does anyone have any experience and/or advice on hostels? i'm trying to keep this trip at a low low budget and am opting for hostels but not sure where to start.

are the hostel rooms safe? clean? whats the difference between a hostel and getting an apartment? whats the average price for a night at a hostel say in san antonio?
