I noticed on my recent trip to Ibiza where i was staying in Cala Nova, that the local beach (& other beaches aswell) had Red Cross agent's on them, which is just as well, as this stretch of coastline is notorious for it's big wave's & strong underwater current's. Infact on a visit in 1986 4 tourist's drowned whilst swimming in these water's, so something needed to be done.
I realize that they are there for giving out first aid etc, but i could'nt help noticing that they do other task's such as Life Guarding, checking the quality of the sea water, assuring the public by letting everyone know if the wave's/current's are dangerous or not (changing flag colour) etc. However as the Red Cross is a charitable organization, are these agent's paid for spending all there time looking out for other people's hazard's.
One thing is for certain, i felt more safer on an Ibizian beach than to a UK one, need i say more.
