Ibiza Construction Woes

Interesting but not really a suprise. You see it daily here on the mainland, unfinished projects are a dime a dozen while new contracts are extremely thin on the ground. A friend of mine who is a reputable builder here on the Costa Blanca has reduced his work force from 65 (3 years ago) to 7 now. He's still got work, but whereas it was upto 2 years ahead he cant see past the next 3-4 months.

Also this Plan E is generaly a great idea to generate work for local business', it really should apply to the major works also. How the hell can the Ibiza construction industry even begin to recover when the govenrment led schemes are drafting in from the mainland, it's a disgrace. They should offer the local companies the chance to quote for it first, and maybe insist on them solely suning local sub contractors also.

Planning applications for new private projects are practically non-existent, with many schemes abandoned mid-build (see photo,) whilst the only public works being carried out are smallish projects under the central Government's Plan E or big capital investment works like the new hospital or the expansion of the port.
For one reason or another the main contracts for these giant schemes are going to construction companies based on the mainland who are even bringing in their own sub-contractors, plumbers, electricians and so on.

i suspect that it's because they want the jobs done properly? having said that, ibiza can boast a motorway that turns into a canal, there can't be that many mainland contractors with the experience to construct that!

And dont forget the new bus station with no access road:roll:

You may roll your eyes, but I see it all the time here. Like Stephen says they probably use outside contractors so the job gets done properly. They have a tendancy here to do a job, take ages doing it causing god knows how much hassle, then forget to put drainage in, so they then have to go back and dig it all up again causing even more hassle. Earning themselves more money ;)
