine why Askew didn't... Left cream when it finished, got the discobus home...

Friday 20th June
...Which was full, and there were some right nuggets on it. But hey, everyone is an Ibiza virgin at some stage. Headed back to the hotel, got some vodka, then headed down to the beach by Buddha Bar. Stayed there until early afternoon, then moved over to Buddha Bar itself and took over the hut, spending the rest of my cash on Vodka Redbulls to keep me awake. I dozed off about 2pm, and woke up about an hour later, so decided to get myself up and head back to the hotel to get some sleep. Just as I got settled, my two mates turned up with another bottle of vodka and a lot more coca cola and red bull. So got back up and carried on. One of them was flying out in a few hours, so was determined to make the most of his last day in Ibiza. After he left, the remaining eight of us went down to the fountains for a meal together. Our first actual meal together the whole holiday, then headed off to Tropi for the final night.

After a couple of hours, myself and my one remaining roommate headed for a wander down passed Itaca, to go check out Ocean Beach (Although it was closed). It's actually quite a big venue. Not sure I'd want to spend all day in there though, but I guess... don't knock it until you've tried it. Headed back up to Tropi, and left about an hour later to go to bed.

Saturday 21st June
Woke up about 8.30am to say goodbye to the rest of our group, minus the person I was sharing a room with. Promptly went back to bed with the intention of only being in bed another hour. Woke up at 3pm. Whoops. Packed all my stuff up, then headed out to the west end to pick up a wrist band for Ibiza 2014 and a poster for Cream (I collect the Cream posters, I've got every event I've ever been to except the very first one). Went back to the hotel, and cracked up a bottle of vodka and listened to a mates mix that I'd promised I'd listen to. It was three hours long, so was fairly pissed by the end of it. Headed down to Linekars for one drink, to see how the bar had changed (it's had a refit this season) and was impressed. Had a jug of cocktail, went back to my hotel, collected my belongings, then headed to the airport via bus, desperately trying to sober myself up. Flew back to Bristol without a hitch.

Next Trip: 8th - 15th September with spotlighter Phil_Dicko and some of our mutual friends staying in a villa. To think we met on here, and became good friends. He's also one of my residents for Transcend.

Good review, Sir. Sounds like it was all about Cream.

Next Trip: 8th - 15th September with spotlighter Phil_Dicko and some of our mutual friends staying in a villa. To think we met on here, and became good friends. He's also one of my residents for Transcend.

In the words of the great Alan Partridge, "Oooooooooh, you're gonna have a good time!"

Seriously, I'm starting to realise the main draw back of going in September is the interminable waiting, waiting, waiting. It's gonna be a belter though. It's all set up. Villa experience, perfect-size group, Transcend, Journey, IoT. And I'll be out there for longer than a week this time.

I really do get the sense from this review (and from chatting to you) that the island has been quieter so far this year. Yet so many people I know are going for Island of Trance week. Every man and his dog, it seems. I think it'll be a totally different story come September.

Good review!

To me the island felt quieter this year yes, but I found the clubs were very busy. It was traffic etc where I noticed the quiet side

That last trip feels like ages ago! Was good to see you lot out there :) I had probably my quietest ever holiday this time round with only 2 nights out you lot smashed it.
I have to say though that although that Cream was one of the best ones I've been to over the years I didn't rate PVD at all. Think he's gone massively cheesy the last couple of years compared to the PVD of old. Solarstone was brilliant.19 days til my next trip which is my 'proper' Ibiza trip of the summer. Not long til you'll be back yourself :)

Just over four weeks I believe, I'm not counting at the moment actually. Got other stuff on to look forward to first. FSOE350 and The Orchard Party (Marathon 8 hour set at a microfestival... yes please!)

He's not the PvD of old (although I've only got the old mixes to go on from his sets) but I still highly rate him. His technical ability is second to none. He's an actual live show now.
