Ibiza 2012 - Part I (24th - 29th June)

So here I am, again, after 5 nights in Ibiza. And this holiday was just something else entirely. Never what I expected from this holiday, that's for sure.
Two lads went: Myself and S1. This may be a long read...

Prelude
Part I of the 2012 season was meant to be a short quiet one. It got booked sometime after Digital Soceity on the 4th June, so was somewhat last minute.
One of the promoters for a Trance night in Sheffield posted that he was down at Markus Schulz for his 7 hour solo set at Ministry of Sound on my facebook news feed. Decided to comment, saying I was gutted that I was missing it to go to Ibiza and to rave hard for me. At the same time, another one of the Promoters, G1, posted saying that she was also missing the solo set to go to Ibiza. So me and her got chatting, and exchanged numbers, saying we should meet up in Ibiza.

Sunday, 24th June
Got to the airport, had a fairly uneventful trip over (excluding the 18 lads on a stag party sat in the rows front of me and S1). Landed in Ibiza for just after midday, and realised we'd just missed the bus to San An. Caught a taxi with someone else in the queue, to the sum of €31. Got out of the taxi and headed straight to Linekars to try and catch the F1.
Got there just as the drivers were starting their Formation Lap. Nothing like a bit of timing.
Settled down with a couple of pints, and watched Vettel take the lead. Prayed for a safety car, which we got, then saw Vettel go out which made me happy! Sadly, Hamilton going out on the penultimate lap did not make for good viewing for any of us watching the race. What a podium though! Had a shot of Jaeger for the road, then headed to check in to our Hostal, Hostal Montana.
Went out to go and get dinner. Went to Resturant Valencia down at the front of San An. Ended up missing the sunset without realising. Went to Ibiza Rocks to catch the football, only to realise we were an hour in and I'd forgotten to set my iPhone clock forward. Woops! Terrible second half, and extra time wasn't worth talking about. Got a photo with Judge Jules and had a bit of a chat with him about the Footie, his set at DS and his set at JS. Top bloke. I may not like how he DJs, but he does talk to people.
Headed off to Bay Bar to see Spotlights own Andy Allwood playing some chill and deep house. Great set, he's also ine of their residents. Got a text from G1 saying they were going to JS, and the Driftwood boat party tomorrow. Me and S1 discussed going to JS for about half an hour, then decided against it as we wanted to do ASOT on a clear head... But we decided to do driftwood instead. A PR managed to drag us in to Shades for a drink, and we got chatting to her for a bit.
Met up with Andy at Burger King, then headed in to the West End. Went to funky flares, where Andy is also resident DJ and got some free drinks. :). By this point, I was pretty drunk...
Tried to get back in to ours with Andy, but they wouldn't let him in so went back to his hostal instead. Met with a couple of girls, got baked, then bailed about 6.30 when both myself and S1 were absoulty wrecked. Had a long walk home, then passed out.

Monday, 25th June
So much for a quiet first night. Was determined to do this day a little bit differently. Got up about 3pm, got ready then headed to Subway to get some lunch. Got a text from G1 telling us to be at Itaca at 5pm rather than 5.30 as I thought, so made a dash for it, only to find that they wern't leaving until 6pm. Got a pint in, and settled down listening to the Godkitchen Resident, Sam Mitcham, dropping some beats.
Boarded the boat, after being told we had a special guest playing - Sean Tyas!
Andy Moor was up first as we left the harbour, and played a cracking set. Finally met G1, and chatted to her for a bit. Disappeared off and found Tyas, ended up chatting to him about the state of the scene, the disappearing dance venues in the UK, and lots of other cod**** for about 10 mins. Such a nice guy, I do honestly rank that man. :). Tyas played a very banging set.
Met Andy moor about half an hour later. He came across as such a dick.
Daniel Kandi was on after Tyas, and played an uplifting set, very different to Tyas. Watched a very beautiful sunset from the back of the boat which then headed back for harbour.
Got chatting to G1 and met her two mates, S2 and C1. Both seemed really nice. Agreed to meet with them during ASOT.
Up first was Jochen Miller, he played a fairly tame set compared to how I've seen him before, but he was opening. After that was Markus, who IMO, was on way too early. Markus destroyed it though, and played an astounding set.
Wish I could comment on Armin van Buuren's set, but I don't remember any of it (or to be fair, half or Markus' either), but I know I had a good time. Dash was on after Armin until close, who played a good set as well, which impressed me even more as I don't normally like the kind of music he plays.
Met up with G1 and her crew back in San An, and went back to theres for a few hours for alot of drink. Called it quits about 10am.

