After seeing the weather reports for Bestival, we decided to avoid risking drowning in the floods and booked a last minute break to Ibiza for 3 nights, 4 days, last weekend. I'd heard there had been a lot of changes to the island and wanted to check it out for myself....
Friday - had a great flight with Thomsonfly, left on time and no turbulence which was a relief for a nervous flier like me! Arrived about 10am and headed straight to Calla Conta for some much needed beach time.
In the evening we met up with some friends working out there, and had a meal in Coastline (wouldn't recommend it, quite expensive and not very good food!). Proceeded to get very drunk and after fun and games at our friends apartment we finally rolled into bed at 4am (and this was our 'tame' night!)
Saturday - after a few hours nursing a killer hangover by the pool, we made our way to Zoo Project closing at about 6pm. I'd heard a lot of good things about this night, and wasn't disappointed. Probably one of the most fun nights Ive had in ages, the Zoo Project certainly knows how to put on a good show - dancers, jugglers, fire throwers, giant dancing bunnies (!!) were there to entertain us, and topless massueses kept the boys happy lol The music was really good too, its just a shame it finishes at 12am!
After that our mate was dj-ing in Eden so we popped in there to see his set. Had a good time minxing about in the back room, the main room was pretty terrible though!
Sunday - Headed to the famous Passion at about 3pm for some much needed smoothies and food. Due to the new laws, Space wasn't opening til 4.30pm, so we took our time, had a few drinks and went in at about 6pm..... to find and empty terrace!! Very shocking, previously when we've gone in at 2pm it's been hard to even find a space, but to see so few people on the sunset terrace so late in the day was quite worrying! It did fill out by 7-8pm, infact once the inside terrace was open it was stupidly busy as always, but it seems that people are clubbing later now, due to the clubs opening later.
They've also totally covered up the sunset terrace now so now sunlight gets in It kind of defeats the idea of it being a sunset terrace!
We saw Smokin Jo on the sunset terrace, who was good and a nice change from the cheese that was being played by the first dj - does anyone know who that was?
We used our pass out at about 10pm and went to a few bars in PDB, got back into Space for 1am and saw the whole set by Sasha b2b with James Zabelia - amazing! It was quite funny seeing Zabielia bouncing around and smiling every time he took to the decks, and Sasha was standing there moody as ever looking like he wanted to be anywhere but there! They played a really good set though, I'm liking Zabelia more and more now.
We spent the last couple of hours inside, Felix da Housecat played the last set. He was as good as ever, if very banging! The last tune almost blew my ears off lol.
It went on until a measly 6.15am! Quite early compared to previous WLS' I've been to.
Monday - celebrated our 8yr anniversary in Kasbah watching the sunset, then caught our flight home.
Observations:
Coming out of the clubs, everywhere was like a ghost town! No bars open, nowhere to carry on drinking/dancing. It's clear the new laws here are in full effect and people are sticking to them! You don't actually have any other options now after 6am, it's a choice of going home to bed, or if there's enough of you making your own carry on at the beach / someone's apartment. It is different, but whether it's a bad thing remains to be seen.
It seems that people now are going clubbing earlier in the day, i.e Bora Bora and DC10 kick off at 4.30pm, a lot of people we spoke to go there first, then move onto the bigger clubs. So you're still getting the same amoutn of clubbing as a carryon, but it's just the other way round.
Things are a lot more tighter now in Ibiza... those who indulge in the naughty side of clubbing, you have to be a LOT more careful. The bouncers in clubs are a lot more thorough on door searches, they regularly patrol the dancefloors trying to catch people out. We didn't see any police searches but heard a lot of reports about undercover police in clubs.
After speaking to some of the bar PR's it seems that the huge crackdown last year resulted in a lot of regular faces getting into serious trouble and doing some time in prison
So clubbing wise, Ibiza has changed (in my opinion). But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just not as lax as it used to be. Clubs used to be open all day before, dealers openly selling drugs on the streets, wrecked people stumbling around in front of 'normal' holiday makers. So I can see where people are coming from in saying that things did have to change. But you can still have a great time out there, new nights are opening all the time, and ok, you can't party all day and all night, but you can still have a solid 15hrs clubbing each night if you want to.... and anyone who wants to go for more than that is crazy