Tuesday, 26th June
Woke up feeling pretty blue, but headed out to get breakfast. Bummed around for a bit, then met up with G1 and her crew to watch a terrible sunset, leaving S1 in bed still. Was somewhat cloudy! Spent the rest of the evening with them at Buddha Bar. S1 joined us for a couple of hours, then left and the rest of us headed off to Colors at Es Paradis. The night started off quite busy, but quite obviously full of people who had got the free before 1am wrist band. Lange was on at 2am, Tyas at 3am, MaRLo at 4am and Kandi at 5am.
Lange was pretty ****ed when he came on for his set, but what a set. He dropepd a remix of Binary Finary - 1998 I'd never heard before. Beautiful track. [Turns out if was the Rodrigo Deem remix after looking for it]
Tyas was utterly gone when he came on, including ****ing up a mix (pressed the cue button on the wrong CDJ ). MaRLo came on after, and took it up another notch. By far the best set of the holiday. MaRLo has been on fire with his productions lately as well. Highly recommend him!
By this point, it was just the true lovers of the music left. We bailed when Kandi came on.
Went back to G1s with her crew for a few more hours. Got chatting to them about Cream, and something strange happened... I got to watch first hand G1 talking herself into staying out for Cream (they were flying back on the 27th June) and then talking C1 and S2 into staying as well. They rebooked their flights and hotel before I left. Left theirs about 10.30am and went for some sleep!

Wednesday, 27th June
Woke up about 5pm, then headed out for some breakfast, then bummed around San Antonio again. Went back to Buddha Bar and had a few drinks with G1 and her crew, then went off to grab some dinner. Joined them at Tropi in the west end.
€4 for pints of vodka redbull destroyed me. Gave Wednesday23 a call, and we met up for a couple of hours, at Tropi first, then went to the Boozer where she worked. Really nice girl, it must be said :)
Rejoined our crew about 2.30am after S1 had just left. Chilled with G1 and co at Tropi, then headed to the Highlander and met with Andy for a few shots.
From there, went down to the beach, got baked and chilled for the rest of the morning. So much for another quiet night...
Left the beach about 8.30am.

Thursday, 28th June
Woke up in the morning feeling sick, and instantly knew I'd ruined Cream. Went to KFC and had a burger, which was...edible, if nothing else. Got a couple of posters for Cream, ASOT and Colors from Solo Records, and got our Cream tickets from their too.
Met with C1 and S2 for the sunset at Buddha Bar, which was again cloudy.
Went off to La Cantina for some food, which was ok.
Caught the Amnesia bus up to Cream. Sander was on first in the Main Room, and played an incredible set. Above & Beyond were on after, but their start was crap. Took all the energy out of the room that Sander had built. By about 3.30 I was struggling, four heavy nights on the trot had broken me.
Myself and S1 decided at 4.30 to call it quits and head off, as we'd both had it. :( Just as John O Callaghan was coming on too!

Friday, 29th June
Woke up as late we could on Friday, 15 minutes for check out.
Went for some Breakfast, then went to Linekars because it was somewhere cool with Wifi. Met up with C1 for a few hours, then caught the bus back to the airport. Our flight was delayed by an hour, so me and S1 settled down for some sleep, then caught the flight back.

Conclusion
Even with the disaster with not making the end of Cream (yeah I know, first world problems), thanks to Andy, Wednesday, G1, S2 and C1, this was the best holiday I've had yet in Ibiza. Am out again in September, and both S2 and G1 are out at that time too. So I forsee more carnage. Meeting those guys really made the holiday for me.

Full-on party trip by all reckoning & sounds like you've found some good mates there 8). Did Andy get you properly trashed :p:lol: ? Is he still resident of Bay Bar after getting "Hally & (other) Ben'd":lol::lol::lol: ?

Andy sounds like a legend!!!
so c'mon ben you telling us u didnt try it on with any of these members of the alphabet or whatever their names were???:):)

Sander was on first in the Main Room, and played an incredible set.

The man never ever disappoints. He's changed his style a lot since the first time I saw him, but he always absolutely smashes it. Probably still my favourite DJ to see live.

What was your assessment of Colors by the way, mate? Is it worth us treking across to San An on our second night for?

Sounds like a decent trip mate! :D

What is the hostel Montana like? Got mates staying there in August but not heard a lot about it.

nice review thanks for posting....was ASOT busy??

I wouldn't call it quiet. It was quite busy, but there was alot of space to move at the back and sides. Pretty packed on the main stage though. Had a good atmosphere, but it just wasn't a scratch on Cream.
But what they've done with Privilege... wow! Great set up.

I did, those guys were awesome. Andy got me properly trashed. He's a bad influence! Look forward to seeing him again in September

S1, C1 and S2 were all guys, so no. Didn't want to go after G1. Rather not make things awkward, as I'd love an opportunity to play for their night in Sheffield (infact, it's one of my favourite nights in the north, and one of the most underrated) ;)

Colors is most definitely worth it. Didn't cost us anything to get in either, which was an added bonus. Started off a bit slow, but when Lange came on at 2am, it was just proper Trance from that point on. None of that Dash Berlin crap either
Lange, Tyas and MaRLo were outstanding.
First time I saw SvD was in Cream in '09, and he's never disapointed me either. He's far more electro now, but I have no problem with this :)

Sounds like a decent trip mate! :D

It's...basic. Beds were very uncomfortable (my mattress hadn't been replaced for a good few years, by the feel of it), and the fridge was crap. Couldn't keep anything cool. No aircon either. Fine for a base of operations, but that's literally it.

fair play , out of interest why the abbreviations?? they sound like witnesses in a court case that cant be named or something :)

Something I did in last years review to, in-case people didn't want to be named and shamed

Great review. I too agree that I have never heard a bad set from SVD. Seen him live about 5/6 times in the last 2 years. Always puts on a great set. Although I preferred his earlier stuff, he is still on my top 3.

I'd rather not risk it with the promoters.

S1 on the other hand is my flatmate, Sean

Agree 100%.

Not everyone will be a fan of the way his productions have gone (although I liked some of the tracks on Eleven equally as much as Supernaturalistic) and his Identity show is almost all house music now.

But as a DJ he's crossed genre boundaries so seamlessly and he's testament to the fact that there is something fundamental in DJing that goes beyond the individual 'style' of the tracks chosen. He's had me waxing lyrical about him everytime I've seen him.

Good news. I like Es Paradis as a club you see and I think most of our group have never been before. And the line ups are amazing so seems mad to me not to go over nice and early and have a cheap and cheerful one in San An. I just dread it being dead.

With it being at Es Paradis and there will be no doubt opportunities for discounted / free entry I can imagine it'll fill quite well with West End goers wanting somewhere to go as well as the Trance crowd that'll be heading there anyway.

I just wonder how well it will do if & when Gatecrasher make some announcements as to their events which are to be Tuesdays at Priv.

It was dead beyond 4am. But the DJ isn't in the normal crows nest above the sunken dance floor, but on one of the plinths around the outside of it, so you tend to congregate and dance there instead. Makes the place look alot busier than it is thankfully, and so long as you don't turn around to look at the sunken dance floor, maintains a better atmosphere.

Privilege agreeing to Gatecrasher would be practically suicidal right now. The crowd that Gatecrasher is aimed at will all have been to ASOT the night before and will be looking for alternatives to Privilege for the night. And are they going to top Colors' line up? Probably not.

Interesting that Colors emptied after 4am. Suppose that's what happens when you let people in free. It's easier for people to say, 'My attention span is ****, I'm not sure who this Danny Candy bloke is, so where next?'

While the stage area was busy (must of been about 100 or so people), the rest of the club was a ghost town. Glad they haven't opened room two!

Did GC actually confirm they were going to Ibiza?

I've seen Privilege flyers with GC on for Tuesdays.
